What I dislike about the stupid CalArts style criticism is that most of the time the shows people complain about have nothing to do with CalArts. Like... Rebecca Sugar didn’t go to CalArts. Gumball is made in Europe. I’ve seen people call the She-Ra reboot “CalArts” and was confused cause it didn’t fit the “style” most people complain about. The “CalArts Style” is just a buzzword. Literally just “thing I don’t like” from people who see studios and creators use similar popular styles and think there’s some conspiracy about how the industry has been “usurped” or some dumb shit like that. It stopped being about the character designs being too similar and became about whether the shows had things the people critical of them didn’t like or where offended by.

@@GNAAAAAARRPP It's literally not, but characters not looking like anime or some early 2000s action cartoon automatically means it's CalArts. I've also seen these people stretch the definition so far as to include Netflix's Castlevania in there. Now, that show is VERY much not ''CalArts'', but considering the types I've dealt with on social media claimed it was because Alucard was bi and there were lesbians in the third season, I realized the term stopped being just about art styles and more about literally ANYTHING these people dislike.

This video is amazing. I've always found the "Calarts Style" thing to be asinine at best and destructive at worst. It's frankly a pointless discussion driven by a refusal to examine old popular cartoons as critically as modern shows and an ignorance to the nature of trends. Cartoons have ALWAYS followed certain artistic trends (anime, 80s toy-driven shows, the UPA/HB-inspired shows of the late 90s/early 2000s), and TBH, it's totally harmless. Also, Sailboat Stoat's little rant/speech at 37:10-39:20 speaks to me on a level I really can't explain. It's just all so true, and so many cartoon fans need to hear it. I do genuinely feel that a lot of people in the cartoon community match her description as bitter, jaded, cynical misanthropes clinging to nostalgic childhood memories and otherwise dismissing all kids' cartoons that aren't part of it as mediocre garbage. They're honestly the exact kind of people who to me really shouldn't be watching silly lighthearted kids shows and should move on to stuff like Breaking Bad or The Sopranos. They're people who IMO are too old for kids' cartoons in the true sense of the term - mentally, not physically.

This video is so important. As someone working in the industry this really means a lot discussing this. It's really sad when the general consumer just utilizes "Cal Arts" as such an insult and end all be all term for " Thing bad" in animation. The blatant harassment that some industry collogues have gotten or the sadness some folks have felt because people jump the gun and call the show lazy and people don't know what they're doing, etc. It's okay to have conversation but going so far as to threaten people, harass the students at the school etc... It's too much, it's really sad. Stoat and Delhi you guys had a really great nuanced conversation and I hope more people see this and learn. The industry is always changing, trends are always fluid and that's okay.

One thing this video taught me is that the majority of the “cal arts” complainers are not true animation fans. This is such a massively important video and I really appreciate you (and Stoat) taking all this time and energy to make it. Ironically, in some ways, animation discussion has taken on the increasingly reductive levels of iteration that those who discuss animation argue the series themselves have. This 'argument' is perhaps the most logical and expected conclusion of that process. (Well, until someone finds the _next_ lowest common denominator to define a decade of discourse!) Appreciation for something is only successful and proper when you're willing to dive in and take a look at its intricacies and come to a respectful, nuanced, logically sound conclusion or discussion point. I for one will continue to strive to learn more about what I love and try more new things with an open and fair mindset -- and yes, in the process, try and get more people to learn to read!

In my opinion, the cal arts stlye only looks good if it fits the show, It's hard for me to imagine what Clarence, adventure time or Regular would look like if they didn't have the "Cal-Arts" Style, but other shows, it just looks super generic. Also, i dunno, i always hated when people's counterargument is "Most people didn't go to cal-arts" so what? That doesn't really change anything other than making the term "incorrect". Or how they would say stuff like "older generations had style trends too" which was true up until the late 80s and 90s, where styles had A LOT of variety based on what the show was about. The whole CalArts stuff just seems dumb in my opinion, like i dunno why disliking a bad style has to be this controversial XD. Anyways good video!

Honestly I couldn’t have said it better myself. I discovered this video a couple weeks ago but I absolutely love how level-headed and unbiased you are discussing this topic. Honestly after thinking about it as much as people have their preference for what art style they want in a cartoon it does no one any favors bickering and arguing with each other or tearing each other down over a different art style. The fact we have people who have gone so far as to spread rumors about different creators or even straight up arguing with them on social media is absolutely sad. The unfortunate is that we have people in the cartoon community who are definitely very bent on wanting to go at each other’s throats for whatever nonsense or are overly emotional for whatever reason.

When it comes to grading CalArts animations, I describe adequate works as "CalArts Style", while subpar ones go by simply "CalArts". These two groups are followed by next categories: "Pencil Tension" and "Asset Tension". - In Pencil Tension, it important to masterfully telegraph a strain/stress put on character's shape in motion, regardless of intensity. Many of today's CN character exaggerations lack such property, making the motion look akin to toying with Ellipse Tool in MS Paint; = Second is "Asset Tension". Lion-O from ThunderCats Roar trailer gives off the same uncanny vibe that was described above: a stack of stiff, smooth and glossy shapes moving together at same pace in a straight line makes me see a blob of colorful bubblegum, of all things. Compare this to another case of obvious asset manipulation - Wilt (Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends). While viewers spectate the simple bending and stretching of basic shapes on screen, some of Wilt's gestures feel way too natural due to a very subtle acceleration/deceleration of every element Wilt is composed of. This concept was later explored in The Amazing World of Gumball.

In my humble opinion, the art style in question is one that has been streamlined exactly for corporate promotion of TV series. Much like what we saw in the 80’s with the simplistic animation for a lot of TV series promoting toy products, we have much the same reoccurring once again. Now, that does not mean the art style is, itself, bad. Rather, the issue is how commonplace it has become as a means to expedite the production process. It becomes such a common trait that it results in those corporate entities not taking risks on other, radically different art styles in favor of a template art style that can easily be saved in the cloud and easily reutilized again when need be. After all, it’s a lot cheaper to just use one very similar art style for several different shows than it is to have one art style for one show. I think that is where the general issue comes about, though I do agree that it is not the only issue with modern programs. Rather, I think the far more pressing issue than generic animation styles is the politicization of cartoons by the show creators themselves in order to push a specific, political agenda rather than being a form of genuine entertainment that distills moral lessons to the audience that can be universally understood.

I used to love the mean-spirited animation fan reviews as a teenager because I just wanted to watch someone explain why something doesn't work, even if they didn't explain it well, and I was a lot more nitpicky then too. I became pretty averse to this way of thinking because I realized it was unproductive and just, very mean. Disliking something is perfectly fine, and being a petty hater can be fun, but being harmful about it ruins the fun in the first place. The way people literally act like these artists burned down villages is crazy. (I can't stand Mr. Enter now, wtf is bro talking about 😭) You're one of the few animation fan KZbinrs who are empathetic to the process but still critical in productive ways! Thundercats Roar is even worst than TTG but look at the bright side, the audience is pretty much correct about their expectation on the show. In my opinion, Thundercats Roar is not just bad because of the terrible character design, but it also because the light and quirky tone doesn't fit the show's darker atmosphere of the 80s cartoon and the 2011 reboot. I'm not much of a fan of Thundercats (despite growing up with the 2011 series) but the fact that the show made a so-called "tribute" of Panthro implied to be disrespectful towards the now deceased voice actor which it somehow alienated the fans with that kind of service. The good thing about Roar is the animation. It's pretty smooth but that doesn't mean the show was saved by the atrocities of the designs and the storytelling wise. Whenever I saw the show on TV, I'll give the "mid finger" to it. Let's be real: Animation isn't dead. That's because the show was bad doesn't mean it's responsible for animation to die off in its demise. There are good animation out there in the West, it's not just getting enough attention.

Part of the problem with people using the Calarts Arguement to criticize modern cartoons is that they adhere to a traditionalist viewpoint that view progress or evolution as an attack on their ideal vewpoints as to what animation should be. The wrestling equivalent of this is when Jim Cornette makes a video complaint on the direction pro wrestling is heading (namely AEW) of which he criticize how modern wrestling today isn’t like the hard hitting and more kayfabe adhering nature of the 80s territories; despite the fact that nowadays every fans/viewers are well aware that the profession is fake and enjoy all the variety that is being presented (the comedy matches, the flippy lucha libre action, the bloody deathmatches, the 20 minute long main events, etc). Its a narrowminded viewpoint to believe the stows can go back to when it used to be. And sometimes we have to acknowledge that taste changes among different generations. There is nothing wrong with looking back in the past and learning from those shows to see what made them so good and how to replicate it for future content; but doing a 1 for 1 translation and expect modern audience will enjoy it is a dumb idea. Why else the 1980s Thing remake is consider the high standards of filmmaking, and the 1990s Psycho remake is utter crap?
@theburgerking1236
@theburgerking1236 4 жыл бұрын
Psycho was a remake? I didn’t know that. I may be thinking of American psycho and have become entirely confused but yes you raise a good point in that fact. Honestly as natural as change is it can be hard to not feel as though it’s a personal attack against you specifically and anyone who disagrees with you is against you. Times do change across the ages and things that we remember enjoying may not be something that would be any good now looked through the modern lens. So when they say things should be like they were back in the day it feels like they haven’t taken a step back to take note of that.

There are elements from the past that can work for just about any time period and some that are dated and in need of an update to work.

@@BigK13372 that raises a good point as frankly in the past a lot of decisions were made purely out of necessity as the tech back in the day limited how ambitious you could be. And in some sense things that were made in the past are time capsules of the era they were made. Some of them could work but it feels like any time something popular in the past is remade they forget what made it popular in the first place, that can work in its favor on the rare occasion. But it likely contributes a decent bit towards this hatred of advancement as people who are familiar with it only see a bastardized zombie.

The term is bad generalization and a misnomer, no one draws things perfectly consistent, there's no perfect way, TV cartoons in the 2010s have different art styles and draw thrust in the character's face inconsistently since there's no perfectly consistent way. This is 4chan's fault for popularizing John K's term into 2010s TV cartoons.

I think the number one thing that made me realize the calarts discussion was going nowhere was when people with anime profile pictures would call it "generic". Too ironic. I do think there's something to be said about the crunching nature of today's media machines though... The rise of more simplistic background, bold and easy to create line work, and use of flash-animated puppets is always a stylistic choice sadly...

While both the anime and cal art style may be over done, the cal arts style is dysgenic in every way. It's a SHAPE based art style that limits the SHAPES you can use to pretty much circles and straight lines. Basically all the corners are cut here. It has no volume to make up for lack of shape variety and no shape variety to make up for lack of volume. Because of this the character designs become too restricted to make any sort of dynamic pose. That's if the story boarders know how to use a line of action. Similar thing happens for the facial expressions with the completely circular eyes and bean shaped mouth. It's an ART style for Animation that defies all rules of ART and ANIMATION.

People seem to think whenever something gets popular every company wants to reproduce it for themselves which is my personal theory as to why the bean head style appears so often lately. It’ll likely pass within the decade. Just as things do. Cal arts style also seems to imply cal arts to be the be all end all of animation in the west and...it really isn’t. A lot of the big names in animation that we have heard about did go to cal arts but again it’s not the be all end all of the industry. And I’ll be honest it’s a very easy way for people to say that something is bad without having to explain their point. It’s a tactic that’s used often and one I’m guilty of myself we all are but this particular one really needs to be put to bed. Just like thunder cats roar. The 2007 reboot ended long before it’s time but anyway I digress and that last point is subjective while I believe it was good I also believe it’s more than a decade too late to revive the show as anyone who did work on it originally...idk why I’m ranting so much. Back to he point, calarts style isn’t very good criticism if you asked me, and has just become memified(tm) into losing any meaning that it once had. (The part about thunder cats roar was a joke, I am indifferent about the show as I frankly didn’t see any of it whatsoever I stopped watching tv a long time ago)

I have no time for someone that blurtgurgitates "cal arts style reeee" But doesn't want to discuss real teachers harassing students for not drawing how they like or things they'd prefer to look at and threaten to hurt their grades if they don't conform their style to the rest of the students whose parents paid for their tuition. I'm not making this up mass art and risd had students whose final projects had a dumptruck of parent money hire voice actors and VFX and buy music for their kids final rpoject thinking "oh this will get us a big recommendation for our kid to work in a big studio". Cal arts was under fire between 08-14 for this style issue cuz half the teacher would yell at students "STOP DRAWING ANIME" meanwhile the canvas had X-Men or atla characters on it 💀 Teachers from massart risd and calarts would regularly tell their students 1) I GAVE UP AN OFFER TO WORK AT DISNEY TO TEACH YOU or 2)ANIME WONT GET YOU ANYWHERE IN THE ART WORLD. They never conceded "hey this looks great but I wanna see you try some new styles" - no college art teacher ever. (Maybe in the last 2 year but definitely not the majority of 2000's and 2010s)

CalArts used to be such a good school. A lot of great artists like Brad Bird, Tim Burton, and others graduated there. But the problem is the teachers there have gotten lazy, and the infamous "CalArts style" is the result.

A while ago, I saw a tweet that says to say something positive challenge about Teen Titans Go! Instead of saying nice the easiest way possible, I took it by 11 by giving a shoutout at 3 crew members who still working on the show that I liked on the top of my head. 2 of them noticed and replied back at me, which was such surprise that I can actually do that, reaching out the many artists of the Animation Industry in a positive way. Give them a good support. twitter.com/Dabathhouse/status/1282801410187431937/retweets/with_comments A few weeks ago, I watched Inside Pixar on Disney with they had a writer that came up with the barber scene and character designer with some great tips for any artists for the upcoming Soul for Christmas. It gave me a good insight of how much work they been working hard on this one. So it's better for anyone to low their expectations a lot when they go see it. The next time you go watch something before judging anything, do some research behind the scenes of how and why it's like this in the final product. Who these group of people worked so hard on tight deadlines while working on their own personal projects. Give them a shoutout, why don't you?

Very good, if not a bit preachy and long-winded. My condition is simple: if the story/comedy isn't good enough to activate the suspension of disbelief because the animation style is too distracting, then it is a fail with either a weak story/comedy, an overly-distracting animation style, or both.

I never liked John K's style. Not even cause of the molesting thing. But Calarts sucks too. Too soft and it doesn't draw from reality enough. So IDK. Like Miyazaki said, animation has to draw from life most of all. If you try to fit things into human consciousness (rather than mimesis)-in other words, if you directly pander to what the eyes want, everything eventually /inevitably/ devolves into "junk food." It's kind of sad that the west as a whole never found a universal idiom for animation in the same way that Japan has with Anime. Though maybe this was inevitable when you consider the strong emphasis on individualism in our culture. But on the other hand, the cinema tradition is basically the apotheosis of mimesis. In that the camera gives you nothing more or less than what is literally visually perceptible. It's a funny irony that western animated films are considered some of the very best of all time-I mean early Disney and Pixar-and the same is true of early Japanese cinema. Kurosawa, Ozu, etc. These guys routinely make the list for "best directors of all time." Not best Japanese directors. Best directors, full stop. Yet each culture ended up expressing itself most fully in the opposite medium from these early greats. I mean that anime is more normal than cinema in Japan, and the opposite is true in the west, with the opposite effects.

You want to know what good art looks like why don't you go watch The Adventures of Tintin or maybe blake & Mortimer or perhaps the stories of arsene Lupin aka the nighthood all done by cinar animations on incredible Studio that does not get nearly as much recognition that should for what it's contributed to the modern animation world. I don't like the art style but what I don't like even more is the fact that now today's teachers will hate and harass and Bully any single student who decides to do anything that deviates from calarts until that student either Falls in line or the teacher can come up with some sort of fake excuse to get them expelled. Or in more devious and terrible people the art teacher will actively hire other students to harass and Bully the student that they don't like to either get them to leave school or get them expelled from a fight because that is how terrible an evil art teachers are. They think they're Gods. And they will do everything as capable within their powers to control their students. Because these sickos realized that a lot of kids the only outlet that they have is their art but the same time they also realize if they want to control these kids they need to force them through abuse to realize that the only thing that they could ever do to ever get any sort of acceptance is to obey the calarts style that the teacher likes. I can give you a personal example my favourite art style is Belgian comic book style with firm lines and defined yet simple character shapes and a hard angled architecture style for the backgrounds and environments. This was a cartoon style that was defined in perfected by the cinar company. An animation company that made a lot of the cartoons that I grew up with and gave me my love of drawing animation but when I went to art class with the hopes that I could somehow replicate that same style all I got was hate and harassment from my art teacher because I was not following the approved calarts Style. Which made no sense to me. Why is one style of cartoon better than another it never made any sense until I was constantly harassed at, all by my art teacher at which point I realized how large this cancer is. There are so many better art styles out there so many wonderful different mediums and yet the only thing anyone will ever be taught in a quote-unquote art school is that you either do it in Cal arts style or you will be considered a freaking Pariah to the entire cartoon industry. And I say go pound sand up your nostrils to that. I wouldn't hate the calarts style if it wasn't for the fact that constantly slammed in the face at every turn screaming that it's the only be and all God ending on high delivered way to make quote-unquote adult animation cartoons. It's not and frankly the people who think that it is are some of the worst people to have ever existed they are on par with the people who look at a blank canvas and think that it's somehow some sort of amazingly epic expression of an artist. If it wasn't for the frankly Psychopathic way that these people gladly would commit murder if someone didn't like the art style of Gumball or freaking Adventure Time. That's when the idea of calarts style animation lost any legitimacy to me.

Look I'm sorry but you couldn't pay me to watch "calarts style" shows. I know that people say some of these shows are written well and are really funny, but I NEED to like the visuals too for my cartoons. I can't get past the simplicity of those designs and lack of emotional range in the characters....not like the expressions they get in shows like Grimm Adventures of Billy and Mandy. As a consumer, no thanks...keep your CalArts style shows. As an animator in the industry or other industry professional, it's business and there's other markets to tap into other than the "I grew up with ____ and this sucks compared to _____" audience (admittedly me lol)
