Great example of ultimate survival food kits. After freeze drying a little while now, I told my wife the other night: "Do you realize that if we were to use our emergency food supply, we will be eating better than we do normally?" She remarked with enthusiasm that it sure is a comforting feeling. I realize that I still have a great deal more I need to do. I have weaknesses that need to be strengthened in my plan, thank you so much Jonathan and Kylene for your videos and encouragement that help me along the way, they are great and informative. "The tear thing is a lie!" Funny! I want to be in your community! Keep up the good work and happy trails!

People say freeze dryers are expensive. I have one that i rent out. I do $10 a tray. It done so well I've bought another one. Lots of people just want 20 to 30 meals and don't want to buy one so they can make the mesls they want and healthier by renting one.

That sounds like a great start. Be sure to package that rice so it doesn't get the little worms in it. SO GROSS! Back in the day I also bought seasonings for the rice - those large Lawry's from Costco, herbs, Cajun, whatever, to make the rice taste good. ;)

I appreciate your showing the various ways to construct your emergency buckets. I like that you showed in the beginning how you can buy items from the grocery store that are “just add water” (ie the noodle side dishes), because not everyone can afford commercially made freeze dried food (ie Thrive Life, etc.), but most people CAN AFFORD a package of Knorr noodles. I also like how you showed the individualized “custom” buckets for the various dietary issues/ types. Both my husband and I have different dietary issues (one with Celiac disease, one a diabetic)…. Never thought to make “individual meals” buckets! Thank you!

If you haven't practiced loading up your vehicle for an emergency evacuation then you are doing yourself a major disservice. Prepping is about being able to react to an emergency and a fire, tornado, hurricane, mass casualty or invasion situation or anything really can put you in that position. I've had 4 emergency evacuations in my life and the first two were a learning experience to say the least. Folks, get your emergency gear ready for an evacuation and practice loading up and see how quickly you can get it done. Does it fit in your vehicle, did you have all the basic essentials plus your important documents? Did you have your routes planned and alternative routes mapped out on a physical map in case cell and gps go out or you don't have power for other reasons? Practice!

I made up food buckets for my family this past Christmas. We have gluten intolerant family members, so I was able to customize the buckets to everyone’s needs. The difference in homemade buckets and commercial buckets is the inclusion of meats and lack of chemicals/ heavy sodium content. I included candles, matches, water purification, and a small first aid kit along with some seasonings. Hopefully they like the gift. Thanks for sharing your bucket contents and recipe ideas as well as participating in this collaboration.

In the military MRE's they have freeze dried fruit most of the time it is some sort of fruit cocktail that is dried more like a cracker in shape than you did for your own freeze-dried fruit. They usually had crackers that are related to hard tack and a condiment pack. My husband said the guys in his unit would take the fruit, crackers, coffee creamer and some water to make something along the lines of a shortcake type of desert. It doesn't sound to healthy, but it was something to make do with what they had after having to eat those things for weeks at a time.

We added some small metal chip clips into our stashes so it will hold the bags close if the zipper fails. Its nice to see someone advocating for a good variety, thank you!

I got a chance to use one at a student's house. Now I am dreaming of getting one. Love seeing what you put in your buckets. Grab and go.

Wow! Wow! Wow! My mind is spinning with what to put in my bucket for an emergency. Not only did you give great food ideas, but the practical things you need to include as well I appreciate your thoughtful presentation more than I can say! I am off to start my list of what to put in my bucket! You both rock!

Really great ideas and I love the different take on items you can put in your food bucket. I'm more of a stir fry type so that most likely would be in mine, plus some fresh freeze dried fruits. Maybe even some high protein items would be a major winner.
