*1.18 Mining Q&A* *Q* : Is this info still accurate? *A* : Yes, except Diamonds now spawn about 2x more frequently, copper generates 16 blocks higher and lower and gold generates more below y: -48 than it did, however other than that everything else is the same and the levels that you mine at are the same. *Q* : Does this guide apply for Java and Bedrock Edition? *A* : Yes this guide is for both versions. *Q* : Will this info become outdated? *A* : No, other than the changes listen on the first question this Information should not change (if it does I will pin a comment mentioning it) *Q* : Strip Mining or Caving? *A* : Strip Mining is safer and you get deepslate but its slower and wears out your tools faster, Caving is Faster but is more dangerous and requires large caves at the right y level. *Q* : How do I know if I am on 1.18? *A* : If you can mine below y0 and you have crazy caves then you are on 1.18 .

I honestly dislike the change that makes it so ores do not get as much air exposure. One of the goals of 1.18 is to make players explore caves more and to discourage strip mining, this snapshot is very counterproductive in terms of meeting that goal. What I would like to see Mojang do is start the deep slate layer with low air exposure ores, and as the caves get deeper and more dangerous (i.e. The Deep Dark) the air exposure of ores increases. Thank you so much for making this video, in the meantime this advice will be super helpful!

If you don't like strip mining and prefer caving, I recommend finding an aquifer or a flooded cave. Since water is not air you get the same amount of it spawning if you were strip mining without mining any blocks. I have found good quantities of ores this way. Just don't drown.

A few things to note: - The best way to get copper and iron is actually through giant ore veins. Giant copper veins generate above y=0 and are basically long, winding strips of copper mixed with granite. Giant iron veins generate below y=0 and are the same but mixed with tuff. - If you find a really big cave, it will probably be better than strip mining because the insane number of exposed blocks will counter the reduced air exposure. - The best way to get coal and emeralds is just to mine high up in a mountain biome.

For me, I prefer y = -54 for diamonds and redstone, because that's the new standard level of lava lakes. At y = -57, you'll occasionally dig into the side of a lava lake, which is really annoying. At y = -54, you'll always be above them, so you can easily bridge across any you come across

Something I have found since 1.18 was released has been how many more diamonds you can find in underground aquifers than in the open-air caves. The reduced air exposure has no effect when the ores are not *technically* surrounded by air. Of course, this method isn't all that viable until you have some enchanted armor at least but from my experience it is super lucrative.
@laninthomasma8814

I've found that, too. Now I'm looking in every aquifer I come across. It's good to have a door or two along to mine underwater, if you don't have respiration or aqua affinity.

Good video, thanks for your amazing research! Here's a small 1.18 mining start I came up with (share your ones too, I'm very intrested in it): 0. Get some wood (10 logs will be enough), maybe some food (or else your only food source will be zombies lol) and a few stone pickaxes. 1. Mine to somewhere around The Copper Level (02:36) and find about half a stack of coal. 2. Mine to The Iron Level (04:33) and start strip mining until you found some iron. Be VERY careful when exploring large caves! Get as many iron as you need (in my case, it was 40 -- full armor + 3 pickaxes + sword + shovel + bucket + shield) 3. Mine to The Diamond Level (07:05) and start strip mining until you get 8+ diamonds. Also mine some lapis, 1-2 stacks Craft 2 or more diamond pickaxes and save 2 diamonds for the enchanting table (also mine 4 obsidian for it) 4. Go back to surface (finally!), farm cows and sugar cane (you probably have some bones from caves exploration; if not, just farm some skeletons at night) to craft bookshelves and enchanting table. After getting 7-10 bookshelves try to enchant one diamond pickaxe to Fortune, and all other pickaxes to Efficiensy and Durability (it'll take you a while but it totally worth it) 5. Go back to The Diamond Level and... you know what to do. Use the Fortune diamond pick to mine ores, and all other pickaxes to mine stone and deepslate. Continue until you get as many diamonds as you need 6. PROFIT! I used this technique on 21w43a and gained about a stack of diamonds in 9 hours

Not finding near the diamonds way down below. Given they used to appear in groups of 5 to 8, you could mine rows of 1, skip 3, 1, skip 3. Because they were always at least 2x2 in their appearance of 5 to 8. Now they crop up in smaller amounts I mine 1, skip 2. That combined with the time deepslate takes vs stone. Idk, I want v17 back. Eventually we will adjust. And coal is plentiful, just gotta go and actually searc for coal only on the best coal levels mentioned. It's out there by the stack, especially way up high if you can find tall enough mountains.

I've heard some concerns from some people about the ability to clear out the deepslate quickly. Maybe the Warden could drop something that could be combined with a beacon to produce an improved beacon of some sort that would allow for instant-mining of deepslate (would probably require another layer of beacon, meaning a ton more ore blocks). Or they could add a "Deep Miner" enchantment that's similar to efficiency, but more effective on tougher blocks.

I think those could be really nice additions, needed really!
@EnoEso

I feel like the "Deep Miner" enchantment is better, since the Warden is supposed to be more of a thing you want to avoid rather than fight. you have some pretty good ideas
@scoopi3244
@scoopi3244 2 жыл бұрын
I think the Deep Miner suggestion is better than the beacon change to be honest. If beacons need anything, it's more range. Having to put down 164 of a precious BLOCK for the pyramid, having to get 3 skulls with between a 2.5-5.5% chance depending on Looting from Wither Skeletons, then killing the Wither and it only giving you a radius of 50, it seems a little small in my opinion. By the time you are around killing the Wither, your base alone is normally a lot bigger than that. I know mine have always been. 50 radius blocks sounds like a lot of space, but, it really isn't xD

I feel like you're underestemating the effect of caving in this vid. Sure Diamond's spawn less, but in proper sized caves you can still see so many blocks at the same time. Potions of nightvision are key here! They are quite cheap to make, especially since you're gonna find most materials you'll need while caving. Also a good thing to note is that Diamonds now also spawn diagonally from each other, so even though some might look like just one there might be more hidden behind another block. Anyway, I'd love to see some data on comparing the two, since in my little experience in this update caving seems better.

Coal is really difficult to find to the point I have to travel thousands of blocks in all directions to mountain biomes just to get a decent amount of coal or set up a tree farm to where I can smelt the logs for charcoal until I can set up a lava farm to get infinite fuel. And redstone, man, I never would have thought clerics and witch farms would become a major need to set up as quickly as you can but I've had to do that just to have a significant source of redstone.

Cool video! Apparently going down pass to level 0 doesn’t take to the void. Diamonds are deeper. And level 0 is for lapis which is weird because I found some and I was at level 54 when I was mining. And Iron is now level 14 which surprises me. This update is going to take some getting used to. This video will definitely help me and my friends so thanks bro! I’ll be liking this video 100%

Here you go: Q : Is this info still accurate? A : Yes, except Diamonds now spawn about 2x more frequently, copper generates 16 blocks higher and lower and gold generates more below y: -48 than it did, however other than that everything else is the same and the levels that you mine at are the same

From my personal experimentation, while diamonds spawn more frequently they are spread put 4x father apart. While this makes you more likely to find diamond, you are less likely to find large veins.

Yeah, I have found some crazy large veins in 1.18 but it is annoying how often you find a cluster of like 1-3 diamonds.

My favorite part about the new ore generation is the hunt for deepslate coal ore which is really rare and deepslate emerald ore which is even rarer. Their basically high value collector items and currency on my local server.
@KL53986

One of biggest deals would be lack of coal in "deepslate" (Deepslate being the Y = -1 variant of caves). So it becomes very limited to make torches and in deepslate you cant make more unless you go back up

I kinda like this change as I feel like most of my minecraft days have been spent strip mining and barely coming up for air, it's nice that I have to do a different mining strategy for coal and I mostly will find all the coal I need exploring caves, also have found myself using mega spruce trees that I grow to be great sources of charcoal for torches (and a good bit of exp too)

So now with the first pre-release out what would you recommend, strip mining or cave? With the buff to spawn rates a while back does this also give more exposed ores?
@Eyecraftmc
@Eyecraftmc 2 жыл бұрын
Very Good Question. First, the layers that are the best to strip Mine at apply to caves as well so if you are trying to get a specific ore through a cave you would want the cave to be as close to that number as possible. I would say that if you do not plan to build with deepslate or deepslate bricks then caving is probably a much better option but this only if you have many large deep caves around where you want to mine or elytra to fly from large cave to large cave mining the things you want. Early game you are much much safer from mob spawns and fall damage in a strip mine but its up to you. TLDR: Strip Mine = slower but safer. Cave= Faster but you need a lot of them and they are more dangerous.

I find that in a cave if I find only a single spot of diamond that there is usually more diamond 2-3 blocks away from it, so I will dig out that diamond ore and then dig a circle around it, not sure if its just a coincidence but this has worked a majority of the time that I have tried it when there was only 1 diamond ore in a vein
@Eyecraftmc
@Eyecraftmc 2 жыл бұрын
I think that is a good idea, as I believe there are ore generation shapes that have 2 clusters of diamond separated from each other.

Hi, still an MC noob but I noticed it too, at least when I went down these deeper, negative y levels. I would basically mine the deepslate that touched any ores I found and there were some that just touched diagonally, that you wouldn't see if you just dug that piece of ore and left. Idk maybe that's common MC knowledge but hey, if it helps someone

What you're not taking into consideration is how fast you run through the caves and how good you are at spotting ores and how quickly you retrieve it. I take ladders for the walls and I bounce around smacking torches everywhere. I use the ladders to give it the explorer experience. Someone one day will appreciate it ❤️
