This plant grew on me! It was failing for so long but never dying. Mine had that starter plug fabric cup on the roots. Once I cut it off and freed the roots it grew like crazy. Mine was from a big box store. If nothing seems to work check the roots! Great tips. Thank you.

Sheffield Made Plants suggests treating your water with aquarium water treatment (buffer) to prevent leaf crisping. I've tried it and it does work. My plants that tended to have this issue are now producing perfect leaves. So y'all might want to give that a try. I got mine on Amazon and you only need a few drops per pint.

WAOW Thanks so much! Honestly, I've got a lot of exotic plants and it's not behaving the same as most. I've always ended up killing these Begonias over time or stunning their growth by fear of root rot (it's real but as long as it drains well, the plant spits out whatever it doesn't need). Definitely a game changer NOT to let them dry in between waterings.

I feel like this plant is just perfect for me because I can't stop fussing about it lol I am constantly misting and checking moisture for them. It's always grown beautifully and QUICK for me. Thick and lush with many stems in one pot. Also I LOVE how it sprouts roots along the stems in water. I struggle with plants that need a more "hands off" approach

I saw one with 4 leaves and the tiniest pot and then saw the price. 8$ for a 4 leaf plant but the money just flew out of my wallet. Later I saw what I thought was going to be a flower but it unfurled into a new leaf. Stunning plant that started my Begonia fascination. Dragon wing in the garden. A red and black Rex in the house and a few more common types around the yard.

I've thanked you before for explaining so much information about each of the plants' root system you do videos on, but seriously!! it's soooo helpful! when you mentioned humidity probably not being the issue, immediately I was like "hmmmmm. with fine roots, it sounds like they're more likely suffocating the root system with dense soil and frequent watering than the humidity affecting the foliage." That was 100% the case with a few of my calatheas and your videos absolutely helped me with that 'aha!' moment :)
@EPalsson21 күн бұрын
Thanks for a great video! I have a very large Begonia Maculata that I have never staked up. I've pruned it / taken cuttings many times, and perhaps that gives the stems time to become sturdy enough to support all the growth. In the summer I put this plant outside, but in shade. (Indoors, it likes a sunny spot.) It's not that the sun is strong here (Sweden) but it does get MANY hours of daylight then.

I agree with the underwatering = crispy leaves. I live in a tropical country and the average humidity in my house is 75% and around 85F temperatures. When I forget to water the begonia I get crispy leaves and she's still in high temps and high humidity. It's kind of tricky getting right the amount of water she needs. Also I agree with more light! My first one declined quite quickly because I kept her indoors and with relative medium/low light. Recently I got a new one and I have her in my east facing balcony and it's getting a ton of morning sun, it's growing and doing so much better than the first time around.

Just had a leaf fall off that had no indication of a problem. No browning, yellowing etc. Have been trying for a year to grow one of these polka dot gems but several have died. First thought it was the lack of humidity in the air and now have a small humidity tent that I keep them in. Now they don't seem to need watering as much as I check the level with a moisture meter and it seems to be right in the middle, not dry and not drenched. I just got one of these and it is sad looking, I'm happy that it shouldn't be sad looking for too long! If i get crispy i know it's my water bc i have hard water. I think humidity is the issue when it's a humidity swing, example, buying from a greenhouse that feels like you're going into a wall of water as you enter then bringing it home to normal humidity and there seems to be a harder transition for any plant IME. When I've ordered online or bought from a grocery store the plant usually never looks as sad again after a few days of my light and temperatures etc. Even though i don't have good windows i have the right amount of lamps i guess!

We have two Begonias, one exactly like in your video. Nowhere as big as yours, however, it does have one leaf that is crispy. The rest of the plant itself is blooming like a crazy. I have been keeping a much closer eye on it's watering schedule and I do notice it doesn't like being under watered. So, with that being said, I would be led to believe that is why ours has a not so good looking leaf. What I did find informative and wasn't sure about was the lighting. With a lot of plants with thinner leaves they are more prone to leaf burn/crispy leaves per say. We have one underneath our coffee table and it receives indirect light and more of the afternoon/late evening sun. The other Begonia is in our bathroom above our tub on a rack and our bathroom has a skylight. That plant loves it there. It did get a bit top heavy because that particular Begonia has rather large reddish leaves and we repotted it. Has done amazingly well too. Haven't propagated these plants as of yet, but will definitely be doing this in the very near future and selling to other like minded people who love plants. Great video, very imformative, and keep the great content coming.

I'm using a bottom feeding planter. And my plant really started to flourish. I got them from Amazon they have clear bottoms where you pour the water with strings that hang into the water so it can drink. I used those bottom feeder planters on mostly all of my plants. The are like 20 for 5 hard plastic pots. I would highly recommend them because I also have hanging plants in them and the most weight is from the water in the pot rather than heavy ceramic pots. I also like that you can see the roots in the clear bottom part of the pot. So I can tell if my plant needs to be repotted if the roots have grown alot through the holes in the top part to the bottom part where the water goes

Thank you for the Indepth information, I have been so worried about my begonia. It is really huge, really approximately 3 times the size of your mother plant. The leaves are nice and crispy with no brown tips however, I am noticing more space between some of the leaves on some of the branches. I need to propagate it but because it is so huge (tall), I am wondering if I cut off a large portion of the plant, will I kill it. It is nearly touching the ceiling and the original stems that are actually in the soil have no leaves but many, many shoots. The plant has been in our family for over 40 years (a piece was gifted to me) so, I do not want to lose it. It has both a southern and western exposure. I've noticed that I do not get the beautiful pink flowers anymore. Any advice on what I should do with this precious plant? Thanks you.
@AlohaPlantLife Жыл бұрын
You can definitely cut it back, I just wouldn't cut back more than a 1/3 of the plant to start with. Once you cut it back often times new leaves will start to develop further down the stem. Mine actually just started pushing two new branches out from the base after I cut it back about a 1/3 of the way.

Drea I need help! I've watched a bunch of videos and can't find any help for my begonia maculata problem. A couple of days ago I noticed a browning/yellowing patch AT THE CENTRE of the leaf, by the stem (nothing on the tips). It didn't look dry at all but it made the leaf see-through and vain-y, especially against the light. Yesterday the centre of the patch dried out and is now fully brown, front and back. Then I noticed the same starting on another leaf so I panicked and cut them both off. The soil was only houseplant soil so wasn't draining well, so I repotted to add perlite in case of overwatering but I'm worried that it's progressing fast :( It sits on a windowsill in the living room and gets bright indirect light half the day. Hopefully you have an idea and can help (shame we can't post photos). Thanks for all the great info on everything else :)

So my grandson threw a ball and the pot tipped over and it totally chopped off the top of my plant. I put the top part that got chopped off as it hit the ground in water and it started rooting. Even tgiugh it was chopped on accident. Lol I've actually shared my propagated piece. And now the original plant which was given to me from a friend from her propagated plant is now 4 ft tall. Leaves grew from chopped top part. But it's kind of weird because the 4 ft plant has about 3 to 4 inches apart from each wing. But the 2 plants growing from each side of the tall one has leaves/wings close to eachother on the stem. So I don't know why that is happening. But you've given me lots of great information. So I will continue to share the love now that I know how to properly propate these angel wings. I've also used plant sticks to prop up the stems closer to the main stem so they don't hang over. So that may help some people who have a plant that is toppling over. I also think that direct East light has burnt a few of my leaves. Because they looked like they were burnt compared to the ones that were light colored and dry when I wasn't watering it properly. So I just pulled those leaves off so the rest of the plant can get the energy. Thanks for all the great information you answered alot of my questions & the information was thought provoking.

Is a leaf or two with a hole or split a problem? Should I cut them off? Loads of new leaves are growing all over the plant. It's doubled in size in 3-4 months. I did repot it a few says after we got it home as it was dry and the pot it was in didn't have much soil in it. It turned out to be root bound too. I have it near an East facing window, in a self watering pot. I check the soil for dampness every 5-7 days and fill the ressevour as needed. A few of the original leaves have brown tips and edges, this isn't going way, but there aren't any new ones. One stem sna[[ed of so I set it in water and roots grew, I left it for 2-3 weeks and when there was a good bunch of roots I potted it uo into a 4" pot with cocoa fiber and watered it when the top started to dry. Seemed fine, but didn't survive. Any suggestions, before I try it again, on purpose?

Holes and splits are nothing to worry about. I just use 4 parts premium potting soil and 1 part perlite after rooting my propagations in water and I water them when the soil has dried about 1/4-1/3 of the way out and they’ve all done fine for me. Hope this helps💚

What am I doing wrong if the leaves are getting brown/crispy spots whilst it is still propagating in water? It’s not getting direct light at all. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

How long has it been in water and does it have any roots yet?

My begonia is very leggy. It is 1 long 6ft stem. Can I clip some off the very top to see how that goes and if it works can I clip a little further down? I’m wanting it to be more bushy. Can I plant the new babies in the same pot as the mother plant?
@AlohaPlantLife Жыл бұрын
Yes, yes, and yes. It probably wants a little more light too than you’re currently giving it if it’s not branching on its own.

Do they do ok with grow lights? And if so do they do better on the purple light setting or plain white setting?
@AlohaPlantLife Жыл бұрын
I put my propagations in my IKEA greenhouse cabinet and they’ve done fine with those grow lights which are white.

Have you checked the roots to make sure there wasn’t a fabric plug around the roots?

I just bought my 4th one. Previous 3 died slowly. I have about 70 plants but cannot grow this one. Help me. Fyi. I have grow lights, humidifier and humidity trays. I will say I did not have the previous 3 on a humidity tray.

Check if it has a fabric plug around the roots and carefully cut the fabric off. Most of the ones I’ve currently seen on the market have fabric plugs and they end up killing the plant.

Mine is starting to look really bad 😢 looks leggy and I evhave dead stems 😢I think it’s because I now have a window unit in the window where it sits and my violets are all at this window because it’s the best window but now this window unit may be causing issues with my plants 😢violets still look good but not my begonia, never seen it this bad before and it’s the mother plant 🪴 I haven’t repotted it in years..should I do this?
@AlohaPlantLife Жыл бұрын
I would slip it out of its pot and see if it’s root bound if it is then yes repot it

Can I cut off the brown crispy leaves? If so where should I cut them?
@AlohaPlantLife3 ай бұрын
Yes, just make sure you don’t cut into the healthy tissue, only cut through the brown tissue or else it will spread upward.

First of all I am in love with all of your plant babies!! 💚🪴 I have a begonia that is massive and I need some recommendations. Is there any way I can get a photo of it to you? Also, I was gifted a silver pothos and noticed yours beside your begonia. Can you do a video on that one?

You didn’t really cover blooming and that’s my issue. It used to bloom prolifically and now it doesn’t. Any ideas?

They aren’t particularly prized for their flowers so that’s why I didn’t cover it. Mine has never flowered but a propagation of mine that I gave my friend has flowered once. We care for the plant the exact same way so who knows why her’s chose to flower

I got a begonia maculata cutting as a bonus on a plant purchase and I am TERRIFIED. I love the look of begonia, but they have a reputation for dying and i don't want to go through that heartbreak lmao. I've got a nice spot for it and I'll do my best, but only time will tell.

Have you checked to see if the plant was grown from a plug? I’m finding more and more people are losing these plants because they were grown from fabric encased plugs and that fabric is choking out the roots. If it was grown from a plug then carefully remove as much of the fabric around the roots as possible.
