Al Muqaddimah

4 жыл бұрын

As Emir Abdullah laid on his deathbed, he had one final decision to make. He had to choose his successor. After a lifetime of bad decisions, he finally made a good one. He had four sons who were still alive, but he skipped them all and he named his grandson, Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad to be the next Emir. His grandson, whose father, he had murdered himself. Abd al-Rahman, forever his favourite, an attractive young man, only 21 years of age, with blue eyes and white skin, was to inherit an emirate in disarray. His grandfather’s power reached barely outside the palace’s walls. On 16th of October, 912CE, Emir Abd al-Rahman III ascended to the Emirate.
Additional Facts:
1) Emir Abdullah had married Onneca Fortúnez, who was the princess of the Kingdom of Navarre. Fortun was captured in a battle by Muhammad I, who probably allowed Fortun his freedom on the condition that he marry his daughter to Muhammad’s son, Abdullah.

Nice job describing how Abd al-Rahman's early balancing act with the clans allowed him to develop the reputation as a ghazi and internal cohesion required to take a step as momentous as a Caliphal claim. Much of the rise and fall of the Caliphate of Cordoba from here out more often comes down to managing peoples and personalities than decisive battles.

12:01 this is the city of Hama in Syria which i am from, it's also called the city of Norias ( water wheels) , the Noria in the picture as i said is in Hama but in Al-Andalus they copied them and there were many norias in Al-Andalus therefore, some still exist till this day in Spain as far as i know. In Hama there still are 17 norias, you can walk in the city and you would see many of the norias and people take pictures with them.

I'm guessing you're going to branch the reign of Almanzor next, and after that the fall of the caliphate of Cordoba, Please when you get to the Andalusian civil war try to describe it in detail, most sources say that after the death of Almanzor, Al andalus fell into a civil war and the caliphate fragmented, or decribe it as merely a berber revolt which is very inaccurate, it was a 30 year long civil war and I'd like more details please, I only ever found one french article that goes into the details, and even that was vague enough, thanks.

I’m surprised after so many years the Umayyads were content to simple reman in quasi exile ruling Spain. The dynasty had been given a new lease in life by Abdul Ramanan yet in his time as Emir he never attempted to march back to Damascus or at least claim North Africa. And seemingly no action from his heirs to over throw the Abbasids or encourage pro Umayyad rebellions especially when the caliphate became unstable. logically it’s difficult to march a army from Spain through the Maghreb conquer Egypt without encoring significant loses and take the holy land and the Levant all while the local population may not be happy with the Umayyad return. At the same time the Abbasid revolution and the near slaughter of the Umayyad family would have simply traumatized the survivors enough that they were simply content ruling their domain in Andalusia physically separate from the rest of the Islamic world that would see them dead.
