Have had my GTV6 for 27 years now. Still enjoy it. Most people don't know what it is and some are curious. When I show them the real transaxle and inboard disc brakes they find it quite unique, as I still do. I have a 3.0-24v with GTA cams in mine now. It moves along nicely. I tell you though, even with the 2.5: 2-valve it's a sports car with a high fun factor and very engaging for the driver.
@joeelwell61615 жыл бұрын
The GTV6 was the one car I owned, and then remembered with love. So I've just bought an 84, and am in love again. But.... I now realize it's a 30-year-old car. Handling is primitive, steering is heavy, gearbox is really a mess. But (again)... once I mastered these primitive aspects, the car came alive. The sound from that engine is truly orgasmic - if you don't respond to it, then you and I are from different car/planets - it sings! It's underpowered by modern standards, so I"m now rebuilding a 3L for mine, with cams, higher compression, etc. I am looking forward to an operatic performance with more thrust. \ But (again) - It makes me wonder if a brand such as Alfa Romeo, as I experience it's output of 30 years ago, can bring forward the passion into today's world. I sure hope so.

Indeed, I remember how fortunate I was at 19 years old to be able to buy a red '84 GTV6 with only 33k miles on it. This one guy at work when I waited tables was working a second job and was about 10 years older than I was at the time, he asked if the Alfa was mine, I replied with pride, why yes it is!......he then stated he had test driven one, and with a pithy smirk stated the steering was too heavy, the clutch too stiff and shifting too difficult......I said oh yeah, well.......it takes a real man to drive one!......needles to say I wiped that little smirk right off his face.....I know, that was a bit of an arrogant thing to say, but I was 19, testosterone driven and he was trying to dis the Alfa, oh hell no he won't, I thought.

I have a GTV6 (116) sitting waiting for a resto. The car has 86K mls, 137K kms on it and it still looks in good condition despite being 34years old and despite me (I drive my cars, I don't polish them). The resto will involve a full rebuild with 2.5ltr supercharged engine of about 300bhp with full hi spec heads job with big cams and tubular manifolds and exhaust, full digital engine management, big brakes and Simmons suspension with 8"x16 wheels with 225/55x16 sticky tyres. The 60deg V6 has the most beautiful sound of any engine ever produced and hopefully my M60 supercharger whine will add the classic Alfa GP note to that overture.

For that effort and requested investment volume you can buy a real Italian Sportslimousine like a spotless Maserati Quattroporte with little km's and a 4.2 Ferrari V8 engine. Costs between 15k and 20k for a 2005 MY onwards. It's something real and not a cheap Alfa box. I do love classic Alfa Romeo myself but there is a limit on investment! My first car ever was a AR 75 3.0 America. A wonderful sports limousine with Grace and style. The old GTV looks amazing too of course!

@@houseofwine7704 I love grapes and I thoroughly enjoy pineapples but I can make a glorious wine from grapes but only a passable alcoholic drink from the pineapple - the pineapple should only be enjoyed in its original form but the grape becomes a thing of beauty when its worked upon to create a magnificent Chateau Lafite or Dom Perignon.

Thank you for bringing fond memories of my amazing Alfa GTV. It was modified by a German company to make it lethal above 100 km/hr as the engine could rev up to 9 thousand revs. On the freeways I loved to embarrass M5 BMW's by tucking into their back bumper & pushing them to their limit, then pass them as if they were looking for parking. ha-ha The only problem was, I could only drive that fast for less than 30 mins or risk overheating. ha-ha At that time, I would slow down to let the BMW catch up, acting like I wanted to give them another chance. ha-ha I miss my GTV very much. Thanks for sharing.

I owned a 1985 GTV-6 which I had a local Alfa Race preparer modify the suspension geometry for me, incl: lowered rear roll centre, negative rear and front camber, 28mm torsion bars, Koni yellow shocks, lowered stiffer springs, 205 Simmons rims, Yokohama tyres, extractors, a Remus Sports exhaust & custom body kit. I later added a kevlar racing seat, Sabelt 6 point harness, momo steering wheel & momo geer knob. Though even in that trim, It really needed 215 wheels, 4-pot brakes + cross-drilled disks, a 3-litre kit like the Autodelta version, re-built drive shaft with U-joints & a gear box upgrade would have been nice also, lol. That car was a money-sucker!. To me, the ultimate Alfa Romeo would be an Alfaholics-rebuilt South African Autodelta GTV6 no question
