You can actually store fresh grapes over winter. You cut them on a long stem & then put the stem in water like a flower & store in a cool room or root cellar. the victorians used todo it and even had special vases for them.

Having grape clusters hanging down for picking like that is so cool! I want to do something like this with muscadines, but maybe on a smaller scale at first. How do you handle pests? Do you have a problem with birds, wasps, spiders, etc getting to your grapes?
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead 2 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of muscadines! We hardly have any pests bother the grapes. Sometimes late in the season, when grapes are starting to go bad, wasps will come.
@everettedl

@@TheQuarterAcreHomestead I see. That eases my mind a little. I just don't want a wasp nest to pop up haha. And dude, muscadine grapes are AWESOME. Theyr'e native to the southeast US, and they have an amazing flavor and are really sweet. The only downside is they have seeds. I have a couple of vines in containers right now, and I can't wait to get them in the ground. I highly recommend them!
@everettedl

@@Angvb14 yeah I find that's the way to go. They have to meet quotas at the stores, so they'll often pick them way before they're ready and you have to sort through them. On the vine, you know they're ready when they're soft and not firm. Sometimes they'll have a slight fragrance too.

Goals!! I'm trying to accomplish this on a back deck gazebo frame as the canvas top ripped and they don't make replacement for it. I might have to fill some of the gaps with wire but now I know I won't need to worry about it for another 5+ years 😳 Gardening truly does teach patience. I'm on my 3rd Spring but the squirrels and birds beat me to them this year netting for sure. How do yours not all dissappear?

Hey that's a cool arbor! I'm in Colorado and in my area I have a lot of bentonite clay. I'm not sure how my grapes are going to do long term. I dug large holes to plant 3 vines in, and used a mixture of regular dirt and sand. Two are doing well but my concord is growing very slow. Do you have a video on pruning? Was thinking about picking up about 3 grape vines FRM my local store and planting them in a planters box my hubby is building on the side of our deck and build a trellis type thing overhead to let the grape start growing up and over like yours.... Nice arbor. I see you have various sizes of grapes in each bunch. This is likely to be a boron deficiency. If you foliar spray just before and just after flowering this should help both fruit set and size consistency. Grapes love plenty of P and K also.

A bit late to the party! Curious as to how one might deal with outdoor critters disturbing the structure - e.g. - squirrels, birds, raccoon et al? It's nice to bring a book, or tea, or have a nice dinner. Other than that, the area should be left empty, as in spring there are falling flowers, and grapes in autumn, and the falling leaves in winter until you trim it.

I am so glad I found you! I am creating a food forest in my backyard and am brand new to it all. I am interested in a cutting and have seen the patreon link you provided. Two questions: 1.) Would the grapes make a huge mess on a deck below? I have a pergola over my deck and want to grow the grapes there. 2) I read that I can plant apple trees, etc. in the spring or fall. You shared that you send the cuttings only in the winter. Could grape cuttings be planted in the fall?
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead
@TheQuarterAcreHomestead Жыл бұрын
That is awesome! No, grapes won't make a huge mess below as long as you pick the grapes. They will shed quite a few leaves, but those are easily swept or blown off. For your second question, yes, fruit tress work best to plant in fall. But rooting grape cuttings is best done in spring. See more at this link: grapes.extension.org/when-is-the-best-time-to-take-cuttings-to-propagate-a-grape-vine-and-what-is-the-correct-propagation-procedure/
