Another thing about the Grand Palace ticket is by buying a ticket you also can use that ticket to watch Khon drama at a nearby theater. It's a very traditional form of Thai theater and its really beautiful, and theres a free trolley service that takes you from the Palace to the theater.

Part of my time will also be in Chiang Mai and Koh Samui. Clearly i need to add another 2 months to my 15 days, but dang....im excited to be heading back!. Once again, thanks for the helpful video.

Excellent travel guide! When you talk about the excursions...did you go for a day or several days and keep your accommodation in Bangkok at the same time?
@juanmarcelandrhylan
@juanmarcelandrhylan Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much 😍 and we kept our accommodation in Bangkok at the same time when we took our Day / Weekend trips. Because, we had to book airbnb's for 30+ days in Bangkok anyways, and also the accommodation in the other destinations was so affordable that it didn't feel like too much of a waste of money to have both.

Traditional Thai costumes seen at Wat Arun are hi-so and usually worn by wives of high officials at former occasions such as Royal Ballroom celebration at Government House or at Official New Year's morning merit making presided by Thai prime minister/wife as well as cabinet ministers/wives. Woman also wears traditional Thai dress during wedding ceremony while Thai man usually wears western suit or white formal uniform if being civil servant. Legend states that when King Taksin, at the time Ayutthaya mandarin, led some troops to break the Burmese siege of Ayutthaya and arrived at this old temple at dawn, so the temple was then named Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun). After Ayutthaya fell after one-year siege, he led troops from Chanthaburi province to expel the occupied Burmese troops in Ayutthaya. Then he proclaimed himself King and moved the capital from Ayutthaya to Thonburi and built a royal palace adjacent to Wat Arun and this temple then became the Royal Temple within the Palace domain in line with Ayutthaya tradition. The same could be said about King Rama I when he moved the capital from Thonburi across the Chao Phraya River and built Emerald Buddha Temple within the Grand Palace. When Thonburi was still a distinct province before it was dissolved to form Bangkok metropolis about 50 years ago, Thonburi's symbol was Phra Prang (Stupa) of this temple. Phra Prang is lit at night and can be seen from tour boats or roof-top bars on the opposite side of Chao Phraya River.

Chiang Mai was the capital of the Lanna Kingdom for at least 700 years. Some time the city was independent, but most of the time the City was a vassal state of various Burmese dynasties even right through the reign of King Rama I. When the British began to subjugate Burma and eventually abolished the Burmese King, exiling him to British India during King Rama IV reign, Chiang Mai was independent again but within a few decades, Chiang Mai King saw that Siam was beginning to exert influence to the North, the King decided to submit and even sent his daughter to become King Rama V's concubine. When Chiang Mai king died, King Rama V decided not to appoint a new king but put Chiang Mai directly under Bangkok's rule, sending a governor to govern Chiang Mai since then. Chiang Mai has it all, old town with several important temples, Wat Prathat Doi Suthep on 13 km up hill within 20 km from the city center and at the foot of Doi Suthep, there is Chiang Mai University, one of the four regional public universities in Thailand. The others are Khon Kaen in the Northeast, Burapha in the East (Chonburi) and Songkhla in the South. All four regional universities have all traditional faculties including Medicine and Engineering. There is an going project to propose Chiang Mai's old town as Unesco World Heritage within this decade.

Wat Pho is an old temple south of the Grand Palace. It is also known also as the Temple of the Reclining Buddha built by King Rama III in 1832. The King also decreed that traditional Thai massage and traditional medicine be inscribed on stone tablets to deseminate the knowledge to the general public. The famous Thai spa and massage are believed to originate from such stone inscription. King Rama III was also known as Merchant Prince because when he was still a prince he conducted trade with China and asked the ship captain to bring back stone sculptures such as Chinese deities, mythical beasts as stabilizing balance in the ship's belly. These stone sculptures are now commonly seen at Wat Pho, Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. When President Obama had only one day to tour a Thai temple, US Embassy recommended this temple due to its unique architecture, history and beautiful reclining Buddha.

Awesome tips. I've been to Bangkok twice and stayed literally walking distance to the Grand Palace on both occasions. I've went on the Sky Walk at the King Power Mahanakhan Building and also went to top of Baiyoke Tower as well. Also did the day trip to Ayutthaya which was great. Went to Lumphini Park for a relaxing walk. Yes I went to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun. Also did the Chao Praya River Cruise during the day and at night, Worth visiting the Asiatique Riverfront. ICON Siam was being built at the time I went on my second visit there. Chinatown was also pretty good too but I didn't like Khaosan Road that much and I've avoided the floating market.

Thailand started bus service in Bangkok nearly 100 years ago, it was run by private bus operators at a reasonable price but still making a decent profit. However, about 45 years ago, a certain political party campaigned to make bus in Bangkok free and when this party came to power as a coalition govt, it nationalized bus services, buying the private operators and created Bangkok Mass Transport Authority (BMTA) to run a free bus service for a few years. When the govt could no longer afford the huge annual subsidy, it allowed the BMTA to charge a cheap ticket price for non-aircon buses and then introduced air-con buses at 2-3 times the price of non-aircon buses. The non-aircon buses have been running at a loss since then up to today while the air-con buses run at break-even. The BMTA then granted private bus operators to run non-aircon and air-con buses again about 30 years ago to reduce the BMTA's mounting debts as private operators seem to know how to run buses at a decent profit even though they charge the same ticket fares as BMTA's own buses. To this day, BMTA non-aircon red buses are still relatively cheap less than 10 baht, one of the cheapest fare in the world. Every year, the national govt allocates a supplementary budget to shore up BMTA's inefficient operation. It is apparent that the first populist policy of Thai govt does not work as is the case worldwide such as the bankrupted Venezuela and father of populist policy Argentina which seeks IMF help at least 6 times since WWII.

The Memorial Bridge was the first bridge across Chao Phraya River built nearly 100 years ago. It was a steel bridge whose middle span could be raised to allow Navy ship to sail towards the former Navy headquarters at King Taksin's Palace near Wat Arun. Later the Navy built a big pier at the mouth of Chao Phraya River and there was no need for the navy ship to come to the headquarter anymore, thus this bridge's middle spans were no longer raised for the last 40 years. I should know because I studied at Suan Kularb school at the foot of the bridge from 1965-69 and saw the bridge raised a few times. The school is the oldest government school in Thailand built during King Rama V reign. Its 2-storey yellow building was/is the longest 2-storey building in Thailand. Since then a parallel bridge with 6 lanes was built and a few decades ago. Then a few years ago the skywalk garden was built in the middle of this new bridge at the former abandoned railway track. It is the great place to relax, watching sun set while drinking a Thai beer. Meanwhile, you can also visit the Flower Market, just opposite Suan Kularb School. Around 9 pm till early in the morning, all types of flowers were trucked in, sorted and arranged to be sold either retail or wholesale. The Flower Market never dies, the business is run 24 hours/7 days per week.
