Looks like so much nicer weather than up here in New Hampshire.Is Alabama good for growing vegetables year round? The towns do not give people a hard time for having various animals on their property?
@CogHillFarm
@CogHillFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks john novick !! You can grow year round but we still get hard freezes and our lowest temps are in the high 20's, but our winters are short lived.....and seem to be getting shorter every year. And for the most part, a lot of Alabama is rural & those small rural towns could careless about small livestock....the biggest/closest city to me is Selma, population around 17,500(give or take) and you can have chickens in the city, & there are certain things & criteria you have to do for larger animals, such as a horse etc Hey thanks for commenting & asking!!!

I like the rocks at the front of the building. They don't like water (even a little bit) especially walking through it. Our goats are on grass 100% of the time and the hoof trimming is difficult to keep up with when they do not have anything to wear them down naturally. Nice job!

I just ran across your channel and subscribed. Checking your past videos you talked about selecting a breed of chicken. I do not have chickens now but I suggest you check out "Breese" chickens. Fast growing and heavy egg layer 200-250 per year. If you answer this tell me what state you are in please, I will be checking some of your past videos and may figure it out but just curious, I am in Ohio.
@CogHillFarm
@CogHillFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ron Larimer !! We are in Alabama...and I know that breed well...we actually only can get the American version here...the original is from Breese France, which is illegal to export....an amazing breed and the French claim it is the best tasting chicken in the world...and are they are actually the colors of the French Flag, Blue Feet, White Body, and Red Comb....and I also have incorporated the way the French feed the Breese in the last 4 weeks, with our own meat chickens, & that is adding lots of goats milk to their diet. And I do appreciate you suggesting it with me...I may actually try the American Breese sometime in the near future. Thanks again!!
@ronaldlarimer
@ronaldlarimer 7 жыл бұрын
I had just heard of the breed and looked into them myself I plan on getting a few chickens again this year just to teach my grand kids where eggs and chicken nuggets come from. I have only watched a few of your videos so far and enjoy them. Had I watched more I may have known better than to think you had not heard of them but I hadn't. I will be watching more of your past videos soon. Thank you.
@CogHillFarm
@CogHillFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words!! And It really is not a very well known breed here in the states, but I've seen its popularity starting to grow, & of course the French claim the American version is an imposter and is garbage. LOL Thanks again!!!

Awesome video! I just found your channel and thinking of getting a goat or two in a few weeks. Are all your goats the smaller ones? Your fence didn't seem very high and that's one thing I'm concerned about when I start building my pin. I don't want to be goat chasing because it's too low lol.
@CogHillFarm
@CogHillFarm 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome The Hall Hobby Farm &!thank you! Yes, our goats are the little ones, Nigerian dwarfs, and my fencing is 4' high, & I don't think they can get out of it...just be cautious about any corner braces, bc they can climb very well, and do not hang any type of feeder on the fencing either. Also, the only reason that I used the split rail wooden fence, is just bc of the location of our pen...it's just for looks really....if the goat pen was somewhere else, I'd prob use, no climb-goat fencing instead. Thanks again & good luck!!

Love it! Hope Tip makes the transition. Do you plan to let them out to forage, or just feed hay all year? How will you keep them out of the garden?

Good question....and I am sure, when they are older, we will let them out as long as we are out there with them, but I do have fences around my gardens, so I am ok there....the main thing I would worry about them destroying, would be our roses and blackberries. Thanks!

Looks great. It would get too hot here though. I might go with cement blocks up four feet and then wire above that.
