To me an RPG is a game that allows you the freedom to complete a mission in a zillion different ways based on the character you're trying to build. For instance, Kingdom Come Deliverance is a perfect example. You can go through the game by avoiding combat except one checkpoint

The whole party-based system was literally derived from Dungeons and Dragons, a western board game. And pretty much every western RPG we know today was inspired by DnD in some capacity.

Honestly the greatest series of games I have ever played, even considering the ending (at first release) was underwhelming. Given the updates they made with dlc and the fact it would be a remaster I would easily play through the trilogy again several times, absolutely some of the best characters of any game ever, period.

From what I played of it the game is enjoyable but sadly it is so damn buggy and unstable. For one I can't even use a bow without the game crashing, half the time quests either break or the textures freak out then the game crashes, every hour or so the game will just crash, and then you have the God awful load times. I kid you not the average load time for me is about 5 to 10 minutes. But looking past those problems it is a good game but id personally say bottom B or top C because the load times and instability

It's a 48 gig update and I have no Wi-Fi I know it's much better after the patches but since I'm unable to get it updated I have to judge it by what I know. I gotta say, DA:2 gets an unfair reputation. Yes it's massively flawed but it's got some great side quests, interesting characters, it totally breaks from the cookie cutter fantasy rpg archetype and goes for a more nuanced story. There's a lot to like if you can overlook the flaws

I am nerding-out with Pathfinder: Kingmaker (by Owlcats Games), BUT players must be warned it is challenging and a bit stressful for me even (I do not want to fail my kingdom building, etc.). ps: I play with pen-and-paper difficulty (damage done and received are flat 1:1 ; except critical hits because they are insane in Pathfinder). - also loved Pillars of eternity, though I understand many players get burnt out early on in the game.

they do different things well. take some different examples and you will face the same issue. how do you compare divinity original sin and diablo 2? both are obviously under the rpg spectrum, and if you do not categorize them further - arpg or crpg then this is what you are going to end up with. admitedly even if you take fallout 4 for what it is - random shit killer, explore-generic-content thing, it is still a mess. not even on the same level of something like odyssey which is 'shadow of war' power fantasy openworld generic content clearing arpg, which at the very least - it does well what it does.

The story missions they did have were so good but they just needed some more of them instead of a lot of the filler side quests. The areas were all even pretty cool to me. Dragon’s Dogma deserves at least an A tier, game's combat, pawn knowledge party system, versatility and replayability makes it not exactly an S tier due to it's weird and hard-to-comprehend story, and the characters are kinda bland, but everything else totally makes up for it. I myself actually understood the story pretty well when I first started playing it 10 years back and I really liked the uniqueness and originality. W Itsuno game

DA2 is so much better imo. I did 2 playthroughs of DAI about 4 years ago and I haven't been able to replay it since simply because I don't want to deal with the annoying fetch quests and the messy writing again. Meanwhile I can replay DAO and DA2 time and time again just fine. Although I will say that DAO is a buggy mess without mods (especially the Awakening DLC) and vanilla DAO definitely hasn't aged well.

I played it for the first time last year, and I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was. Definitely enjoyed my time with it, despite not thinking I was going to. I think it gets a lot more flak than it deserves because of it's launch. New Vegas had a considerably worse launch, but it had some REALLY strong writing holding it up, which mass effect andromeda doesn't have the same degree of help. I think it's a solid game, yet still the unloved step-child of the mass effect series.

I feel like the main issue with dragon age 2 is 1. the devs didn't get enough time, which is how you get problems like their overwhelming reuse of maps and the weird faces, and 2. the rivalry options for most of the characters are actually kind of bad, especially for characters like merrill or fenris where as much as what they're doing isn't the best/healthiest, you can fully see where they're coming from and the rival route ends up feeling kinda abusive. Other than that I would personally put it in S or A tier

Also someone brought up an interesting point on the repetitive maps thing recently, where it's probably not intended, but very funny if taken as canon: The reason why all the areas look the same is that Varric only describes the areas the first time they visit, and after a couple times he's just like "the wounded coast" or "a cave" without putting much detail into it and cassandra just pictures the same location map in her mind.

I'm an ancient gamer so I love all the really old games like the PC versions of Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Planescape, Icewind Dale, etc. I never thought more modern games would ever capture that "magic" again but after a long gaming hiatus I started playing Divinity Original Sins 2 recently (never played the original) and it's one of the best games I've ever played of all time! To me it even eclipses my all time favorite isometric games, it's just so much damn fun! I can't wait until they finish BG3 - I know it's playable now but I'm waiting until it's finished before I sink my teeth in.

I definitely have MHW/Iceborne in the S tier. It made me fall in love with the series after putting in 1500 hours and making new friends. I'd also have Dark Souls in S tier, Dark Souls 2 in A(at least the Scholar edition), Dark Souls 3 in S, Deus Ex HR in A(misses S just for the bosses) and Deus Ex MD in B. Though Fallout 4 is a meh rpg I still really like the game (compared to 76 it's a masterpiece) and with the dlc and mods I'd still have it in A.

I actually preferred 13 Lightning Returns over XIII-2, but I can see how it can be different from person to person. XIII is a great series imo most people that complain about it have either never played it and follow the popular trend they "heard about" to hate on xiii or the people who actually played xiii never got past the first opening mission because the game does open up more later, and I feel part 2 and 3 progressively took what it learned and got better.

I agree with you brother, FF XIII made me shed a tear in the end, and the last game that did it was X. I was afraid of playing XIII because of reviews too, but once I did it became my second favorite FF of all time, and I've played every single one of them. My only problem with Lightning Returns is the "end of the world" vibe which gave me a lot of anxiety cuz of that fucking clock telling me how many time I have left before the game ends, I hated it lol. But XIII-2 has the best chocobo song when you ride a red one, and no one will change my mind about it. XD

Just watched this and thought exactly the same. Outside of sports games, FPS, puzzles games and maybe a few other genres, pretty much every game has some sort of 'RPG' mechanic. This doesn't mean it's an RPG though. In the same way that just because a game has duel-type combat, this doesn't make a it a fighting game like Tekken is. Honestly, I wouldn't consider FromSoftware games like Dark Souls or Bloodborne to be 'RPGs' at all. Fantastic games yes, but they're primarily action / combat focused dungeon crawlers. And Borderlands...is a looter-shooter (it's even listed as an action-based, first-person shooter on the google description of the game). IMO, a key aspect of what dictates whether a game is an RPG or not, is the ability for player choice, branching narrative / quest paths, and varying quest / gameplay outcomes, depending on the player's actions. Any game that lacks this, is not a real RPG, regardless of whether it's open-world, has skill progression trees, or dialogue options.

Also, if you're just playing to enjoy yourself and not to review the game, installing a few mods allows you to get through the repetitiveness and enjoy the actual story better. Specifically I recommend two mods: one that removes the looting animation and a mod that removes the war table mission timers. So much more enjoyable that way.

I don’t Matty has ever played a Piranha Bytes game. In his Gothic Remake video, he said he tried the original Gothic just to compare it to the remake teaser, but never ended up finishing the game. And he didn’t include any of the Gothic or Risen games in his 2000-2010 tier list. For me personally, I’d give Elex a high B, and I haven’t played Risen yet. Although, I played Elex on console, so maybe it’s better on PC. And I only ever played it once. I should replay it after I play the Risen games, which I own but just haven’t gotten to yet. I really hope we get an Elex 2 soon though, the story of Elex was really cool, and if they could just fix the combat I’m sure it would be a top tier RPG.

Fire emblem on switch was one of the best games I've played in a decade. It's the first time in my entire life that I finished the game (and it's not a short game) and then immediately began a second playthrough which I also played all the way to completion. What route did you start with? Played Golden Deer and actually dropped it before finishing my first playthrough. Just felt the characters were too flat (although not as bad as Fates). Awakening and Echoes are the only ones released after 2010 that I have re-played.

His desire for revenge took me through the five stages of grief lol. I also adore Sylvain. He had me laughing throughout the entire game! DA: Inquisition is actually pretty good but suffers from bad early-game design. You should leave the Hinterlands as early as you can, the game doesn't encourage you to do so but it's actually the best way to play the game. The Hinterlands is basically a really big training zone.

Dragons dogma will always be S tier to me just because the gameplay is so fun and I tend to prioritise gameplay the most above other elements in a game. I love how different the classes play and all the abilities you can get with them. Some of the quests were pretty boring, but having an RPG with a great combat system more than made up for it. DA2 story and cast of characters is still way better than Inquisition. About the DLC Jaws of Hakkon is just more of the same eternal filler this game suffers, the Descent is actually really good, and Trespasser is kind of boring, the only real good (very good indeed) part of Trespasser is the ending (which is actually the only reason people go nuts over it). Inquisition is not a bad game at all, but is nothing outstanding either. It is still very inferior compared to Origins, and it's better only in some things than DA2 while inferior in others. Inquisition was very lucky the Witcher 3 appeared later, otherwise it would had been totally overshadowed by it (that said, personally, I prefer Dragon Age, but we cannot deny the Witcher would have destroyed Inquisition for completely if it wouldn't have been delayed).

My 2 favorite games from this list are... 1) Divinity Original Sin 2, that game is a total gem, it has some flaws of course, like the endings, the anticlimactic final boss, and the romances feel kind of am afterthought, but nothing is perfect, and this game virtues totally make it worth it. One of the best games I have ever played recently. I can’t stand DA2. After DA:O which is one of my favourite ever games.. just the ridiculous behind the back staff shooting etc. just found the game and tone and skills and characters dev, and inventory and gameplay awful compared to dA:O. The director resigned during the development due to the studio exec pressure taking the game into a weird action rpg direction.

I think mass effect 3 should have at least been an A. It's popular to hate on, I know. But people tend to focus so much on the ending that they forget the rest of the game's story, writing, and characters.

It's underrated because if you were there on release you'd know it was a shitshow, something equivalent to CP2077 but that being said the combat of the game although complex and hard to get into, is one of the best combat systems I've played in an RPG. Really wish other rpgs get more serious about combat as its always the weakest points of any rpg. Take skyrim for example, non existent combat system

True RPGs are games that allows you to change how the story progresses and how they would end. One factor that would add onto it is creating your own character, but whether or not it was preset or custom, it still needs the factors of progressing and changing your own story to be an actual RPG

With the internet and online gaming journalism, we're now seeing people trying to reconcile all of these contradictory definitions and games into something so vague and diluted that it has no meaning at all. For example the 'RPGfanatic' Carey martell has reduced the definition to simply a 'progression system' because it was the only way he could remain consistent calling Dragon Age and Final Fantasy 13 both 'rpgs'. Almost inevitably any more strict definition would discount one or the other or many other games. Others just use definitions totally inconsistently. They'll call Dark souls an RPG because of it's progression system but not Grand theft auto, Far Cry or Need for Speed.

@@vast634 Gothic is honestly amazing, especially considering it was really the first 3D open world ARPG. And minus the controls in G1, the games have aged very well, imo. There's great aspects and features in the Gothic games which are still missing from flagship Bethesda games, such as actual climbing and vaulting, some form of timing based combat and combos (even if it is tad janky), knocking out NPCs without killing them, and spells which let you morph into powerful monsters or a sneaky maggot thing. I love the free and beautiful atmosphere of something like Skyrim, but the oppressive nature of Gothic is really special (and I would say it does this much better than games with a similar atmosphere like Fallout or KCD). And the ways you can complete some quests or find secrets just by thinking outside the box instead of doing what the game directly tells you is really fun (one of my favorites was a really short one where a digger in the Old Mine in G1 wants you to lure a guard away from a chest of ore).

@@tevildo9383 I wish they would make a proper Remake (not the one currently seen as Demo, wich is lame). One that basically just upgrades the graphics, detail, ui and controls. But keeps the rest of the game the same. Maybe adding some extra areas to make a gameworld a bit bigger. The English version could probably use a new voiceover. The German and Polish voices can be kept the same.

@@vast634 I haven't tried the remake demo yet (I watched a little bit of a gameplay video), so I can't really speak on it. It's hard to say what I would personally do if I were remaking it. Aside from the obvious graphics enhancements: definitely better controls (maybe more in line with G2), maybe new voiceovers though I would feel slightly conflicted with that (it's kinda like cheesy dialogue in the original Star Wars trilogy, would you really change it if you could?), stability fixes of course, dlc/ new areas would be cool but PB would have to do it. Maybe add some hints to Raven's backup plan if the barrier falls (I'm not sure how you would deal with the fact that him and several other NotR characters are killable in the 1st game), make "The Stranger" quest more interesting, perhaps add more interaction/side quests with Diego, Gorn, Lester, and Milten (they felt a little underused, imo). As for gameplay, it's really hard to say what I would change. Definitely add sprint to shorten some of the walking time since there's no conventional fast travel. I like the idea of the timing and combos with different directions, but I feel it could be done better. I don't understand the point of having 3 directional attack buttons if the combat isn't actually directional like some modern games (Mordhau, KCD, M&B, etc.). So either ditch the directions and go with a more soulslike combat to keep the difficulty factor, or go all-in on directions (which is what I think they did for the remake). Personally, I think more Soulslike combat would fit Gothic better than what I saw in the remake video I watched (which just looked a cheap For Honor knock-off, rather than anything original or intuitive), though, once again, I haven't actually played the demo myself yet. As for difficulty, that's hard to say as well. Gothic is based a lot around levels and equipment, more so than actual skill which has pros and cons (I felt this was even further exaggerated by the damage calculation changes in G2 which would be my biggest complaint with that game). It does a good job of making you feel like your character is getting stronger (and it's relatively realistic, having good armour actually matters a lot), but it does a horrible job of making you feel like you're actually getting better at the game (something which FromSoftware style games do very well, and it's for that reason that Sekiro has my favourite combat of game I've played). So personally I would prefer a more Soulslike Gothic, though that could possibly remove the actual necessity for good equipment (as evidenced by Dark Souls SL1 runs), but for most players that wouldn't be a problem; unless you're a Dark Souls master you still need a good weapon and/or spells, armour matters much less though.

I haven't put anything into tiers but I've formed a reasonably comprehensive awareness of games from especially 1995 until 2020. By no definition I'm aware of would Gothic be the first 3D, open world, action, role playing game. You're definitely looking back into the 90s for that, how far back in the 90s depends on definitions. I think Gothic has aged terribly and I wouldn't say the elements you've outlined are 'missing from The elder scrolls' any more than the Gothic series was missing countless elements from the games that preceded them. You're even wrong about some of these elements like the ability to 'knock out' NPCs. The Elder scrolls games are an evolution of the traditional first person dungeon crawlers. I don't think KCD was attempting a 'Gothic like oppressive atmopshere' and I think KCD does most of the things it attempts much better than Gothic.

I agree with most of these... I’ve played Dragon Age Inquisition a few times and here are my two cents for you, Matty: 1. Get the heck out of the Hinterlands ASAP. Seriously. Don’t get caught up in there. 2. Now that you have played it once you have an idea about which quests/areas you can skip without impacting the story. Or which companion(s) you don’t care about (for example I don’t bother recruiting Iron Bull anymore, never use him in the party). Just prune that out. Maybe go some places you didn’t before instead. 3. Whichever side you picked last time (mage v Templar), pick the other one.

They spend a lot of time on the idea of making it co-op and then scrapped it very late in development. Hence all the base building etc. So the dialog and questing system wasn't nearly as fleshed out however the gameplay is very well done and it's not at all boring

Fallout 4 is more action than RPG, honestly. A lot of the time, you're just fighting stuff and the extent of endings goes down to factions having similar endings, barring the Institute. Vanilla, it isn't very fun as an RPG. Also, a huge nitpick I have it that you can't have Dogmeat and a companion at the same time without mods so that also brings it down for me.

Dragon's dogma should at least be A tier. It's S tier for me personally it's combat system was way ahead of it's time (and definitely better than kingdom of amalur so it's weird that you would put it above dd). You should definitely do a rereview of it with the dark arisen dlc

Sorry to necro your thread, but I was thinking the same thing after seeing this tier list. I'm bewildered how KoA can be a whole tier above Dragon's Dogma, this is said as someone who loves both games. My heart wants Dragon's Dogma in S, but my brain has it in A. EDIT: You're right when you say the combat was ahead of its time. Notice how Matty says it's like "Open-world RPG meets Monster Hunter" and then he says he doesn't know how to describe it? It's because DD is the only RPG with combat like it, people use Dark Souls as a comparison as well, but it just does its own thing and does it incredibly well. So happy we're getting Dragon's Dogma 2!!!

I'm 18 hours into Disco Elysium right now. I'm trying to decide if I should stop out of sheer boredom. There's just enough enlightening or humorous moments to keep me going, but otherwise it's way too pretentious and the RPG system gives too little feedback in terms of progress. You just never feel like you are improving or gaining power in any meaningful way.
