The Ultimate Sleeper? 2017 Porsche Panamera 4S Review

The Panamera has always been one of those "Marmite" cars - you either love it or hate it. And even though its prowess as a super saloon has never been in doubt, it remains the brand's least popular model.
For the 2017 model year, the Panamera received a significant facelift, both to the exterior and interior. The aim was to make it look more like the iconic 911, albeit with four seats and four doors, which of course has its limitations.
In this video, shot in Johannesburg, South Africa - far away from our usual locales - we take a detailed look at the changes made to the model. Our Joburg guy, Francisco, also gives the brutal launch control a whirl and gets to grips with the mighty new 2.9-litre V6 motor.

I love this channel and all its videos, but no, this is not a sleeper. In SA everyone looks at a Panamera when it drives by. A sleeper is a car no one would notice or look at twice. This car has too much presence to be a sleeper.

Not a car expert nor am I an English expert but I would think that they use the term "sleeper" in the sense of its speed & not its looks. If one were to see a Golf GTi, Alfa 4C, Audi TTS, Mustang 5,0 & the Panamera lined up for a drag race I'm sure most wouldn't put their money behind the 4S but according to Car Magazine the 4S beats all those cars to 100km/h. Just my take.

Kwezi Beshe of course next to those exotics you wouldn't think of it as extraordinary. I'm talking about on the public road where it mixes with Polos, Golfs, Hiluxs, Fortuners etc. In that case it stands out. Something like an Audi S8 is a great example of a sleeper. It doesn't have a loud exhaust, nor does it stand out in terms of looks, the A8, A6, A4 and A3 sedan can only be separated if you look closely or if you know your cars, yet it is ridiculously fast. That's a true sleeper. Maybe in Monaco the Panamera has as much presence as air, but in SA they always get looks from people who think "wow, a Porsche, that thing must fast". Hope that cleared things up for you👍

sucksqueezebangblow Thanks for the reply but I think you've missed my point. My view is it's a sleeper in terms of performance not looks. I agree with you it stands out & gets looks but one would not expect it to smoke some of the cars I mentioned. People buy GTis, 4C's, TTS's & Mustangs for performance but even those cars are fed dust by a car that can sit 4 comfortably & eat up 100s of kilometers. It wasn't built purely for speed but it can hold its own against purpose built machines.

Just picked up a 2018 Panamara 4S to replace our Tesla P85D. Best thing we ever did.. its an amazing car that you DONT want to drive itself. The experience of manually controlling the machine is what makes it better then the Tesla. It's built so much better and feels what a car this price should feel like.

No, Francisco has done a couple of reviews for this channel. Ciro is just the main reviewer. I like them both, though. Ciro is a bit funnier and Francisco is more like a serious reviewer (not that Ciro isn't serious)

This guy is obviously doing this for the first time or is new to serious video reviews. every word is perfect, very incisive. I don't even like Porche and yet after watching this. I find this car very attractive. His delivery will get better with time. Ciro is the funny laid back guy everyone likes. Francisco is a little bit more serious. Nice review. Can we all just stop quoting or using claimed fuel consumption figures? They are about as realistic and valuable as a proposed resale value. What was the actual consumption during the test? I know people who buy this car in particular won't mind or care, but generally, use real world figures and we'd all have a better understanding of a realistic scenario.

Great attempted review dude, but besides the bad delivery, who the hell wrote your script? The Panamera is not in the LIMOUSINE segment! Take a second and consider the way the boot opens, like a hatchback (with the fifth door)? Has it ever occurred that it might be in a segment with the Audi A7? Or maybe the upcoming BMW 6 Series GT?
