This is an important local east-west route in the Lake District. Although it is only suitable for a limited range of vehicles, its poor state of maintenance is scandalous. The alternative routes east-west routes are far longer and very inconvenient for local residents. Soon it will only be passable by fully tracked vehicles. All these videos are enjoyable to watch. The notoriety of this road as a ‘challenge’ is creating a problem. If this road was fully repaired and maintained by the council it would reduce the attraction of the route to thrill seekers. I love this route, but it has become too risky for me to use.

I thought I was the only one who self soothed and gave myself pep talks that I was going to be alright...It is lovely to know I am not the only one...my grandmother used to say that if you can walk yourself through a scary time, that you know you can depend and trust yourself. Never knew how important that would later become in my life. Beautiful location....

I half dropped my bike on Hardknott, gave way to some cars and the front wheel slipped on some gravel right on that steep bend where you was coming down the hill at the end, I damaged my pannier on that big chunky rock/wall but managed to not fully drop it. My own fault, I didn't get on the back brake quick enough and I didn't spot the loose gravel under my front tyre. Winter is probably a good idea, in summer it is full of cars and campers!! 😂

Conquered your fears Saffy, I felt for you, well done. The more you do this the more relaxed you get on the bike and the easier it gets, but definately a good idea to do these difficult roads in the dry, warmer months. Steep and tight is one thing, ice on the road is another, and if you do go riding with others, don t ever let them push you beyond your limits. Cheers and enjoy.

It's not the only road that's falling into major disrepair in the lakes. Huge number of roads here are being worked on but they are just not keeping up. Maybe lack of manpower or funds. But really inconvenient for locals as much of the work is done with full road closures overnight and sometimes taking weeks to complete. They talk at the moment of the over tourism in the canaries but having just returned from Tenerife it is pale by comparison to that in the national park. Perhaps an entry fee could reduce the numbers and fund the road repairs.

Seems like you did really well to me. I've only done it in good weather I think. I've done other passes up there in cloud/fog and rain and it is super sketchy, so fair play for taking your time and getting through it. If I had any advice, it would be to keep the revs up. Bikes prefer higher revs than cars, as a rule (motorway cruising notwithinstanding) so keep the gear low, the revs up, slip the clutch when you need to, and it does get easier. A lot of low-speed dropsies are from stalls, in my experience.

The notoriety was largely achieved before the "modern era", back when car clutches used to burn out and some cars didn't have the pep to reach the top, loaded down with families and luggage. I remember my father turning around in his Austin A35 half-way up when he caught sight of the steep part. His next car, a VW 1300 Beetle sailed up it with no problems.

Been up and down those passes for years, first on my 125 and every bike since. Target fixation is a major problem I've seen following other bikers along there, they can't stop looking at where they don't want to go and end up going exactly where they don't want to (especially going down the hairpins). Helped one poor lad turn is bike around once as he thought it was impossible. Well done for doing it on your own and staying rubber side down.

it's only dangerous because the council up there are useless, I slid out on asphalt around a left bend, cars were sliding on this stuff going up the hill, the attending officer said to me, that less than 24 hours earlier, another motorcyclist went off in the exact same place as me, council hadn't cleaned it up, copper gave me all the details, the council then paid all damages to the bike, clothing and myself for time off work. Nice vid Saffy

@@spikeccx this is the problem - people don't get that the runoff goes down the road surgafe and takes a lot of gravel with it. "Hardknott Pass is very difficult: hence the name!" - It may surprise you that it was named Hardknott long before any car or motorcycle attempted to cross it. It's named Hardknott Pass because it crosses Hardknott Fell, and that fell's name derives from the Old Norse "Harthr Knutr" which means 'Hard and craggy hill!" which refers to the geology of the area, and has nothing whatsoever to do with how difficult it is to ride over! (The neighbouring pass to Hardknott on the other side of the Duddon Valley is called "Wrynose Pass", and despite what anyone might tell you, you won't come across any Rhinoceroses whilst crossing it! 😉)

Well done Saffy, much kudos on that run. Did it in summer and Autumn with sun and then rain and that was bad enough. Your sheer excitement and love for what you are doing is worth every watch. I see you are up my neck of the woods on your insta so looking fwd to those vlogs. Keep it real gal 👍😎🏍🏴

Worst is going downhill! Just went down a very sharp hill for the first time on a bike, so much worse than in a car (which can be scary). P.s Just dont add wet or frost to the mix.

@@SaffySprocket I know just how you felt as my Gps took me down one in the Surrey hills. On my 125 thank God the brakes were good. It had bends also. You start braking and then think err am not slowing down enough... One of the scariest things ever! Esp when got me by surprise!
