Something else to remember when it comes to spider mites, or any other pest for that matter, building a resistance to pyrethrin's is how much that particular pesticide is being used in your area. Pyrethrin's are a natural pesticide derived from chrysanthemums, so it would be easier to develop resistance as opposed to a chemically derived pesticide. In my area - farmland/agriculture - it would be much more difficult to find a pesticide that is still effective than, say, a city where pesticides are not used on a regular basis.

I found a great way to get rid of fungus gnats, fungus problems. Use cinnamon, sprinkle on soil. The fungus gnats hate it, if that does not eradicate them, use aquarium gravel to top dress the soil. This suffocates them, prevents eggs from hatching. I tried the first, it helped, but they were still there. Only on one plant. Tried the aquarium gravel, they died out. Yay.

This is a great video! I have a question. This video is considerably more current than the one showing how to make your own homemade DIY pest spray. At that time you said you had used your spray twice and planned to use it as a preventative treatment once a month. Have you followed through with that plan and has it been a success? Or have you had reinfestation of pests which prompted you to make this video? I ask because I just spent $50 on the soaps and 1-gal spray bottle and am preparing to spray all my plants (over 200, so I'm really hoping you've been successful long-term). Thanks for all your great content. This is the most useful plant channel I watch by far. Great, concise presentation.

Hello! I found a moderate infestation on my beautiful bird of paradise yesterday. I sprayed the plant with a firm shower stream and then sprayed down with a mixture of rubbing alcohol, water and Castile soap and used an old makeup brush to brush down the leaves. I’ve been hoping to repot the plant recently as it has roots growing out the bottom of the pot but am worried that this may be too much stress for the plant to take on top of the spider mites. Would you suggest waiting, or repotting now?
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife Жыл бұрын
Unless it lost a ton of leaves in the process you should be ok to go ahead and repot but I would only do it if it’s severely root bound.

Great advice! Only thing that I tested and didn´t work out was H202 - I watered the soil with H202 and right after the spidermites started crawling out all alive unharmed :-( So since that moment of despair, I water the plant from the top with pesticide and this helped me a lot - the pesticided did kill them in the soil (none crawled out and the numbers started going down quickly).
@imaginarydreamer
@imaginarydreamer 6 ай бұрын
Same thing is happening to me now! Which pesticide did you use in the soil? I keep finding clusters of mites crawling out and all over the pot, especially terra cotta pots and not even 99% alcohol kills them!
@SparkleInMoonlight
@SparkleInMoonlight 6 ай бұрын
@@imaginarydreamer In the soil: systemic neonicotinoid - kills pests in the soil and spread through the roots to the entire plant. For mites, great one is acetamipirid (Careo Substral). For thrips: flupyradifurone is the best (Sanium System). Vertimec is also great on mites and ok on thrips and can be used in the soil. Neem oil is much weaker than these and has limited reach, but if you have nothing else available, you can use it in the soil too. It´s necessary to treat mites in the soild to be successful. Good luck. This is for the EU. However, I´m sure you can find something similar in your region.

Well, crud - I guess I was in semi-panic mode because I discovered they were infesting one of my plants and that plant was touching my peacock plant. On inspecting the peacock plant, I found mites on it. I had to trash the other heavily infested plant, but decided to treat the peacock because the infestation wasn't too bad. I started off just wiping front and back of the leaves every other day with a mix of water, vinegar and a little drop of dish soap, then spraying the leaves a couple times a day with filtered water to help keep the humidity up. However, I watched another video where they recommend getting pest spray, so I found a mite spray for house plants at the garden center today and hosed my peacock plant down with it. I'm hoping I didn't just doom the plant because no, I did NOT test a single leaf. Ugh. Prayers for my prayer plant, please. 🙏 I've got it isolated from my other plants, though, and did a thorough cleaning where it had been sitting before. I heard a life cycle of around two weeks, so I've just determined I'll keep the plant isolated for the entire month just to be sure... provided I didn't just kill it with the pest spray. Mahalo for this really detailed video!

Hey there! This was very useful, thank you. I still have a problem though. I own a frangipani (or plumeria), it was very healthy but then I started noticing some yellowing on the leaves and I thought it might be some nutrient deficiency and I tried being consistent with fertilization and watering. The yellowing only got worse by the day and on closer inspection I found webbing on several leaves and concluded it to be spider mites. I searched for treatment and thus used a spray of neem oil and alcohol solution and wiped down the leaves top and bottom. On the next few days the entirety of the leaves turned yellow and brown and started falling rapidly. After watching this video, I believe that the frangipani was too sensitive to the solution. Here comes my question: At this current situation, with all the leaves - except the new growth - already fallen, what should I do to save my tree?

Hi I know this is an old video but it is one of the very best I’ve seen on this all too common problem. I hope you wouldn’t mind responding if you see it and have a minute or two to respond. My Question: is it possible that spider mites could have possibly been transmitted via prepackaged Jiffy Peat Pellets?? Last spring I was able to find Moonflower seeds. I was super excited and put a great deal of time, love and hope into them after a spending a few years in a deep depression. The very first leaves unrolled into sad, deformed and pathetic little metaphors for my future. Every little seedling as well as $200 in dahlias were covered in stippling and webbing. I threw out my entire collection of tubers from last year. I did manage to get ONE dahlia bloom. This year I’ve ordered more and am gun shy to say the least this spring. I did not buy the peat pellets though.
@AlohaPlantLife
@AlohaPlantLife 2 ай бұрын
You know, I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot lately in relation to bags of potting soil and most of my research suggests the answer is no. Pellets I feel like would be even less likely to have them just because of the process that they go through to be made into pellets would probably kill anything on them.

If they’re always crawling and traveling with the wind, getting onto you, your pets, etc., then why only treat your plants for 3-4 weeks? I mean, they’re just going to keep coming, right? So it seems an endless battle!

In 2 plants I've got from stores like home depot (separate times) when i got home and checked their soil ive noticed they had like 2-3 spiders crawling on the soil after moving it around. They're not tiny like spider mites but literally baby spiders or a small kind of spider. Ive seen them look red/orange and black in color, and they have a big bulby belly (like the belly shape of a black widow but way smaller) are these still considered mites or just some kind of spiders? Im treating the recent plant i got and have her in a different room because of these baby spiders I've seen but i wanna know for sure what this is 😭 the plant is super healthy no webbings and nothing on the leaves either! Honestly, I find heat to be a bigger factor than humidity when it comes to the spread of spider mites, but also if your plant is drying out too much the plant becomes distressed and they sense that and attack. And when it’s super hot out our plants start drying out more quickly than we realize and then we don’t water them as soon as we should and it just becomes this vicious cycle that spider mites love.

@@AlohaPlantLife thanks. I thought I got rid of mine on one plant about 1 years ago. Now it looks like it may be back. So was wondering if this is a new or old infestation and if I should change the soil. Thanks

It’s awful and I always feel so much more bad for plants that get spider mites versus plants that get other types of pests.

I use cups on the soil because a lot of service area for them to escape the wet conditions. If you can put your plant in direct sun that'll help and outside too on the ground.
