You mentioned how Kuwanger is a throwback to Cut Man, but most people don't notice that most bosses in the first couple X games are direct references to their original counterparts. Like so: Cut Man - Boomer Kuwanger Guts Man - Armored Armadillo (mostly the stages) Ice Man - Chill Penguin Fire Man - Flame Mammoth Elec Man - Spark Mandrill Bomb Man - This one doesn't have a clear comparison, but I guess Launch Octopus' torpedoes are a kind of bomb? X2 continues this: Metal Man - Wheel Gator Wood Man - Wire Sponge Bubble Man - Bubble Crab Quick Man - Overdrive Ostrich Flash Man - Crystal Snail Crash Man - Magna Centipede (sticky bombs) Heat Man - Flame Stag We have Air Man and Morph Moth left, but I'm not sure if they have anything significant in common. Moths... fly in the air, I guess? These parallels seem to stop from X3 onwards, unless I have missed something.

I stumbled upon the whole making dash the R button thing when I was young and have always changed it to R ever since. Every few years I get the urge to replay through the series and I have never forgotten to make dash the R button after all these years

There's no mention of the amazing slowdown at the end of Armored Armadillo destroying the SNES so hard that X enters bullet time and transcends reaction and it feels incredible, but other than that obvious flaw that proves you're a fake fan, the video's real juicy and good! I do have a couple problems with X1 specifically, mostly that the levels have to be designed around NOT having the boots until the Sigma stages, and because of that a lot of them are either really constrained in what they can do at times or are Launch Octopus and it's just like "sure go crazy", but I mean, it's a damn solid game all around. And good and snappy and crunchy!

Great video. love seeing MMX get love in this generation. A few things though. First, you said you can get upgrades in any order. But you can't. You can't get the helmet without the boots to jump to the ledge it's on. You can't get the the XBuster without the helmet. That's why it's impossible to NOT get the dash. It's the only one required for the game but it's also required for the sequence of those two. Can't recall if you can get a he armour with stock abilities or not. I think you can, but I never tried since I ALWAYS start with C. penguin. Here are my two little badass tricks that I love to do. And these aren't anything grand, but fun to do and look really insane. First is on storm eagles stage. When you get the heart on the upper left of the level, do a dash jump off that ledge straight to the right. Don't stop. Have faith. You will land on the tiny moving platform at the last possible second. The way it spawns makes it work every time as long as you are faithful in the jump. Second is in Armoured Armadillo. You showed a shot of dashing from the moving platform. In that very spot, if you sent out a fully charged xShot at the same time as you jump off to the right from the top point of the ride, you will sail through the next few seconds and your shot will trail above you obliterating everything in its path. It looks amazing and feels satisfying. And it definitely will impress anyone spectating. Enjoy . Thanks for the vid.

Awesome video. Just a few things to add or weigh in on... To see Flame Mammoth stage normally. I often do an armor grab run before beating any bosses. This not only gets you in a better stance for the main game. But also let's you just finish the level normally if the arm piece is your last one to get. I also beat the bosses in their stages with buster only. It's more enjoyable because it feels like a real fight. But the gauntlet at the end I'll often use the weapons for. Getting the boots first. One time I actually managed to beat Storm Eagle without the boots. It was ridiculous ly tough. Allegedly it is possible to beat all the bosses without them. But I really doubt that. Because dashing is almost a necessity to beating this game (like any of it). The idea is that they basically wanted you to roam wild until you chose the ice level and got the boots. But anyone who knows about this game just grabs them as the first level to beat. But as you said. This makes the Flame Mammoth level far too easy almost every time you play the game. Day of Sigma. It's been a while sinc ei actually saw it. But nothing I remember retcons the Zero v Sigma event. They just don't talk about it at all. I think the idea is that once that battle happened they just never talked about it and Zero became a Hunter. Eventually also becoming the leader of the Maverick Hunters once Sigma turned bad. And also some of the Mavericks only went bad out of loyalty to Sigma. They didn't go evil per se. They just continued to follow their leader from before. I too didn't realize the sigma in the Maverick logo right away. But it's also supposed to be like a shark symbol too. Some sort of ominous vibe mixed with the sigma for Sigma's name. Every full blown Maverick in the series has this logo. And in X4 the bosses will have one of two logos for their health bar. Either the Repliforce R or the Maverick logo. There are 3 actual Mavericks in that game. Split Mushroom. Cyber Peacock. Magma Dragoon. The rest are Repliforce soldiers that are just fighting for their cause. Also in X3 they have the D for Doppler Force. Except the ones loyal to Sigma which have his logo. X7 has the Red Alert logo for their guys. And so on. It's actually neat to notice those details while playing (in my opinion anyway). That's about it for now. Not through the whole video yet. Just racking up things to say about it and I was about to start forgetting them so I posted a bit now. Lol. Awesome video. Hopefully you do the whole lot. 1 through 8. They REALLY need to make an X9. But sadly I don't think they ever will.

If you don't grab the arm piece in the Flame Mammoth level then Zero gives it to you during the Sigma stage. Probably done because only the pink charge can hurt final Sigma. But also because that arm piece is so infuriating to get sometimes. Lol

I really liked the video overall, great job Tarvould. However, I could not disagree more about the tutorial level being anything but high tier. The first level of Mega Man X is heralded across the industry as the gold standard for how to make a tutorial level. It's taught in game design courses along side SMB 1-1 as amazing tutorial design without hand holding and wordy explanations. But I do understand your personal dislike for playing it because of it missing one of your favorite features. I feel it is an amazing introduction and the ending with Zero and Vile is one of my favorite game intros ever so I stan for this level. Keep up the good work Tarv.

Oh I definitely respect it as a tutorial, 100%. I just hate RE-playing it as a veteran. I completely understand how it's a great playground for a new player. I just don't like slugging through it on a replay.

So, while Velgaurder (Sigma's dog) looks like he might be a reference to Treble, Mega Man X came out about a year and a half before Mega Man 7 (Bass and Treble's first appearance), so it's possible Treble was based on Velgaurder, not the other way around Though with game development being what it is, I wouldn't be too surprised if Velgaurder started off as an early design concept for Treble. Who knows?

Thank you someone else who loves boomer kuwanger music. By far the best song to me in the game. I also love that in maverick hunter X this level was used by kuwanger to test X and if you get to him fast enough his dialogue showing his concern of just how much potential X has and can’t be measured. He knew he was in trouble but went along with his mission anyway.

Day of Sigma was designed for a new timeline starting with Maverick Hunter X. Unfortunately, MHX didn't sell well, so we never got sequels. So, ultimately, DoS isn't canon to the mainline X games on the Legacy Collection.

This is probably the 10th MMX video YT has recommended this week, and the video also recommends changing the dash button to the R or L button. I guess this is better than the default A button, but... why do people just don't double tap to dash? I've been doing it from day one, and it feels like second natural. Granted, I am not a speed runner, so maybe some strats can't be done with double tapping. But for all the rest, how come?

Funny thing: in the Gameboy Color version, Megaman Xtreme, they made Armored Armadillo just a bit nastier. How so? Despite it being his weakness, he's actually *ABLE TO BLOCK THE ELECTRIC SPARK!!* It's a little pointless since he doesn't do the counter nuke he does upon blocking your charged Buster shots, but it'll absosmurfinlutely waste your weapon energy. Like...he doesn't even do that in the PSP remake (Maverick Hunter X)!! As for the soundtrack, I gotta say Flame Mammoth is my favorite one of the stage tunes...with Spark Mandrill, Armored Armadillo, the stage select, and Sigma Fortress 4 rounding out my top five.

I think the collection may have changed the names in the US X5.... The US version had different names based on musicians. I'm guessing it's to their canon names, but back in the day, someone had a little fun with the names.

The only complaint I have with Mega Man X isn’t even X’s fault. It’s what they did with Vile. In the beginning, Vile wasn’t a reploid made for war. X couldn’t beat him because X was made to be a peacekeeper, not a soldier. And, for at the time unknown reasons, this made Vile want to end X. At the time, I thought it was because X was the kind of person who could win any fight, but held himself back because he’s a pacifist. I can see how that kind of mentality could anger a machine made to fight in wars. But…then they turned it into a highschool drama. “Why’s X so cool? I want to be cool. Then Zero will accept my invitation to robo-prom.” It cheapened both the character and the world. But, then again, by the time Vile returned in a way that tried to “characterize” him, Capcom was fully committed in their mission to ruin the Mega Man franchise so they never had to make another Mega Man game again. Retconing the plot developments of the X series, gaslighting and lying to the fans, making them think it was their fault there were no games coming out despite it being one of their best selling franchises, and let’s not forget the absolute shitshow that was the Legends fiasco. When Mighty Number 9 was announced, people were ecstatic. When Mega Man 11 came out, people bought that shit up. Now? Capcom just sits on a franchise that, when someone who cares about making games makes the games, has only made them money. It’s friggen sad the mismanagement this franchise has gone through.
