In this week's video, we are ranking every single TIE fighter I could find from Canon and Legends! From the famous to the obscure, I have them all. And you're not going to like where I put them!

I ranked many of them very low on the list, but you do have to respect them for how odd and creative the things they came up with back then were!

YES! Older factions need to have unique design ques from the established ones. Stormtrooper-like armour stems from clone armour modelled on mando armour on Kamino. Triangular ships must remain late Republic and Empire. Any new "High Republic" ships must be distinct (acclimators permissible if they connect them to the dark side somehow in the show.)

I oddly like the TIE Interdictor. It feels like a logical step up from the TIE Bomber. It just seems like someone looked at the Bomber and thought, "What if it could cause MORE destruction?" The thing looks like it could single handedly take down large vessels.

Great video and list, RFC. My favorite Ties are the Striker and Interceptor. Thank you for including the Tie Heavy bomber from Galactic Battlegrounds. (I love that RTS game, classic)

MORE LONG VIDEOS PUHLEEEEASE!! (Great work btw, although the utilization of an advanced Ai skin to an astromech droid in the gun pod of the Brute and the ability for it to spin full 360 degrees and provide rear cover fire think adds a bit more pizazz to that one)

That would be a great modification to the Brute! I’d love to do longer videos more often, but it seems like most of my video ideas just end up short! Like my bike video last week; I listed 7 bikes instead of 5 like I usually do and thought for sure it would end up in the 12-15 minute range, but I think it was barely 9!

The best Tie Fighter 3.75 Vehicle toy “ 2018 “ to me was the produced for the Star Wars Solo film 🎞️ Like, the perfect tie fighter dimensions to the films 🎥 I would have loved that back in 1977 - 1980 - 1983 Original one always looked weird to me, finally got it right 😂

The TIE/FC is actually based on real aircraft, namely those with Target Designator Pods (A-6 Intruders during the Gulf War would be a good example), in real life the F-14 Tomcat *could* Drop Laser Guided Munitions, but required external target designating. Nice to see more modern aerial combat be included.

An acceptable tie tier list. I’ll put it in A tier for the excellence of presentation and concise consistency, not going all th way to S tier because it didn’t have all of the ties that I remember

I actually saw a really cool model of it by Fractalsponge after making the video that fixed the problems I had with it looking flimsy, so I can see why you would like this one! I also made a few changes to the tierlist in a community post, and I’m pretty sure the Hunter got bumped up a tier, but I can’t remember for sure.

Dude… the TIE Defender deserves no less than S tier. Have you ever played X-wing vs TIE Fighter? That fighter was hands down the best in the game.

I had it at S tier when I originally made the list a few months ago, but when I came back to it to finally make the video I just wasn’t as impressed with it anymore. I probably should have just left it there, though. There are a few that I think I should have changed. Trade the Defender for the TIE/sf, trade the Bizarro for the First Order bomber, and add the Avenger at S.

@@RadioFreeCoruscant oh yeah, I actually totally forgot about the avenger as well! The one memory I have of those old TIE vs X-wing games was how the Defender would allow you to equip an auxiliary piece of equipment like a tractor beam, then in combat switch power recharge around so that there’s none slotted to the auxiliary and it gives you extra for shields and lasers. Good god was that thing OP as hell with that setup. Lol

I generally had more success with the Interceptor than the Defender in X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. I don't know what it was. The shields seemed to be offset by the fact that I got hit way more often, and I had a much easier time with the Interceptor staying on target in a dogfight. On paper the Defender was much better, and it was still the second best Imperial ship for me, but I personally don't think it was the best.

Love the casual nonchalance XD There's so many TIE variants there'll never be room for them all, but no shout out to Jason Battersby, a designer at Audi @ 2017? No comments about the Germans collaborating with the Galactic Empire please, but maybe his design might cause low key thrills? Wasn't the nickname for the TIE Predator the 'Squint' in the book? Author trying too hard? Disney owns all the IP and copyright so if they want to steal EC Henry's designs they will, and be less than honest and sadly there's precedent. If you think Henry got rough treatment you should see what Fractalsponge has had to endure. The trailer for one of the Force Unleashed games where Starkiller pulls the Star Destroyer out of the sky was his CG model, uncredited + unpaid, but the artist contracted for the work, certainly was. AFAIK he received an apology from the producer and the in-game model was changed. Then there was the MMO which may or may not have used his Bellator model. There were comics new and old and so much more. Clearly I'm naive but, how hard can it be to ask a creator if they'd like to feature in your project and pay them for the work and give them a line in the credits? Then move on to the next task leaving happy feelings all round? Very very very hard it seems. Such a wasted PR opportunity.

I didn’t want to rank fan-made TIEs (and hadn’t seen Jason’s before now anyway), but I would give his TIE/x a very high score, probably A tier. I only brought up E.C. Henry’s TIE to illustrate why I couldn’t give the Dagger a high score. I don’t think it was actually copied from him (though I would have to rewatch his video on the subject to remind me what his conclusion was), but the fact that it was similar enough to make people think so is certainly suspect. Not as bad as the comic artists tracing Fractalsponge’s star destroyers all the time though, that’s for sure.

The TIE/D Automated Starfighter is one of my favorite ships for some reason, even if it’s not the best. It’s slightly better armored and faster than a traditional TIE. The wings could pivot so it was apparently slightly better in atmosphere but I’m not exactly how sure I am of it. They seemed about average I guess. But they swarmed out of World Devastators and didn’t need a crew to pilot. Only really good in swarms. I definitely wouldn’t unsubscribe over the Defender being put so low… maybe. The M1 could have been better if the turbolaster was mounted under it instead of on the side so it could have two wings. Honestly the TIE Experimentals were definitely just concept art put into production because the Arc Hammer design team were bored or something. I like them despite how bad they are- They are ones your enemy would ignore because of how bad they are, but if you ignore a weapon in a space battle they could prove useful. But honestly I think the Century Tank could have been good if it had a turret mounted to the back on a raised platform instead of chin mounted ones it would have had far better aiming and destructive potential. I heckin love the TIE Reaper and the TIE Striker. Heckin yes. The TIE Bomber and variants are decent… but all are TERRIBLE because none have shielding and are definitely something you wouldn’t survive long in. The Old Republic was definitely too close to the Clone Wars and I’d blame bad corporate decisions. Maybe they didn’t know how far back it was or they simply weren’t allowed to stray too far by the big wigs is hard to say. But yeah not liking the Old Republic era at all is definitely almost worth an unsubscribe over the Defender… heck. But I just got here so I’ll stay.

The Reaper maintains several familiar TIE design elements, though, like the round hatch at the back of it and wings similar to a TIE Interceptor. The Echelon looks like they slapped solar panels on a different ship and called it a TIE.

awwwww, Raptor is my favorite after Interceptor. Its such as Zjinn thing. cheap, disposable, but ultimately, better than what it replaced (the TIE/LN).

The tier list could easily be explained by the TIEs main inspiration: Russian/Soviet Fighter Aircraft S-Tier: Su-27 (Pre-Russian Federation) A-Tier: MiG-29 B-Tier: MiG-21Bis C-Tier: MiG-17F D-Tier: MiG-23 E-Tier: MiG-27 F-Tier: Su-15 Flagon (it's only A2A kill is a Civilian Airliner)

I’d probably give that A tier. It combines the most interesting design elements of the TIE Defender, TIE Phantom, and Scimitar while including enough new elements to avoid looking like it was copied from any of those. It’s one of the best fanon TIEs I’ve seen, though I haven’t seen that many I guess.

Oh no, I knew I was going to miss one! I would have put it at A or possibly even S tier, since it combines all the coolest parts of the Interceptor and Advanced. I’m so annoyed that I forgot one of the best Legends TIEs!

Good choice! I think many of us have a TIE Interceptor fetish XD Interesting that Disney went back to the 'old' TIE model for their movies rather than use a variant of the Interceptor which afaik was meant to be the replacement for the standard model, or you know, do something fresh? Credit to Fractalsponge ruling the internet with his interpretation of the Avenger dominating Google search and rightly so!

I did not know that TIE fighters had solar panels. That is one of those ideas that become more and more stupid the more you think about it. What if you need to operate in deep space or even too far away from a sun? What if you have to fight on the night side of a planet? What if you have to turn away, so that the sun doesn't shine on your solar panels? To make it even worse, the panels are massive targets and hinder visibility. And what about the different variants with smaller wings? Are they some kind of hybrids? Do they just have massively more efficient solar panels? Do they need constant solar power to fly? Then they could only function within a certain distance of a sun (there'd be insufficient solar radiation otherwise) and have to constantly fly perpendicular to the sun. Do they have enough on board power to complete a normal mission? Then the solar panels are completely pointless and expensive additions. Anyway nice video. I get your frustration about the lack of originality for much of Star Wars content. It sometimes seems like the authors, produces, etc. think that Star Wars popularity is tied to specific ships or something and they just regurgitate old stuff instead of coming up with something new. I remember a lot of those from Empire at War. Tie Crawler was weird, but very useful for running over infantry. I still only used AT-ATs for ground assaults.

I could see it working considering they don't have FTL. The majority will fight near planets. I know that Star Wars science is not the same as real science and I don't know all the lore reasons it's less stupid. I could see them working along the lines of extra fuel/energy when available but not required.

The funny thing is, TIE fighters also have a reactor on board as well (which is the protrusion on the back of the cockpit ball), so I don’t know why they have solar panels in the first place.

The TIE fighter is already designed to be as cheap and easy to mass-produce as possible. If they don’t want student pilots flying those, they should just use a flight simulator.

@@RadioFreeCoruscant I could see them stripping out targeting computers, weapons and possibly including a second seat. I think most militaries that can afford it have training aircraft do so. Also, most things in the military are designed to be as cheap and easy to mass-produce as possible plus graft.

Somehow I managed to forget the best Legends TIE fighter, but it is in S tier! If you click the link in the description or pinned comment, you can see an updated tierlist that includes it, and adjusts the position of a few I changed my mind on!

20:05 Hold on a minute, that simply isn't true. The Old Republic era uses similar *design philosophies* as the films, but overall it looks completely different to the films. I mean, simply playing the games shows how different things really look.
