I think that the whole thing about phantom is its risk/reward ratio. With 75 base HP, you're the squishiest thing on the playing field. Cloak will get you out of trouble, but blast and smoke will pull you out of it instantly, as will a tiny bump on the walls. Sure their rage has the highest damage output, but it's fueled by TAKING DAMAGE. As the SQUISHIEST CLASS. It rewards skill, and helps forgive you if you are getting curbstomped, but if you don't have the skills to track your targets, you might only get one kill during that rage. Teamwork with your windguards is also great, so that they can power you up as well, supporting team diversity as well as cooperation.

Yeah great points! I think one of the reasons that Phantom is particularly strong at the higher levels of play is the fact that good players are great at avoiding incoming damage in the first place, so the Mystic Shroud becomes even stronger since it's not used so much as a panic button and it's harder to punish a good Phantom after they've used that power. The main issue I think is that the best counter to Phantom, is another Phantom (or Windguard) with Blast. A bad Phantom is a free kill, but a good one is near impossible to track down. In saying all that, I've been playing a ton of Marauder and having a blast with it too!

I disagree. The class is completely overtuned. Compare it to Marauder. How is it that just because it has 75 HP, it gets invisibility, rage gives it invulnerability and untargetability, plus INCREASED fireball damage AND infinite fireballs! Marauder gets to track all the players, sure, infinite fireballs...that do LESS damage, and dont even track faster, just "better" whatever that means. I'm a salty marauder main who hates how cracked phantom is. Can't wait for the new class.

i dont know. hp barely matters because once your shields are down you are losing gold. and as marauder and windguard most of the time your gold is gone before you die. and then surviving is quite useless anyway. all rages are fueled by taking damage. in a gamemode where you have to carry gold to your base its just insane to give one class a get gold to base free card. (which is basically only countered by the same class). and dont talk about windguard - if you play blast on windguard you are weird and getting a phantom to run into your gas cloud that phantom must be an idiot or you have a super lucky position. i swapped from windguard to phantom and its insane how easy it is to be insanely powerful as phantom. if it were hard okay but its by far the easiest class and the strongest. also the burst you have as phantom with blast is insane. i dont know how often i blasted somebody 5 meters infront of the turn-in, blast kills the shield -> they hit a wall -> one fireball -> dead.

I wish I could @ two people at once, but I think that there's a TON of great points being made here. I will agree that blast windguard is pretty wonky, but there are definitely times (like in Gates of Fire) where it can be useful (especially since there are usually so many windguards in that gamemode, and 3 smoke players is plenty to secure good cover). Phantom using its invisibility to get gold home free is very powerful, but I definitely think that a majority of players that I've seen haven't been doing that. More often I see phantoms run blast and use their cloak offensively to nuke treasure dragons, or as a get-out-of-trouble button. HOWEVER, I have found pretty good success in killing phantoms as marauder. If I can get hunter's mark on them, they'll usually panic and cloak. Sometimes I do lose them, but other times they freak out and bonk into a wall, or fly into smoke, or I can even hit them with firebreath sometimes and knock them out of it, and then they die very fast. I've also been able to stay alive through entire matches (not rounds, but matches) as marauder by utilizing advanced movement in conjunction with gust, and the spoils map in particular has a ton of health powerups and shields all over the place, so if you know what you're doing, you CAN sometimes recover from a near fatality. Marauder is powerful, that's for sure. But it also has a WAY steeper learning curve than any of the other two classes. Phantom is the easiest to get and succeed with. Windgaurd is pretty easy to understand, but takes some skill to use it to great effect. I have ended up on the podium with windguard with zero kills before, which is very interesting to me, and a good windguard can make or break any team. But marauder... marauder's skills are easy enough to understand, but putting them to use is a learning experience, as is actually playing the class. I definitely think it has the highest threat factor, but is absolutely the most advanced class to learn, period. Good marauders are very hard to find, and I've been playing for DAYS and doing a ton of research before finally improving my game. Phantom's rage is absolutely overpowered, but in unranked I barely ever see anyone use it to great effect. And faced by dozens of squirrelly targets, if you pop your rage at a bad time it's very possible to not get any kills if you're smoked out by either or both teams, coupled with poor positioning or just overall chaos. On paper it's insanely powerful, but in practice it rarely ever gets played to its full potential, at least in my personal experience. I feel obligated to say that your results may vary.

Another thing I love doing with blast is predicting where a low health windguard is going, but because of its smoke you can't target it a good blast can easily finish them off

Yeah Blast does 5-20 damage so can often finish off a low HP opponent, but it also clears Windguard smokes so even if it doesn't secure the kill by itself, it might be enough for you to get some flamebreath in!

hi you propably are the man that could help me with this , i'm a solo player (due to autism i'm no talker with strangers so teams aren't my thing) and i'm a quite agressive player (i tend to play carnage cause i can kill people there xD) but now i'm in a dilemma of either ''maining" phantom or marauder , i played phantom in the beta and fell in love with the class but i feel like everybody is playing it

I totally get it! I've got a Marauder video coming out sometime in the coming week that might help you decide. The playstyles are quite different and require a different skillset, but they both have that overlap of being able to be super aggressive in the right circumstances.

Hey I main marauder quite often and I used to main phantom so maybe I can help. FIrstly, don't be worried about what everyone is playing. Enjoy the game the way you want to. Secondly, I've noticed that phantom is great if you're like me and aren't as skilled in pvp games or anything as fast paced, as it allows you a moment to breathe. I personally switched over to marauder with gust for a bit more of a challenge while still having that safety net and it's definitely more difficult, but because of that it feels more rewarding and really encourages me to learn the mechanics of the game. It's also more forgiving when it comes to learning to dodge fireballs, due to the extra chunk of health. I'm not sure how confident you are in your abilities and game knowledge, and I'm by no means an expert, but if you enjoyed and still enjoy phantom then I personally would recommend that. Great thing is that you can always change classes to freshen things up. Good luck!

Crazy. Phantom best passive, best abilities, best rage. Only way to kill phantoms is by using phantom. This game will die every fucking quickly due to 1/3 of the dragons being completely fucking useless

I think this is only a real issue at the very top level of play. A bad phantom is still very much useless, so one of the things I like to do is punish those bad phantom players xD In saying that, the lack of matchmaking makes this an issue for all players so definitely need some adjustments there!

There is no cap to the number of mines you can place at once, however they do only last for 3 minutes each :)

You can have both active at once, but it's better if you stagger them one after another for an extended effect!

Can you illuminate me on which powers/skills come from the dragons and which come from the riders? Also why the riders are using swords if they are never used? Is it because the weapons are the object casting the abilities?

This is a great question! The answer is that I have no idea! My guess is that the "power" comes from the dragon but the "ability" comes from the rider, except for when it doesn't. I don't know, what do you think?

@@DustyNG I think the Rage related abilities come from the dragons. Salvation Surge is the Ironwing wind tunneling towards an ally and bringing air invigorating magic, Shroud fits the Nightsnagger stealthy description and Hunter's Mark fits the Marauder's dragon too. But... Frost Bolts I think comes from the dragons. Also we have that 4th class, which I think every lightning ability comes from the rider. I don't know, I couldn't check the animations up close to be sure. I wish it was the Stonesnout helping the viking guy. Still waiting for your tips on the other two classes!

Smoke is great on windguard, but if you have two smoke windguards on your team already in Gates, it's best to go blast if you know how to use it. Its functionality as both smoke clearer and dragon yeet device makes it a major game changer in that game mode.

New to the game and thus far it is my lest favourite class. It just has too low health and all I seem to be doing is cloaking or if I am out of it dying. I will try and read up on it more but the low health sucks.

If the low health is your issue I recommend focusing on your movement to avoid taking as much damage. Once you've mastered that you'll get to feel the strength behind this class :)
