I'm going to be trying the Trader Joe's one. I make my own stuffing, because we love stuffing (espeically my mom's recipe), plus I often find the stuffing in these products underwhelming. I also make my own gravy for the same reason, plus it's not enough for us to use if we want more.

Tofurky has at least 3 holiday roasts (4 if you include the ham). The one you made is just the roast, but they have the roast plus a pint of gravy, as well as the roast, plus a pint of gravy, plus brownies (they call that the Feast). They also sell the gravy by itself for @$5/pint. My students usually like the Tofurky gravy best of all the ones you made. Gardein used to private label their roast for Trader Joe's.

I actually dislike the Tofurkey gravy and always make my own (mushroom miso with some of the “drippings” of the basting liquid). My main recommendation with all of the vegan gravies is to skip or be prepared to add a bunch of sautéed mushrooms and nutritional yeast to boost the flavor. Also, I like to roast a bunch of veggies with the Tofurkey in the basting liquid.

I've been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, and I LOVE Tofurkey! I look forward to it every year! ❤ I don't give a sh*t what anyone says. The way people take it as a personal attack when you decline eating meat is the weirdest thing to me
@TheGreatDetectiveKnows2 ай бұрын
Is it weird though? By refusing to eat the meat you are indirectly saying there is something unethical about their actions, otherwise you would just eat it. I mean, I agree with you, but let’s not act like they are reacting in an unreasonable manner.. your presence and rejection is a direct reminder on their lifestyle. They’re forced to introspect. Sometimes that leads to a change in their habits around you. [your friend will pick the vegan option when you come over] or it leads to this passive aggressive deep resentment and insecurity you're experiencing.
@kaymitchell61432 ай бұрын
@ The original commenter said they’re vegetarian. Which I would assume as a fellow vegetarian means they still include dairy and possibly eggs. Some of us are plantbased for health reasons and not to make this huge ethical statement. Assuming every person who eats a meatless diet is a member of their local PETA chapter is rude as well.
@TheGreatDetectiveKnows2 ай бұрын
@@kaymitchell6143 I guess it's theoretically possible someone isn't having meat for health reasons but I don't think that's very likely, and I don't think that's the assumption meat-eaters make. I mean, there's a difference between processed meat, and proper 'meat' - it is possible to have meat in a healthy way, so why even label yourself as a vegetarian if there isn't some kind of moral foundation? You have no real problem with consuming meat then, as long as it is healthy. A lot of the time it is better than processed mock-meats. If the studies tomorrow told you it's healthier you would eat meat. Just say you are health conscious; you will avoid the cons and connotations of being associated with vegetarianism, and it is an accurate label. Problem solved. My /guess/ is that when the original commenter rejects the meat dish, they do not cite a health concern. But even if he did, eating a candy and your guest rejecting the offer, makes the person consuming the candy feel guilty, even within a health-parameter. Nobody likes to look like a fatty or whatever - there's this subconscious inferiority.
@kaymitchell61432 ай бұрын
@ Maybe its not health reasons. Maybe I just don’t like meat. Therefore I chose a vegetarian diet. Also, consuming processed “meat” one meal a year does not denote the health of that person through the rest of the year. I can personally say I do not eat things like beyond meat on a regular. Becoming vegetarian made me actually diversify my diet. I had no choice but to get creative and when I first stopped eating meat there were no fast food options. I made a personal choice. If my personal choice makes you as a person feel subconscious because you assume something then thats a you problem. And it would be best to ask questions instead of assuming and hurting your own feelings. Not everyone is the vegan teacher. Most vegetarians/vegans I know are pretty chill and acknowledge that no matter the reason it’s a personal choice. Not everyone is like the people who go viral for being rude about it on the internet.

You probably already got an answer to this but I'm gonna say it anyway. The reason the first gravy was like applesauce was because it was frozen and "broke" when it was reheated. It's common for a starch based sauce specially if it doesn't have a stabilizer like guar gum added. If it was separate from the roast it could easily be reincorporated by whisking it up. This was entertaining, thank you

my biggest problem with all these reafy made roasts is that they are so SMALL, you can't feed a thanksgiving crowd with just one, or even two, and then forget about leftovers - which is a tradition for thanksgiving, leftovers is one of the greatest things about the holiday. and the weekend/week that follows.
@miso_sleepy2 ай бұрын
As a non-vegan, I honestly saw the Tofurky as the one I'm most tempted to try! It has a decent amount of the "meat" to stuffing ratio and the texture was the most appealing to me. The ones that look like they're logs of bread or stuffing like the Field Roast and Trader Joe's options were the least appealing based on aesthetics. If I saw those at Thanksgiving, I would try them if someone told me it was good, but I would gravitate to other options before those. I might need to buy one of these and give it try this holiday! It's also pretty cost effective if I ever need to make a Holiday meal for 1 or 2 since it's way cheaper than buying a turkey breast where I am.

I love the cranberry roast, it doesn’t weird me out the way some fake meat roasts do 😂. I’m trying out seitan recipes to make my own more savory roast this year. Loved the video!

You bought Tofurky w/o gravy. They sell TWO with it, lol❤. Also, it’s absurdly easy to make gravy. Lastly, cranberry sauce exists😂 Tofurky rules my heart. (Can be made in a slow cooker & an air fryer. We love versatility!)

❗️Trick Allert❗️I’ve tried them all. And I’ve got a trick for everyone, slice your roast then pan fry them and reassemble them on the platter if you want to make it pretty. One more trick, we also cube any kind of Tofurky and put the skewers over the fire in the fireplace. We love, love it that way. As far as the sliced ones, our faves are Tofurky and Field Roast.

The Hazelnut and Cranberry is my bf and mine favorite holiday roast option... Also, field roast does a smaller sage and garlic roast which is great for a week night dinner

I've tried a different meatless Turkey roast the last three years: Trader Joes, Wholefoods 365 and this year Tofurky (red box) Roast & Gravy which we actually had today ! Best Roast flavor: Tofurky Worst rubbery/dense texture: Tofurky my family all agreed it was our least fav texture of the 3 Best Gravy: Tofurky (A) Worst Gravy: Whole Foods 365 (F) So tasteless & extremely salty (so bad I had to throw away) Best Stuffing within Roast: Tofurky Close 2nd Roast & Stuffing: Whole Foods 365 Can't remember how I felt about Trader Joes stuffing in the roast back in 2022 😂 I do remember liking the roast though 😊 I didn't know till now that Trader Joe's had brought back their meatless Turkey Roast this year. I will most likely buy that again in 2025 😊

I will stand behind the gardein roast all day. I dont really eat cause it reminds me of turkey, it just tastes damn good and reminds me of their chicken which I love! but I definitely make my own gravy haha. Great video Merle!!

@MerleONeal2 ай бұрын
I would say it entirely depends on whether you're going to make your own stuffing! - if you are, spring for the Field roast, if not, trader joes!!

So glad you’re doing this taste test, hosting a small thanksgiving for non vegans. I love your sweater! I grew up going to Griffith Park. Where can I purchase a sweater like that?

Oh my gosh! Which vegan roast are you going to buy for them? I'm invested. And honestly, this was a second-hand sweater that was given to me by soneone who wasn't wearing it anymore (I try to get second-hand everything when it comes to clothes) - I think originally its from Pacsun lol - but I also LOVE Griffith

I'm not vegan but i do use marmite for making gravy often because it has the complex flavours of browned meat. to up the umami you can add mushrooms. i also make my own very quick cranberry sauce using dried cranberries which i simmer in orange juice, and you add as much sugar as you need for your desired viscosity. it sets up thicker than you might expect. i know I'm late for thanksgiving (which i don't celebrate) but maybe these tips will help someone for Christmas dinner.

My husband and I have a tradition where we go and buy one of each of the vegan roasts we can find at TJs and Whole Foods. We always buy like 4 of the quorn ones because they’re literally just a bring of savory vegan protein for 8.99. A steel if you ask me

So i normally buy canned turkey to cut costs, but looking at portion size this is so much affordable since it’s got the gravy and stuffing as well. Ill probably go with the more adorable one
