When I got into survival back in the 1970s read about a guy living in the North West that had a later 60s model station wagon . He had made many mods to make it suitable for a survival vehicle . It had hot water from the radiator pumped into a copper worm in the passenger compartment . Set a pot in the worm and cook dinner while you drove . In the warm season a valve could be used to devert water flow back to radiator . This vehicle captured my imagination . I drove a 1974 Chevy C 10 with six bangger , heavy duty clutch , three speed on the column ( till it wore smack dab out - replaced it a floor stick ). Drove it till c.2000 . Odometer rolled twice . I know , y'all say , "got to have 4 Wheel drive." But I will tell you that I drove that truck through places that one would not believe . Seen other 2 Wheel Drive go in unbelievable places . Mud would get me , I'll admit that , but an economical Come - Along defeats mud . My brother had a 70s something Toyota Land Cruiser, 4-wheeler , and he stuck it in the mud . My point - mud will get anything ! How much are you willing to pay to defeat a given amount of mud ? And how many times are you willing to pay ? 4-wheeler much less service life . '69 Battlewagon , jacked up , skid plates , knarly tires , heavy duty front and rear bumpers with grab hooks , light bars front and rear , sun roof hatch in lew of a Maw Duece Turret , and the mandatory CB Whup Antenna with jolly rogers !!! Man that's what I'm talking about ! 😜

My gripe with these “overland” rigs is that they stick out like a sore thumb. Not the kind of attention you want driving through areas full of desperate and unprepared people. My work truck is a late model white GM pickup w/utility cap. 2” lift, 33” ATs, factory rear locker. Can carry all the gear strapped to the outside of your rig, but hidden away in the side tool boxes. Slap a generic “utility company” magnet logo on the side and the truck blends in and looks like it belongs anywhere.

Review Hurricane Helene driving conditions. Mud everywhere and you didn't know where you will get safe water or where you purchase gas. Trees down everywhere and turned off power lines hanging very low. Every an all wheel drive is better than front wheel drive.

Unpopular opinion: if you are not in a very remote place consider something more stock. In times of crisis fuel economy is huge and additionally mods can put a lot more longterm stress on critical components. Greyman concept as a car.

You discussed many vehicles and completely ignored Jeeps?!?!? 4x4 with rear AND front lockers and disconnectable swaybar and solid front axles and a factory Warn winch option. Literally the most capable vehicle you can buy off the lot with the biggest aftermarket there is, bar none. All of that available in both SUV (Wrangler) and pickup (Gladiator) formats. Needless to say, I'm not impressed. At all.
@DavidLeffel-j6k13 күн бұрын
@@VideosOffRoad I bought a 2020 Gladiator with all you mentioned with the manual trans (solid axles manual trans v6 ) man what could be better. WHAT A PILE OF💩. Traded that poo pile in last year for Colorado Zr2 ( 10X the better truck)
@VideosOffRoad13 күн бұрын
@DavidLeffel-j6k Interesting. My 10 year old Wrangler Rubicon (with all I mentioned except factory winch was not an option in 2014, so I put one on myself) is still going strong at 158K miles). And it will go darn near anywhere. I put a small lift on it and 35s, which today you can also get from the factory. Why did you think your Gladiator was bad? What about it wouldn't work as a bug out vehicle?
@DavidLeffel-j6k13 күн бұрын
@VideosOffRoad 5 recalls in 3yrs, worst mpg of any vehicle I have ever owned (and I've owned more than I can count ) most gutless v6 ever. Mine had a dealer installed 3" lift with 35" also, with tow pkg. (Dana 44 axles, 4:10 gear swap and big break kit) I added the steel off-road bumpers whinch and lights myself. Built for overland adventures..haha It wouldn't go through sand in 4hi you had to use 4lo with the 35"s and the 4:10s was supposed to solve that (NO) and never got better than 14.7mpg. And only on perfect flat road with No head wind at all could I use 6th gear and keep speed. Had nothing but electrical issues. Ignition, radio, that stupid push button start and the stop start tech.. garbage...and the last recall did it. Which I don't think there is still a fix. Clutch / Pressure plate issue. The main reason I wanted it (only truck sold with manual trans and solid axles any more ) junk or a lemon idk.. Now I've had this Zr2 now for 16 months added winch, lights, camper and gone all the same places just as easy with not one issues, not one recall and averaging almost 20mpg doing so. Now this isn't my bug out vehicle either. Hell no
@VideosOffRoad12 күн бұрын
@DavidLeffel-j6k Interesting. My Wrangler is also my bug out vehicle. It gets about 17 mpg on the hwy (only has a 5 speed auto, worst thing about it, could push 20 with more gears I think) but I had a 2nd gas tank added, giving me 675ish miles of paved road range. Again, it goes anywhere. There was an airbag recall but that's the only one I remember. The JK is NOT anywhere NEAR as complicated as the successor JLs and JTs but is still more complicated than I would like. Has had minor issues (stupid oil cooler housing is now an aluminum one) and of course consumables and wear and tear items, but overall has been pretty good. Regardless, it's still an option the presenter didn't even *mention* and that makes me very unimpressed with this channel, which was my main point.
@DavidLeffel-j6k12 күн бұрын
@@VideosOffRoad I agree and think the older jeeps would definitely been worth mentioning. Anything with electronic I would never consider. I believe a bug out vehicle you should be able to swap out parts or get things fixed with in minutes not hours. Hence why mine is a 1975 GMC sit on a 83' M1008 CUCV frame and drive train minus the 6.2 diesel. It runs the good old 350ci, no electronic keep it simple with all the necessary for a weekend wheeling in no mans land. And it's painted CAMO. Unless it's a major internal part (cam, timing chain, axle bearing exc, ) there's nothing that can't be swapped or replaced in 30min and your back on the trail.
