17:50 That's what I have designed for my water filter setup in my unfinished trailer build. I'm going to have a one or two stage filter going to the sink and shower (because some water sources just smell bad) then after that any drinking water will go through an additional filter pitcher.

in australia you have to access cooking gas through an external hatch. I’d go with electric and maybe have a little camping gas stove for the occasional barbecue.

I also didn't want a large propane tank, but loved the idea of an oven, so I bought a Camp Chef Deluxe Oven as an option to have an oven sometimes, and not have it permanently installed with a large propane tank. I'm just planning on a place in my garage to store it, and can take in my jeep for weekends too. Maybe an idea for you?

Really helpful video, but I do disagree with two points. 1. When Ladi said that taking all of the time to find something in a top loading fridge let’s all of the cool air out anyway, that isn’t true. Cold air ALWAYS drops and warm air ALWAYS rises. That’s why refrigerated sections in food store remain open on top. It doesn’t matter how long a top loading fridge is open. 2. Using a Brita doesn’t remove nearly as many contaminants as multi faceted water filtration system. Bacteria isn’t the only bad thing in water. There can be toxins, or even water with high chlorine or high mercury can be problematic. We need to read the full list of everything our solution filters to understand what which contaminants are removed and which may stay behind.

Oh those are some great points! Thanks for bringing it up! You're right... I guess I didn't account for the "clear drop/rise" of cold/heat, but true, there are lots of grocery stores where things are open. And true, Brita is not the holy grail, but as we make sure to only get potable water and don't take risks there, that's usually all we need. I guess some states have worse water than others. Definitely good to double check something like that!

my van doesnt have a kitchen at all lol. built just for me though - i do not cook. period. i 'can' but i hate it. i couldn't tell u if the stove/oven even work at my house and there's only condiments in the fridge lol.

So the good news is the knives don’t fly off of the magnetic strip and stab you in the back unless you have a front end collision so hopefully you’re already dead from the front and collision before the knife stabs you in the back or neck or head. Strange you didn’t talk about the fires started by lithium ion batteries but instead spread the myth about propane tanks being dangerous I guess you’ve never seen an RV with them on the outside either

Second comment if I may…All propane or butane canisters or containers LEAK! There is always a loss/ leak…so again take your own risks, if u remember to turn off your gas every time, then all good.

I worked in refrigeration for about 20+ years….a normal Domestic fridge will shake itself to destruction..they are not designed to “ go down the road”…. They will bounce the compressor off it’s mounts, the copper tubing will rub and u will get a huge lungful of refrigerant in your van eventually….not good. I have a Dometic CRX 110, it is very quiet, the unit ( refrigeration) is very minimal and well designed, short runs of tubing to condenser etc, when I saw it, I knew this would be a great fridge for a van. However cost is a factor…but a fridge can be a total essential to some guys…. I recommend a Dometic fridge on internal design, outer design, but expensive… Take your choice! If u can’t afford a bigger Dometic, buy a size you can afford. The CRX 50 is very popular I hear in the UK

19:05 Ovens ? Yeah great, I had a small sailing ship galley oven/stove combo (from which the 2 burner hob had failed which I removed before installation in the van) For a while I used the oven as is on propane (which I carried just for the oven since my stove runs on ethanol) and after that failed I removed the gas sheit and converted it to ethanol as well. That worked swimmingly for about 6 months but I found myself not using it that much and eventually I decided to remove the oven and replace it with a drawer in which I installed a home made heat retention cooker (which in my case is a Wonderoven - search for it on KZbin on what it is and how you can make one too) Just around the time I decided to remove the converted oven I learned about the Omnia stove top oven which has a cult following and is worshipped quite religiously. I like the idea and started looking for one on the second hand marketplaces. I found one of a Spanish brand called IBILI which is a slightly larger version of the Omnia. I have been using that thingy for about 6 weeks now and let me tell you, the cult and religious following the stove top oven pans have are justified... These things are simply awesome and a near perfect replacement for regular gas or ethanol burning oven. You can do just about any dish you can do in an oven though it requires a bit of a rethink, but any galley chef worth his/her salt should be able to figure it out. Look into the Omnia, IBILI, Versilia or other brands of the Stovetop Oven Pan if you are missing an oven and actually want an oven function in the van but hate to sacrifice the galley real estate and/or the money to get one...

Great group of questions. Further beyond knowing if / how you cook, then find equipment solutions that meet your desired balance of functionality, weight, and longevity. If budget is a concern and you are setting up your van for just one big trip or a few little trips, then lightweight kitchenware means less fuel. However, if you plan on this as a lifestyle and would rather gear lasts than hardy stainless steel would win over cheaper plastics. Take containers for instance: Joseph Joseph nesting with snap lids would probably be easier to clean & last longer than collapsible silicone containers. We’ve had our stainless steel camp dishes for several decades. They are not light but will outlast a few generations - and are dishwasher friendly. Get all your kitchen gear and plan your kitchen design from the inside out. I laugh when I see cupboards filled to the brim in a van but the top half of the utensil drawer is empty space. Small space storage should be designed for the gear - shallow, one item deep; no corners using vertical wall space. And more hooks.

If vanlifers thought about using a one bin kitchen or a tiny camp Chuck box first, they would design van kitchens very differently. Use what you have/ only what you need first - you’ll find you need a lot less in reality. The more you pack, the more you have to clean with limited water resources. The less time spent cleaning/organizing, the more time outside.

20:40 Propane is heavier than air. Propane is flammable when mixed with oxygen. All fixtures and valves and seals can leak, and eventually will leak. So store all propane bottles in a sealed locker with a floor vent, and well away from sparks, wiring and extreme solar and engine/catalytic combustor heat. There are no exceptions for 1 pound bombs,I mean bottles. Same for little butane stoves.

Faucets...yes, you can get what you want.... but those industrial looking ones with the springs don't reach as far and are not as flexible as the pull out ones that have been around forever. I don't know why anyone buys those even though they look cool. Although, no one seems to admit to hating them as much as I do.

@@lisasomewhere88 They are very very common. The hose is hidden inside the faucet and you can pull the faucet off it's shaft for more flexibility. Then, the hose just feeds back into the shaft when you replace the head. The industrial trend became popular in the early 2000's but it really is not as functional in the home as they don't have the reach and flexibility and usually the spray is too strong and so spatters everywhere.

I got the UK made (or so they say) Whale Galley Gusher which is great, pump nice amounts of water, takes very little effort to use and it can pump air as well which is very handy if I need to clear the water out of the lines in preparation of a frost period.

20:50 Storing gas bottles just casually in a drawer or someplace under the sink is.... well .... what do you think ? After I did away with the gas oven I removed all the gas lines, the 5 L gas bottle and locker and never looked back... Gas is fine and dandy but under a curtain set of very ill fated (but not uncommon) circumstances very dangerous... I did not want to roll that particular dice anymore and got rid of gas quite happily...

@@lisasomewhere88 There are induction cooktops (usually sold as single plate versions, sometimes the same brand has a double plat version too) which let you set a max. power consumption or even a temperature which you want the pot/pan to get up to.. that could save very much power since most cooking scenarios simply do not need that crazy amount of heat. Also if you employ a hay box (heat retention cooker like the DIY Wonderoven - look for it on KZbin) in conjunction with the induction cooktop you can even stew not so tender meat cuts with very little electricity use.

Thank you for this excellent discussion & comparison of options! For cooking, I have now decided on a spirit stove (runs on bio-ethanol) which is a liquid fuel & safer than gas, so no need to worry about gas lines. I have not used it yet, but apparently it cooks a lot slower than gas, which can be an advantage if you do a lot of cooking on low heat (eg eggs, fish, simmering) but a disadvantage if you want a hot, fast flame. I do also have a small portable camp gas burner which is great for heating water for coffee - but that might end up being a bit tiresome for some people.

Hi Lisa, I'm not sure you're aware of this (or maybe you are). But you're using other people's content to make money, including mine as I'm in this video. I was also in another one of yours I watched the other day. I'm not going to report it but it's only a matter of time before one of the others you've shown will. Please keep that in mind. As you know we all put in a lot of work to make content and then for someone else to use that content to profit from it is really upsetting. I really like what you're doing and how you're showing people different options. My advice here would be to take off monetization so you can keep the videos/series going.
