As always an entertaining video.... not sure how 'portable' having to lug about a bloody great big battery is though 🙂

Tony is stronger than he looks & the LiPo batteries are lighter than you think. 10/10 to him and Henry for recording this in the rain though! 73 de G4HKS

Great video Tony, very brave, in the true spirit of ham radio! I bought the full selection of those AMPRO mobile aerials about 30 years ago and often thought it would be a good idea to double up and try them as base station loaded dipoles. Didn't know they were still around and with a Tee piece for portable operation. Wonder what the cost of the Tee is? 73, Martin GW3XJQ . PS, the price hasn't changed much since I bought them, great value for money.

Tony, thanks for the interesting video. You may well find fitting a choke isolator at the antenna feed point will help with the local QRN. I noticed a big green cabinet behind you which probably houses lots of mains distribution kit - likely the source of the crackles! Thanks and 73, Dave GW3WCV.

FT 710 is a great portable radio, I use one in my campervan with a 22ah battery that lasts a long time. The hamstick type antennas are great, I use a single one on a 7 inch magmount on the bonnet of my van (Plastic Roof) and they work well even on 40m! G8XDD/P

Good demo despite the weather. Maybe better to keep the coax coiled 'over-under' though? It saves the tangling you nearly got caught in. 73 de M0PTB

The hamstick dipole works quite well. Love the Yaesu 710, purchased from your selves at the RSGB rally. What microphone settings do use out of interest?

Do you need two off the ham sticks as looked good on 20Mtrs and good contacts. Nice video and nice that you did it when so cold.
@Martin_LynchАй бұрын
yes two for the same band.

Well done Tony 💯… some info on the battery please… I think it’s a Li-Po battery which are expensive but lighter than any others… also I believe they give consistent amps ? The one you were using would last a couple of days I think ? I’m considering putting two in series in the shack for when the electricity ⚡️ is turned off / fails. Sterling effort for ML&S… I think Martin should put a few more shillings in your wages this week. 😊 73 ✅ 💙 G0 UVL

Oh man I was just thinking of calling to ask about the Messi and Paolini coax as I’m wanting to upgrade for some for hiking and SOTA / POTA options. There’s a few of the “5” sized cables which are obviously the best compromise for HF portable regards weight, but the specs don’t offer a comparable in terms of weight per meter or dB gain over “100m” Also bend radius… Currently using rg174 for portable RG58 on my 12m Spiderbeam mast and rg213 mil c17 for vhf on the roof. But thinking I want better for portable

So where in the name of Marconi is the Sherpa and/or your camel? You know, the ones you use to lug that battery tonnage around and about ?
