Why would it be unfortunate that people have cognitive difficulties? You would wish someone to have a more difficult life? You would not find it unfortunate that the parents have to do additional research and have additional stresses beyond those common to all parents? As for Elliot Page, there are two people in his relationship with his ex-wife, himself and Porteney (?) who is a lesbian. I know that it is common for trans people to state that they were always trans, however I very much doubt that information was given to his ex-wife before they married or for several years into the relationship. To be fair, I don't believe Elliot himself realized all of this information, and that he did not deliberately deceive her in any way. He was discovering who he was. But if you try to rewrite history with Elliot having always been a man then yes, it does look like he deceived her and lied to everyone. When you write history, there are two ways to write it, and one of those ways is by presenting the information available at the time and following the progression of the story as new information is revealed and how people reacted to it. That is the method the writer used, and I think doing so painted a picture of Elliot's relationship that was both accurate and fair to both of the people in it.

Autism is not just "difficulties" we think in a different way, have special interests and many of us have benefits like exceptionally good memory, the ability to solve math problems quickly, higher IQ etc. We are not be pitied, and most autistic people are either proud of their autism is brainwashed by ableism
@jenniferhanses70642 жыл бұрын
@@simonejun6115 One of my ex bosses has autistic twins. One is non verbal. The other has a handful of words. They're frequently violent and beat up their parents. When last I spoke with her, she and her husband were having arguments over putting the kids in a special living facility. And it was tearing them apart because they both loved the kids, but they were not able to manage the children's needs any more. I daily see less extreme stories of autistic people and those who live with them and the extra work that often has to be put into that situation to make the relationship work and to assist in the care and raising of the autistic person, and how that work is freely done out of love and family duty, but that extra work still exists. I know it's a spectrum and that there can even be advantages, but there's always difficulties listed in learning to speak with people, understand what they mean, and cope with the world because of the different viewpoint. And to not be willing to acknowledge such difficulties is gaslighting and invalidating to people who have to live with them. There needs to be a balance in supporting people with disabilities, whether mental or physical, and their families, while still acknowledging that the disability exists and can cause challenges with the level of difficulty to be determined by the individual and the people around them.

Okay I am very open-minded, but am growing up in a household not so much so, we are all struggling to understand but are trying to.... That being said I don't want to be offensive and have a genuine question: is it still not okay to call Elliot Ellen when giving backstory on his life because at one point in time (even though Elliot has always been Elliot and he/they, that's who he is), Elliot was called Ellen in real life and wasn't out yet? Idk if that made sense so to restate the question: is it not okay to call Elliot Ellen when giving a backstory on his life because the name Ellen was once a reality for him? Also his previous wife is a lesbian who fell in love with a woman at the time (even if it is a dead name or misgendering, it did happen that way) and it makes more sense to state history as it happened in reality
@dr.seesaw88942 жыл бұрын
So I've noticed the deadnaming and misgendering in the video - but it seems to come more from a place of not being informed on trans people as opposed to active malice. I doubt the creator will see this but just in case they do (and this could be helpful to anyone else reading), when referring to a trans person in the past (pre-transition), you should still use their current name and pronouns as opposed to the old ones, and then clarifying if necessary if the person in question is comfortable about sharing that information

They only use the name Ellen in past tense which I feel is appropriate. I'm not the final word end all that be all obviously but Elliot hasn't expressed any negativity towards this. But again, I dunno I guess it varies between individuals. Personally by default I'll go with the current preference, but I'll admit I occasionally slip. Especially with someone like Page who I've followed since Hard Candy (my BFF went to school with... him) so sometimes I catch myself slipping on gendering. But I try. Literally the least I can do. Not transphobic and also have no problem calling him Elliott but do have a problem with everyone who feels they have to say something when it had nothing to do with them. If Elliott had a problem he's a big boy and can stand up for himself.

Yeah. I feel like the Trans community are reading too deep into this, getting themselves involved when nothing is being directly said to them, or targeted at them, and they're getting themselves hurt for no reason. As I've said before it's all about perspectives. We can see things in a positive light and take Elliots journey as a good thing instead of looking at things in a darker light & twisting everything out of proportions. Everybody think they know what Elliot wants by forming their own opinions about things but how would they know what Elliot wants? Do they talk to him on the daily? I've seen many other Trans youtubers who share their journeys on here and honestly it's quite a beautiful thing. There is no shame with knowing about a person's past and where they came from.

Autism is not something to fix. It can't be fixed. It's not a trait with which a kid is "unfortunately" born. It is a neurodevelopmental disorder which forces/allows people to experience life differently (and I'm not sugarcoating it). The real misfortune is that society is not designed to accommodate benevolent neurodivergencies, such as autism, while ableism, misrepresentation and absence of education on the subject are the rule. A fact that leads to autism becoming truly disabilitating for people on the spectrum. The clip picked for this video portrays maybe inexperienced or uneducated parents at the time it was recorded. It's a shame that this particular clip was the one chosen for a video regarding a generally diverse and inclusive series. It perpetuates ableistic and offensive views in the best case.

To be fair they did say he& elliot consistently as soon they got to that part of the history, like they were talking about elliots past in which he DID at THAT time identify as female & lesbian, then they got to the history of him coming out as trans & referred to him as "he" consistently from then on

@@Sabrina-gv1zf when you talk about a trans person, you use the pronouns they're using now, even when you're talking about their past life. If you don't, you're misgendering them. And if you think that's OK to do so, then you're transphobic my friend.

But please, if you don't know a subject, educate yourself before talking about it. You'll be sure you won't hurt anybody. Especially when it's about an oppressed minority or a community. @@deeplander ok but elliot went on a journey from being a gay women to a trans man, that was a real journey he went on & through, for many years he identified as a gay woman, now he identifies as a trans man( which is thats so great & lovely& amazing- he should live the life that feels authentic to him, all should be happy for him & anyone who isnt is a just a confused hateful person who probably hates themselves too) but like yes if they were ALWAYS a man& always identified as a man than it wouldnt be a TRANSISTION, i dont think elliot is under some kind of delusion that they didnt live half their life publicly as a woman & lesbian, sure he may never have felt right or comfortable until he transistioned but elliot DID live their life as a woman& WAS a self identified lesbian for many years of his life, and thats OK & then they came out as trans and THATS OK too, the point is that this video DID consistently use he/elliot consistently & only as soon as they got to that part of the history- now you can argue that the should have used he & elliot the entire time thats perfectly fair, but they were talking about elliots past when he DID publicly identify as female & lesbian& they told the whole story of him coming out (first as a lesbian women& second as trans man) at which point they only used he & eliot from then on, again you can say that wasnt improper but it is clear that the intent wasnt based in transphobia or disrespect otherwise they wouldnt have used he/eliot from that point on- it seems clear they were trying to tell the story of that journey not be disrespectful & while its fair to make the case why it should be done differently I really dont think it helps ANYONE ecspecially not trans people to react in such a hostile way when someone clearly was not intending to be disrespectful EVEN If it felt disrespectful in your view- the goal should never to be to shame & outrage & scold people who make a mistake or arent fully aware of something it should be to INFORM& EDUCATE to hopefully make them aware in the future, otherwise its exactly these kind of reactions are what FEED so much of the backlash& anti trans anti woke hysteria & it comes off like obnoxious virtue signaling which only turns people away & into hate filled aholes.
