Yeah definitely right. They treat the minority characters like characters first which is what makes this work. So often stories just shove in a minority character without really adding anything to them just because they want surface level diversity. This show actually treated the minority characters with respect by developing them and making them interesting. It was so refreshing to see.

Yeah, it's mostly because it doesn't feel forced down your throat. So many of nowadays "representation movies" feel like they're swinging a tolerance club yelling "look how progressive we are" and they introduce characters which very forcefully emphasize the fact that they're a strong and independent women etc and they really reiterate how strong this *woman* is, instead of just having a strong character, that happens to be a woman. In most of the cases I feel like the audience doesn't give a damn about whether a character is female, gay, bi, black or whatever (except when historic characters get changed for the sake of inclusion, that is still a bit annoying) because it often doesn't matter for the story, and when then this political agenda gets forced down your throat anyway without being important for the movie or show or whatever it can get really annoying even if you agree with the statement itself. This show really just has good characters that just happen to be gay, black, bi etc. But it doesn't force it. I mean the ultimate goal of tolerance should be "I really don't give a flying fuck how this person looks, feels, identifies himself/herself as, as long as it's a good person". And that's exactly the case in the show. I wouldn't care if Allison was white or Luthor was hispanic and bi or Vanya strictly straight and asian or whatever constellation you could think of, they're good characters and their "features", if you want it to call it that, just happen to be there but they don't get forced and that's what ultimate acceptence should feel like. Those "features" really don't matter, it's the character that defines who and how they are, the rest is just "second fiddle" and irrelevant in a way, not better nor worse, if you know what I mean.
