I got so good that I could get to the unicycle vs orb level almost every time and then die every time. So much anguish lol. I'm tempted to boot up an emulator. I bet it would be a world record if anyone ever beat BT co-op. Or a first time ever. I wonder if the devs ever even played their own game because yeah... lol.

Just found this one, and as someone who's beaten Battletoads as well, let me give you a few pointers of my own: One: Memorize the warp locations. There are level warps in this game that Seer has failed to mention, which allows you to skip levels. They don't last long, but if you get them, you can completely skip a level or two. Example: There's a level warp in Turbo Tunnels that let you completely skip the Artic Caverns. Same thing in the Snake Tunnels. Learn where they are, and they'll let you skip some levels that you might find impossible. Of course, if you want to be a badass, go ahead and play through everything every single time you die. But for me, I after beating the Arctic Caverns for the twelfth time, the ability to skip it is a godsend. Two: the hit registry of this game can be a bit wonky, which can work to your advantage. You can often hit things without being near them, or on the same horizontal or vertical plane. Use this to keep out of enemy attack range, and punish them for it. Three: Your charge attack can stun or even kill a LOT of enemies outright. Use it, and use it often. Four: Memorization is your friend, unfortunately. Knowing the location of enemies and flies beforehand will allow you to keep as much life and lives as possible. Learn each stage inside and out. If you can find maps for them online, then study them. They'll be useful, ESPECIALLY in the high-speed vehicle sections. Five: You are NOT timed, except in very rare situations, like Rat Race, for instance. Take your time, move at your own speed, and you will rarely meet anything that you aren't ready for. Six: Each level is different. This is the important one. Each level is different, and can have wildly different gameplay mechanics, so expect to be blindsided if you're going into a level for the first time. Do not expect to be able to clear the game in your first sitting, since you'll have to spend several lives on each stage just learning everything. And that's all I got for general strats. Anything else is stage specific, so listen to Seer, because he knows what he's talking about, here.

The insidious thing about Battletoads’ difficulty is that practically every level is different. The escalating challenge of a game is ideally correlated with your skill, as each level prepares you for the next. But Battletoads can’t do that. The variety of challenges means that each level is only practice for itself.
@seer62513 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely. It's both admirable and crazy that they'd design full mechanics (like water physics, bike physics, etc.) just for one level and then you'd never see it again. Even semi-similar mechanics like the bikes in lvl 3, vs the surfboard in lvl 5 have differing functionalities. If something like that got released today, it'd be met with such harsh criticism lol

I just beat it last weekend (US version)...after more than 30 years...back in the early 90's I was able to get to the third rat (level 10), but never could beat that motherf....no mather how hard I tried. Now, passed 31 years, I tried it again. Today we have internet, lots of gameplays, tips and, most important, we have emulators and save states that allows us to practice especific levels or sections of the game until we can master it. And this is battletoads is all about: mastering and memorizing every enemy, every boss, every single detail of the game. After many months and a lot of patience, I assure one can beat it without problems.
@the8thark2 жыл бұрын
This game is all about zerging it. As in getting so far, dying and learning how to beat it then rinse and repeat on each each part of the game. Learn through dying. So by the end you know everything that happens and can plan ahead.

Now if you guys think that standart Battletoads is a difficult game, you're so much wrong... I had a broken game in my youth, wich could freeze almost anywere in the game exept a few levels. There were even impossible spots, were it got frozen always. I had to find warp zones myself, cause I had no internet to overcome them. I had to learn every spot to avoid the hanging of the game. It took me YEARS of continues struggle to learn everithing and I finaly beat it! When I did, it was like one of the best moments in my life, the climax of happyness!

Fun fact, in 2-player, Clinger Winger is absolutley impossible, because the second player's bike simply won't move so they'll just die and die and die. It was fixed for the Japanese version, which also toned down the games difficulty in general; this version was then the base for the Genesis port of the game that no one ever talks about, though that version apparently plays like crap in a lot of ways according to like five comments I saw. Another fun fact, there's a sequel on the Gameboy that's simply titled "Battletoads", and then a bad port of the original game under the name "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World". Game Boy games loved vague titles; shout outs to Donkey Kong, which looks like a throwaway port of the arcade game and then turns out to be this massive sequel with a hundred levels and a bunch of new mechanics that is basically a precursor to the first Mario vs Donkey Kong game and arguably one of the best Gameboy games in general.

Yeah. Terra Tubes. It took me sooo long to realize attacking the rubber ducky was an exercise in futility. You can stun the ducky. Only stun it. If you don't get away FAST, you'll get hit. Technically, it's not a one-hit kill, but once you're hit once, you get stun-locked and have no way out. So, functionally, it's a one-hit kill. Turbo Tunnels, for sure. If you have the dedication to get past the Turbo Tunnels, chances are you've got what it takes to beat the game. I had the Nintendo Power that covered this game. Honestly, it wasn't much use. I eventually quit referencing it because you simply just had to put in the time.

This game was so goddamn hard that even my first baby brained play of it as a wee game genie cheating child it was still impossible for my undeveloped hands and brain to beat it. Because "dying" isn't the only penalty. The snake level? You drop down and have to start over a lot, the water level? Even if you have infinite lives- Guess what fucko? You STILL have to get PAST the obstacles. Dying over and over in a spot is not FORWARD MOVEMENT. Yes I am admitting fully that WITH INFINITE LIVES the game was still nigh impenetrable. One day I'll reclaim my honor and ego and beat that shit without cheats.
