I keep my tent at the top because it's the first thing I need when I'm done hiking. But to each their own. Your way is good too.

Hubby and I backpack together so we divide up our carry between us. We split the tent and pole/stakes between us (we use a cheaper tent) along with I take food/ cook stuff and he keeps extra water and bed rolls etc. We each pack our own survival gear, essentials and luxury items. If you are willing to tote it, there really is no wrong way to pack if it works for you 🏕️🥾

If it can get wet from rain, it goes outside my pack. If it absolutely must stay dry, it goes in my compactor bag. If it can get damp, it goes in my pack on top of the compactor bag. That’s my basic philosophy. 👍🏼

I put my wool socks, leggings, and sleep top in the bottom of my quilt when I pack up. That way everything is nice and warm when I need to change at the end of the night.

Really enjoyed this video.. great tips on organizing a backpack for a longer hike! The way you explained layering and gear placement was super helpful. Also cool to see some of the new gear you tried out and how it worked for you. Looks like you were well-prepared for the Colorado Trail!

Nice tips. As a 2024 thru hiker on the AT I found it most important to pack and unpack the same way each day. This no lost items. Glad u had a water proof pack though. I found trash compactor bag work better for me.

Love it. A lot to process and compare to how I pack. One thing that I always do is keep my tent near the top (or on the outside when I use a tarp). I pack everything in first before leaving my tent in the morning. Then at night, I can keep everything safe (from water or from losing) in my bag while I set up my tent first.

Honestly, it looks good. If it works for you then don't change a thing. People's minds are unique so the way a person packs/organizes is unique to the way their brain sorts things. My old woman brain packs things in a certain order and if I deviate too much from that then I'm all out of sorts.

Great tips. Looks like you don't pack a lot of layers just base, chilly and rain. No mid layer? Generally I don't, but am heading to Patagonia in a couple weeks and added a mid layer to my kit. I've had a pee bag in the past, but decided to just get out and pee if/when I need to and I'm okay with that nowadays.

You had to remove a lot of stuff and open your pack liner to get to your tent. I want my tent closer to the top and outside of the liner in case I have to set up in the rain, or pack a wet tent. Otherwise, pretty similar to how I pack.

Thanks for touching on this very important subject. Nothing worse than constantly looking for things out there. I have also weighed my organized bags separately before a long, thru hike. That way, I can better reason with my overly safe and prepared self. By the way, how did that Ursack work out for you?

If I got my days food on the outside, I keep my shelter very near the top of the pack. No sense in having to pull out all that other stuff if I need to get set up in the rain
