For me, the Bullet Journal feels a lot like a real world version of the "room of requirement" from Harry Potter. With a flip of a page, it becomes what you need it to be, when you need it. Plan, track, braindump, reflect, think, draw, journal, etc. It grows and develops with you. Great system! Great interview!

Planning and organisation is such an underrated part of self-improvement. There's no point burning up all your fuel before you type your destination into Google Maps haha.... Brian Tracy said it perfectly: 'every minute spent planning saves 10 minutes in execution. This gives you a 1000% return on your time."

One of the most iironic things arising from the "planner community" is that people think bullet journals take too much time. Or need too much accessories with pens, washi, stickers, etc. When literally all it needs is a blank notebook, a pen and a simple list of notations. The "creative bullet journal" is anything, feels like junk journaling to me. Making spreads that look good but are usually not useful-- you can see this when these bullet journalers share their ornate spreads at the end of the year and they are hardly used or written on.
@NinaKatharinaWeber
@NinaKatharinaWeber 8 ай бұрын
Yes! That also put me off. I started over and over again but it was too much work - or it looked too „bare“ compared to these spreads. Then I read Ryder‘s book and realized how minimalist the method originally was. Have used it consistently since.

WOW! Initially when I saw the KZbin video length, I clicked on it thinking ‘I don’t have time to sit down for 1.5 hours to watch this’. BUT I was wrong. Awesome interview. Will watch it again as I didn’t get it all the first time around. I am coming to the realization that my life is quite out of control and too random, and am starting the bujo practice. It seems like things are falling into place only after the first week of living this. I have been watching as many videos of Mr. Carroll’s as I have been able to find, and now have his book on order. Can’t wait to fully grasp and utilize this method! God bless!

I started using the BuJo method in late 2019. One piece at a time. Once I really got the hang of one piece, I was ready to n corporate the next thing. It’s made my life so much better. Since my early 20s, I’d been trying to create a planner type method that would guide me through my days. I wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until my mid 40s. I was so happy and relieved to find the bullet journal method, especially since I hadn’t gotten anywhere with my own attempts at creating a method. I’m so grateful to Ryder Carroll.

As an avid person who always attempted but failed to keep an effective planner/journal, when I was first introduced to the bullet journal method, it blew my 'fixated' mindset. This method breathed and grew together with me. Discovering what layouts worked for me was a refreshing process. I am amazed at how Ryder was able to create a revolutionary movement when journaling was so overdone. This was a long interview that I thoroughly enjoyed listening to from start to end. Just like the bullet journal method itself, it was so simple, right on point, and deep. Thank you for sharing your method with the world!

"values reveal themselves in the choices that we make, and the response we have to the choices that we make. i have a choice how to respond. what's driving that choice, and that choice should be your values" 01:33:39 really liked that. good to write in the bullet journal 'headspace tools' collection.

As an early childhood educator who is quite passionate about bullet journal method and play in early years, this talk made me so happy! The ideas or concepts Mr Ryder shared are the same as to how I, or the play community, believes and views how children and people learn! And I owe my shift in perspective/belief/value (from from a traditional school setting to a play-centered philosophy) all because of bullet journal and play. How I wish all people could also see the value of both bullet journal and play. It truly is life changing and because of them, I found my why (In sir Ken Robinson's term, I found my element). Not because I planned them, but because of the things I learned thru the process and journey. How I've come to learn how my brain works, getting familiar with being 'not perfect' and messy, having mistakes turn into lessons, how we need to reflect and that it's ok to change midway to be more intentional in why we're doing it, having structure but yet open for flexibility... are some of the life lessons I have and still am encountering thru bullet journaling and play. So thank you so much for this talk! This gave me another boost and encouragement as to why play is just as (or might even be more) important than academics!

Ryder’s job hopping is so typical of ADD ! I’m not sure he’ll ever find what fulfills him long term because it’s the search that fulfills him, that dopamine rush when you think of a new project. I ended up being a project manager and getting into bullet journal naturally and got diagnosed years later, I see myself in what he says, I’m a consultant because I couldn’t stay in the same place for too long… I’m even changing my bullet journal like 4 times a year because it gets boring after a while and starting fresh is so good for the brain ! I have an impressive collection of half empty bujos ! 😂

As an Autist with combi ADD/ADHD, and OCD, I love the bullet journal method. However, a blank notebook does not work with me since I do what I call productive procrastination. Where I spend the time making the layout for hours, wasting whole days on it. It is not artistic, just some colored highlighters and a pen. So, I bought a planner from Japan that has monthly, weekly, and daily pages, along with an index already in the book. Now I just use the highlighters and pens on a daily basis. Do my Cal Newport time blocking in the weekly with post it film flags with the task written on them, and move them from week to week. I would use the bullet journal daily log on the daily pages, and any future planning could go in the monthly’s up to march of the next year. If it goes beyond March of the next year, I just put a post it on the inside cover of my planner and move on. So my yearly migration I catch the post it and move it into the new book on the correct month. Given my perfectionistic issues, I have these appointment types also on flags with permanent ink on them and place them on the correct date. That way I am not cancelling things with crossing it out. The weekly logs, like I said I do time blocking, and when the time has gone by, i write in what I actually did in those hours. I also can log my sleep day to day in these time logs. It works great for me since I am spending less time drawing out ‘perfect’ layouts.

Ali's podcast makes me start doing things I've not been inclined to, motivated to, wanted to. There's so much that happens in 1.5hrs. A before and after that shifts how I live everyday. I have a consistency problem all my life. And I started writing everyday without missing a day. It's not something i do anymore, it just became a part of me. Now I guess bullet journaling is going to happen everyday now to keep me and my consistency on track and I'm sure I'm gonna end up feeling super good about it!

The point he stressed about making it a tool with very specific intentions resonated with me a lot. I've seen various threads on social media about bullet journalling. Here’s a thought for Ryder…maybe he should consider doing collaboration courses, take a student/teacher/etc. Come up with bare bone structure they need to do the thing, then have maybe a month long course where the person taking it can check in daily to do the work alongside him with directions (think, turn to your daily page, set it up for today - date etc, turn to your monthly page. Basically all the steps he takes each and every day. My thought is that some of us (myself included) have trouble with “ambiguous” directions and need to either do the work first OR understand the why behind the work before we can actually do the work or else it’s a messy and defeating task. Others just need the accountability that a course could provide, some need to spend money on something to take it seriously, etc. It would be a BIG job, no doubt, especially since there would need to be multiple courses for the various life areas (I imagine that a teacher’s “basic” pages would be different than a student’s, etc), but it would make it make more sense for me, at least!

All high performers (entrepreneurs and management levels used some form of small or even a pocket journal that they would put their daily appointments, schedule, task lists, ideas for the past 60 years. With bullet points, check marks, x’s, arrows and cross throughs. They just didn’t call it a “Bullet” Journal. The women of bullet journaling, since Carrol came out with the bullet journal, have taken it to a whole new level with habit trackers and incorporated so many new cool features. The Bullet Journal was new to this generation. A question you should have asked is where did he see this method used before. He certainly didn’t invent the method, he invented the name.
