My theory is that the drops from the bosses that the witches trade in for their third rune are actually ingredients for some sort of spell or ritual to summon the demon that apparently “killed” the Supreme Witch (my other theory is that Bertha is the Supreme Witch in disguise, or a close servant of the Supreme carrying out her will). As Eloise hinted at, it’s probably so that the 8 witches can come together and kill it for good, finishing what the Supreme had started.

To expand on that, I believe Bertha is the demon. She is having the witches undo what bindings the supreme witch has placed and unlock her full powers. She is the demon they are going to have to come together to defeat!
