I cook for my Daughter every night & I look forward to getting home & cooking on some of the finest equipment on Earth. totally diff kettle of fish. At work all the utensils are commercial (Ford Escort) at Home (Ferrari) in car terms. It is a life long investment that will be passed down through generations to come. Provided they put in the care & up keep.

Collectibles are great when you are wealthy, regardless of whether it is watches, purses, or Star Wars figures. As one Pez collector said, collecting is a disease. The other problem is that you don’t know what will go up in value. If everyone through a certain Star Wars figure would be valuable and go up in price, they would all buy one and leave it in the box - but that act by itself means that the item is no longer rare and will appreciate as much as you think. I would just go with the rule that you don’t buy stuff you don’t need with money you don’t have to impress people who don’t care. And yes, I’m not as wealthy as a Kevin, but I am 50 and retired. Because I don’t get caught up in buying stuff, whether it is collectible or not. I have a one hundred dollar outfit that looks good and feels great. I got it from the same place that I buy groceries- Costco. And if someone wants to judge me because I’m not wearing an Armani, fuckem. You judge people based on what they bring to the table, not the cost of their outfit, or watch, or jewelry. Kevin is right - these people are trying to sell you on an image. That is how they make their money. They want you to buy a 20K purse so that you can show your friends that you have a 20K purse. Guess what. They get rich off your purchase. Same with Lambos and Ferraris. That is why the owner of LV is the riches man in the world today. Because they are able to convince you that a $100 purse is worth thousands. That’s a hefty margin - at your expense. I’d rather have the money and invest it in a stock.

You're not doing anything wrong, you just don't have the required skillset to profit off a down market, folks that are making profit in this market are pros and experts with in-depth knowledge and skillset.

A lot of folks downplay the role of advisors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.
