The man put A LOT OF EFFORT into making this book. The papers and binders are not cheap. They will last a lifetime if you take care of it. The information took time and effort to compile. Its qorth the price
@haxwithaxe10 ай бұрын
I've been working on a similar thing for a 3x5 flip up notebook format. It isn't as comprehensive but it will include a bunch more now that I've seen this. Something I have that he doesn't is the local detailed band plan.
@DjR630710 ай бұрын
And hopefully not the price tag either lol

This looks really very good... I'd created something sort of like this myself as a reference guide, just not on the Rite in the Rain paper (doesn't work on an ink jet printer like I have) but I laminated the sheets instead. This one has a few things I didn't think to include, but will start working on very soon!! Thanks for sharing this out!

Thanks for another great video. The field guide is interesting, and it is certainly worth having something like it for your own area. (I have made a similar guide for the PNW that I give to members of my local radio club.) The only concern that I have with the guide you show in the video is the $99 price tag. That is IMO just too expensive.
@dovetomarc10 ай бұрын
Agree. The pricer is really out of line. He will sell some but not a good long term bet to sell any large quantities IMHO
@KM4ACK10 ай бұрын
You have to factor in the cost of material plus the research time to customize for your local area. Cost of printing, time and labor all add up.
@markt.345410 ай бұрын
I'm building one of those myself. I was going to laminate, and hadn't thought of printing on write in the rain paper. Font size is a consideration for me too. I'm adding contacts for local officials in mine, as will as the local and district ARES ECs. I'm also adding some scanner frequencies of interest.

I think it's a great concept. For those complaining about the cost, the notebook itself is $18 and there's about $20 in paper. You're at $40 buying the binder and blank paper yourself. If you've got a laser printer, you could save some $$. However, a lot of time/effort will go into formatting, collecting the information you find relevant, and putting it all together. I'm not sure what you value your time at, but I consider my time to be worth more than $60/hr and I know it would take me much longer than an hour to format everything.

That is awesome. Lots of great information, well thought out. I have the exact binder and a handwritten guide I've been updating here and there for a few years now. You need a laser printer to print your own pages. Ink Jet ink doesn't work on that paper. I recommend upgrading to the battle board scout small with their 6 ring binder insert. The Rite in the Rain binder doesn't last, it splits at the fold quickly. Funny you should mention it, but I have a credit card magnifier in a zippered file pocket, just in case.

a POTA specific log would be great. I printed my own on RiR paper. when i get to the field, step 1, lay out log. then set up radio and antenna. If it is super humid, my paper will be wavy.. so I know to use my RiR tablet.

Nice guide but $99 really?
@KM4ACK10 ай бұрын
Everything costs more these days. The binder and paper alone aren't cheap. Then factor in time for research & production. I don't think $99 unfair.
@jeffdhartman10 ай бұрын
Yep. Seems excessive to me. But something is worth what someone will pay for it.
@ch3md10 ай бұрын
The binder is $15 and a pack of 300 blank pages is $52. So for < $30 you can assemble the guide yourself. Of course there is the time in obtaining the content and printing it. But $99 is a bit much.
@TomZ2310 ай бұрын
That doesn't include the additional options. Yikes!

That is really some useful information to have either in your pack, vehicle or even at home at the station. Thanks for sharing. I will have to look into this. Totally understand about the eyesight isn't what it used to be!! I like all that information that was included. I do think a very basic first aid module would be nice and if you were hiking it might be nice to have a module on survival, but you do have to be careful, that could make it a lot thicker. Thanks for sharing, Jason. Juddie - WD8WV
@KM4ACK10 ай бұрын
That's exactly why I like the module idea. Have a basic version and then add the modules that suit your personal needs. Thanks for the comment.
@hallen409410 ай бұрын
Have been working on one of these myself often referred to in the military as an "aid memoire" or grab file...... fact is there's an outline format BUT your personal file will be as individual as you are..... add / keep what you need and bin what you don't use / need. It should be constantly evolving with you... Use...Evaluate....Adjust. Wondering where to start.... ?.. list out information you think you may need.... what do you struggle to recall..... can you recall it in a hurry in the dark.... when your mind could be fogged with external influences.... just woken up by severe weather or a rapidly changing event.... Understand this in the worst possible situation you can read from and write to something like this when the powers out its dark and you have a torch in your mouth or a candle. It's value cannot be overestimated...... ask me how I know 😉👍🏻

Excellent execution on a good idea! Using water resistant paper is a great way to go! Price may be high for some folks, but it looks like it's worth it. Binder colors are currently limited to 'lost forever if dropped in the woods.' Should probably include neon green, blaze orange, firetruck yellow, etc. As orders come in, I suspect the list of available radio notes will increase, and hopefully drop in price. It's nice that the hole spacing lends itself to 'add your own pages'; I think I would add a sheet of reflective mylar for a signal mirror, fire starter, etc. For first aid, I recommend a section on serious field trauma, not just boo-boos and band-aids. Thanks for sharing!
