You bring up an excellent point while indirectly pointing out the hypocrisy if not the double standards of today's "do what makes you feel happy" rule. People are encouraged to attend whatever university they want to and major in whatever they want even if it's against their best interest. People are encouraged to move to X or Y city, or X or Y country. Date who you want and have sex with who you want. But when it comes to food, that mentality of "do what you want" doesn't apply. Today's secular world categorizes food into "good" and "bad." If you eat the "bad" there's a stigma to it; the tactic of fear mongering is put into place - you'll get cancer, you'll get fat etc. (Yet we don't do that for alcohol and its effects, or even tobacco - though stigmatized, smoking is still socially acceptable). There's also shame - you're hurting the planet, you're hurting animals. This mentality also applies to what clothes we wear and where we shop (i.e. box store vs independent clothing store; Whole Foods vs regional grocery chain). Overall, it's bizarre and I'm not exactly sure how we got to this point.

I love how perfectly you said everything, because I agree. I don’t understand how we got to this point and it’s extremely upsetting to place morals on food… Thank you for this beautifully written explanation. I wish I could pin it on a wall for everyone to see

Even for college/universities, there's still stigmas. For example, if one wants to be a woman's studies major, they often getting looked down upon for getting a "useless" degree, vs someone who is getting a degree in a STEM field. It really is a double standard. Even my own mom once told me when I had straight As one semester in college, compared to my brother who got Cs "Well, being a music major is music major is much easier than being a computer engineering major." Uh. no.

@@MorganVenn Funny, your reply came through just as I finished my 'intuitive shopping'. I was happy to quote you. I've thought about this subject a lot, and I think the satisfaction factor is the key I've been near to realising, and now thanks to your quote it's all come together. Thanks! :D PS: Just watched the vid again whilst replying and it's funny how you mention ice cream in this vid. This week after work I bought a big tub of chocolate ice cream every day and devoured it. I used to just buy one now and then, but this week I just followed my desire. When you mnentioned ice cream I went to check my shopping and realised I didn't buy any. It simply didn't come to mind. Intuition doesn't always have to be conscious. It becomes a habit to be intuitive after consciously practising it. It just gets easier and easier, better and better. Thanks! :D

Freedom and gratitude. I E has banished bingeing. I can eat one reeses cup instead of 10. I eat vegetables and eggs for breakfast one day, oatmeal and banana the next, and nothing on another. I now exercise because it makes me feel amazing. My weight has stabilized, and because I no longer restrict, I love how my cravings and desires surprise me. Healthy, nutrient dense foods are wonderful. Having a blizzard with my husband? Also wonderful. I rarely finish them because I know I can always have another one another day. I wish I'd learned this in my 20's rather than my 50's, but it's so good. AND my 20 year old daughter seems to naturally eat this way despite her mom. Yay! I've tried to warn her about the trap of diet culture. She's getting through college without seeming to worry about weight. She wasn't even sure what her weight was. And she's a fashion major! There's hope.

I tried to start IE last year and earlier this year, and now i am finally just understanding it. Even after i bought the book as well. I definitely needed to be in recovery or recovered for IE to work for me. Because now that i've dedicated myself to no longer living a life of starving, purging/binging, or saying awful things about myself or my body, implementing the basics of IE work so much easier for me ❤ I used to panic and wait anxiously for when i can eat again, stare at the clock, etc. etc. but now i truly understand and know that i can eat the food i want WHENEVER I want. I think i've already gotten over the stage of eating Fast food, Snacks etc. Because i realized they made me feel awful/lethargic now. I'm going towards having balanced meals with the food i enjoy.

The people who can count macros for the rest of their lives with no problems that's great for them, but for people like me who don't want to make food the centre of their lives and thoughts, this works perfectly!

I think she is so right, feeling comfortable and confident in your life like your body and the way you eat is key to a happy life!! I do need advice though, my doctor told me I need to gain weight and my dad and the rest of my family is pushing me to eat when I'm not hungry or comfortable eating and the types of food I'm not comfortable eating because of my doctor saying this. I am comfortable at my size currently and I don't want to gain weight but my dad is telling me I don't have a choice and I have to gain weight. So I don't know what to do, I'm afraid if I do gain weight I will not be comfortable with my body and I don't want that, I'm comfortable with my body right now and I don't know why I have to change for anyone else.
@MorganVenn
@MorganVenn 2 жыл бұрын
That's so upsetting! If you are happy and confident in your body and with your relationship with food, no one has anything else to say about it! Even if you are naturally thinner, or "underweight" but have a perfectly healthy relationship with food (in that you aren't restricting yourself) then I don't see why anyone should tell you different. However I'm a little concerned with what you said about being afraid of gaining weight and not being comfortable in your body... that tells me you might be fearful of weight gain and have a fearful relationship with food/your body? I don't want to presume anything, but you will remain beautiful, and loved for who you are regardless of how your body changes! All that matters most is like you said, feeling comfortable and confident in your life ❤️

@@MorganVenn Thank you so much for responding!!! I love your videos, they help me alot! ❤️❤️ And I do restrict myself with foods and I clean eat. So I guess I don't have the healthiest relationship with food but I'm trying to do better with eating foods that I'm uncomfortable eating at that special time, for example if I'm craving an apple I might tell myself "no you have to have an orange because it's lower in calories and you had a bigger then normal breakfast" but I'm trying to just eat that apple if I want it. But I agree if I'm comfortable with my body now which I am, I don't see why I have to change just because I'm not at a weight most people my age and height are.

Thank you for sharing! I think it's important to share your journey and knowledge so other people can learn by your example. One great tip can help to change someone's life forever. The new world of intuitive eating is amazing, I feel free because I don't worry about food anymore. You make some great points here that people often neglect to think about. It's not about encouraging disordered eating because you can eat as much or as little as you want, it's about taking away the things that trigger disordered eating. It's more mindset than actual eating.

Thank you so much for making this video. I feel really motivated to start eating intuitively at the moment. I’m finally just completely fed up with spending most of my day feeling guilty because I’ve eaten something I ‘shouldn’t have’. I’m fed up with only feeling happy and proud of myself if I’ve eaten ‘well’. To be honest I genuinely can’t imagine ever being able to eat intuitively at the moment. But videos like this remind me that it can be different, and I’m sure I’ll get there. Thank you so much again!❤️

Actually, several studies have shown that intuitive eating is the best way to care for our bodies (regardless of body size) since several factors outside of food & exercise affect body size (genetics, environment, culture etc). Also, labels like obese and overweight come from BMI, and based on facts and studies, we now know that BMI is an incredibly flawed and inaccurate measure of health.
@leabeauty837
@leabeauty837 2 жыл бұрын
@@janaesmith9107 I can guarantee you more studies have shown if you are prone to overeating.. eating at your leisure with no moderation practices will lead to over consumption. Regardless off what bmi says, there's such a thing as being overweight and being underweight. Both of which can lead to severe health problems, the worst of them can be fatal.

I think it's a great video what you made. It's still important to eat healthy though. I wouldn't just encourage people to eat all their cravings, but instead replace some cravings with healthy desserts for example. And have that option there, before jumping into eating a cake full of refined sugar. Really just health wise, knowing that after that, if you still want it, you can have your cake or something. But always keeping a balance, and not falling into extremes.When I was younger I would eat all my cravings and it was pretty bad... But tell me, what do you think about that?

I agree; every dietician or person I've ever heard speak about intuitive eating is thin. They may have gained some weight by allowing themselves food freedom, but they are still thin by society's standards. So when they say it shouldn't be about weight, or that you have to let go of the fear of gaining some weight, it just kind of rings hollow (because it's an entirely different thing to go from a size 4 to a size 8 than it is to go from a size 16 to a size 20).
@nadiaramtell-vandrmind7321

This fear is totally normal, it's ok to feel this way🙂. I've had these thoughts too when I started eating intuitively, all I craved is cake and sugar, and junk food, I didn't trust myself to allow me to eat anything I want because from the dieting times I remembered how during or after diet I started binging and I hated myself for it and I gained even more weight. But once I let go and truly allowed myself to EAT ANYTHING (and it took me a couple of years, not a fast process to completely change your thought process :) I realized that this fear what was causing this overeating and these restrictions were fueling my cravings for junk food. Now I look at food that I was eating before and I ask myself "why?" because it's not appealing to me anymore. I think I say it in all my videos, or maybe most of them😂, what you resist persist. If you can have that cake anytime you want you might not crave it anymore because you can have this at any time. You gotta check with your body though, because that food might look so appealing, but your body knows better. Or you might crave it anyway, if emotional eating or other food disorders involved. That's where self-awareness and self-education is crucial - I couldn't afford a therapist so I read all the books and learned all the information on my own and figured why I eat, what emotions I feel, and what can i do instead of eating to feel better. And began to practice self-love, self-care, taking time for myself, getting to know myself. It's a journey, the sooner you start, the sooner it gets easier and better. There is a learning curve though. Don't afraid to ask for help and find your own answers. I truly wish there are no more people who suffer and stress because of food. Eating is natural and we should be allowed to eat and we should be allowed to feel good about it.

But I am just so so scared to let go. Today I ate breakfast out, and I am REALLY trying not to log my kcal to the app / not calculate it in my head. t takes so much effort from my side! Hi Morgan! I really enjoyed ur video. Isn’t a little bit of balance mentality necessary though? Cuz even if we aren’t thinking about how much we weigh, the food we consume is still connected to our health issues. I am all for intuitive eating and I think it’s the best thing ever but I think we still need balance as well. Like recognizing some food r unhealthier than the other and finding a balance to stay healthy. Just a thought. Love your videos ❤️

The truth is when you really listen to your body it tells you what it needs. But you're right you can choose healthier options. If you crave sweet, don't have white sugar, have a date instead. etc. Junk is junk whether you eat intuitively or not. So best not to keep it around.

I am 14 years& I need to gain like around 2 kg to be at my healthy weight (had anorexia,got at a healthy weight&lost a little bit of weight again) and until now I tried gaining that weight by just eating a lot, but not intuitive. But that makes my stomach hurt and feels not really comfortable&like in flow with myself and my body for me :/ my goal is real intuitive eating because that's the most natural thing we can do, so do you think I can do this now? love uuu so much morgan, so happy for you that you are happy&healthy🦋🦋🦋

I’m in no way an expert, and please correct me if I am wrong, but our bodies are very likely to get to their natural set point weights, where they’re happy, as long as we honour all mental and physical hunger signals and cravings. I am in recovery from anorexia myself and at the beginning, you should definitely follow a meal plan, since your hunger cues might be alll over the place and you don’t wanna end up eating too little. HOWEVER, I am sure, that you have heard of extreme hunger before, which is your body telling you that it needs more food in order to heal itself or gain more weight to be able to do so.. so in conclusion: if I was in your shoes I would defo talk to an expert and then try to eat intuitively and see whether you’re able to honour your cravings and hunger signals or if your Ed voice is still too loud.

Hii! I’ve been in the same weight gain boat (although not from anorexia so it may be different) and I found that intuitive eating in that point in time is not entirely possible. you can use it to decide which foods you are craving, but ultimately until you gain the necessary weight you’re going to have to eat more than your body is asking for ❤️ Intuitive eating will be there on the other side!! Remember it’s not always right for everyone all the time

Hi Pauline! I am not an expert either, and the two other girls who responded gave great answers, I'm sure it depends from person to person, in your case you might have to eat past your normal feelings of "fullness" but I also believe your body is smart and will tell you what it needs, so I agree with Louisa's set point statement. I would definitely recommend working with a dietitian or doctor if you need to medically gain weight, especially if eating a lot is causing you pain (you might have food intolerances / could be eating too fast?) but regardless I'm so proud of you for wanting to recover from anorexia, you are so so strong ❤️ you deserve only the best of life

Question 🙋‍♀️ and please anyone answer (help me out) so I have pcos and I’m trying to figure out what works for me in terms of eating / trying not to gain a whole load of weight. I have learned that eating 1200 calories a day is too little and bad for metabolism etc. which is generally around what I would eat In a day. So I’ve heard to reverse diet to help increase the metabolism and no be in starvation mode. But if I’m intuitive eating and not counting calories and am still eating around 1200 calories not on purpose but just because I’m not hungry enough to eat 3 means and snacks etc then I’d this bad for my body still? Idk if this makes sense but I feel so stuck on what to do and how to be happy/healthy but still not gaining a lot of fat

Intuitive eating while strength training and being active is way better to maintain than tracking calories when women get older we have many hormonal issues this might prevent that if we are eating and keeping our body fed while working out / stretching keeping our mind and body at ease! I used to track calories and I don’t now I’m building muscle and drinking smoothies/ eating healthy throughout the day.

A couple of things. First, certain foods (mostly those that contain chemicals and are made in a factory or have artificial sweeteners) are actually addictive and can sometimes even MESS with the body's appetite regulation/intuition, imo. So, I would suggest that it would be ideal to practice intuitive eating only with REAL foods and to save the chemical-laden foods for very rare treats. Second, while intuitive eating is good in principle, it gets much harder to practice as you get older. The reason is, many of us put on weight as we get older (I was a big believer in intuitive eating when I was 119 pounds but less so now). I know "that should be okay" etc etc but many of us have bodies that would like to maintain a higher weight than the ideal for health or fitness. If you are in this category you know what I mean. For people like us, "pure" intuitive eating might not work, but utilizing some of the principles of it are certainly a good idea! Finally, there is NO WAY I will accept that McDonalds is healthy or okay to eat every day under any circumstances!!!! But as a treat, it might be okay if you really, really have a craving.

Hey so I was diagnosed with PCOS a bit over a year ago. Because of this I get intense sugar cravings, but sugar is also more unhealthy for me to eat. I'm worried that if I start doing intuitive eating and honouring my cravings then I'll just eat sugar way too often, and I'm already kinda close to diabetic so I'm kinda scared. However, dieting has also not worked for me and only makes me sick or unhappy. Thoughts?

I think you’re binge eating because you’re still mentally restricting!! You’re telling yourself “only one chocolate” and then you feel like “ugh I’ve had two I should just eat the rest” because you feel like you’ve failed… but you haven’t failed!! It’s normal to eat more dessert one day vs the next, and that’s why I love intuitively eating, it normalizes all amounts of food. Also I’m speaking from my experience and thoughts haha not sure if you have the exact same thoughts but that’s what I’ve realized causes binging

Omg first of all, I’m sorry she says that to you and she has no right to. That sounds extremely toxic, or maybe she herself is stuck in a diet mindset, but still please know that you don’t have to believe her beliefs around food. You CAN have more than one serving of carbs in a day, in fact it’s healthy to have carbs with every meal!! I would say a tip would be try to ignore what she says, or if she keeps persisting and saying thinks like that, ask her “what is your intent by saying that? Are you calling me fat? Should I be eating less” that’s a direct way to talk about it, or you could say more nicely “well I’m young and active and hungry so I’m going to honor my body’s hunger and eat more of what I want. It’s not that big of a deal” ahhh I’m sorry, sending hugs and please know it gets better ❤️

I relate in some kind of a way. I train consistently for almost a year now and even thought I see changes in my strength and my muscles I feel terrible at some moments. Because even thought I eat pretty normal with empasis on whole foods I don't want to restrict myself and I drink beer few times a week, I eat anything sweet when I want to. My main problem is that I'm bloating pretty easily and my body collects so much water especially in my arms and stomach. I considered counting calories but I know that will be pretty toxic for me, so few weeks ago I decided to just be more minded about when I'm really hungry and to not eat out of habit (sweets when I'm bored or with coffe). I eat everything still but when I actually have cravings or when I'm hungry. I make deserts for myself and I'm eating less processed sugars. From that moment I began to notice I'm less bloated in every part of my body. Few years ago I tried keto and I didn't bloat at all but in my opinion that is bs, because I don't ever want to restrict myself or forbid any kind of food, u just have to find balance and maybe try to see which food maybe doesn't suit your metabolism or your body.

a humble tip would be, try to start eating consciously, observe your emotions at that time, if your heart is beating fast try take some deep breaths, witness the possible fear that is there, the thought that it may end a binge again, be present, breath and say "i am able to stop eating whenever i want." I choose to stop now but i can have some more food later if i want."
