Floch is the shadow of Erwin, in both the literary and the Jungian psychology way. He was created by Erwin's decisions at Shiganshina, has devoted his life to the rationalization of his survivor's guilt, and shows how Erwin's charisma and nationalistic spirit can be weaponized. As someone else put it, "He's the side character who became a main character because everyone else was too busy being dead."

What I love about Floch is that before he charged against Zeke and before he became Eren's Dragon, he saw himself as a coward who jumped into something beyond his capabilities. That charge? Changed him. First, it proved to himself that he is not a coward. Second? Surviving the charge? Filled him with a sense of purpose. All he wanted after that was to make _it_ count: his survival and his death. People see him as a power-grabbing fascist, but while that may be a valid interpretation I also see a completely selfless patriot willing to do whatever it takes for the cause he fights for to succeed. There is no such thing as a bloodless revolution. He is selfless because aside from some of the risks he takes for Eren all carrying a large chance of him getting hanged if they failed, he's there risking himself. Participating in the fight. Leading the men. Openly declaring his intentions. A coward after power wouldn't risk the possibility of dying and not enjoying that power. No, Floch legit sees what he's doing as necessary to restore order and usher in the new age he believes Eren will give their people. When he says "Sasageyo" despite twisting it to suit his propaganda purposes as the Number Two of the Yeagerist party--he still genuinely believes it.

@Borderose2 жыл бұрын
@@kaijuliet5685 Oh, they would have acted differently. They would have all changed, sure. I'm willing to bet on that too. You don't come back from that experience the same person who went towards it. But they would have all had different realizations from what Floch had. Had Marlo lived, for example, I believe he would have realized what was really important in his life and stopped being an aimless martyr looking for a cause. Marlo wanted to help because aside from being a generally good person he felt useless and he didn't want to be like the corrupt MPs he saw. After that charge? He'd be kinder to himself and realize he has value, he doesn't owe anyone shit, and his happiness is his own choice. He'd still help around because he likes it, but he'll be loathe to offer his life for any cause he doesn't 100% believe needs it. Hell, I have a feeling with his post-charge epiphany he might have proposed to Hitch immediately afterwards. 4 years later, he might be a married man with kids. Retired from the army and living in the interior. He wouldn't form the Yeagerists. At least not as Floch did. He could be pro or anti Eren for different reasons: pro because assuming he started a family himself he'd be loathe to go with Zeke's plan and sacrifice his and his family's future, and anti because he's still a principled guy who knows genocide, even of his enemies, is wrong. But, point is: Floch acted like Floch. Everyone would act as themselves. Everyone would get an epiphany. But not everyone gets the same kind.
@smileyp45352 жыл бұрын
A "completely selfless patriot" who will do whatever they need for the nation state at the expense of all else is basically just facism, so yeah he'd basically be Stalin if Eren decided to not go full genocidal and then took over afterwards and did it, especially if Eren was actually right in the end and didn't try to destroy the world but then Floch took over after Eren dies (against Eren's wishes) That's basically the story of Lenin and Stalin, Lenin was ruthless but actually wanted socialism and communism and freedom eventually to happen, Stalin just wanted power and used his influence to gain it and went full facism after Lenin and make the USSR look even worse kind of like how Eren actually did The story of the USSR under Stalin and China's CCP is very similar to attack on titan's Marlyans and Eldians the capitalist world lied and tried to smother the potentially peaceful and communist utopias and then turned them into the monsters they said they were by inflation and subversion into facism 😩

Floch gathered Eren's floch, Yeagerists
@Joshu-y1k5 ай бұрын
There's an interesting hidden meaning in Floch's name. His full name is Floch Forster I Forster (German): occupational and topographic name for someone who lived and worked in a forest. Season 4 episode 13 (Children of the Forest) establishes the idea that humanity is trapped in a "forest" where we believe the only solution to our problems is death and violence, leading to endless conflict. Sasha's father argues that it's the duty of the adults to get the next generation out of the forest, as that's the only way to prevent history from continuing to repeat itself. In Season 4 episode 14, we see Floch dragging the next generation into the "forest" by forcing the new cadets to brutally attack a defenseless soldier. Unnecessary violence is made a requirement, and those that refuse are punished with imprisonment. "Savagery" is a fitting title for this episode. The Eldian Empire had a long history of brutal acts of death and destruction. The Yeagerists are now following in their footsteps, repeating the same mistakes.

Love the essay, I think there's a ton to unpack with Floch's character. I would throw two cents in and say replace "demon" with "leader" then you have exactly the formula on why Floch's decision lead him to where he's going to go. Floch was looking for a "leader" to follow that would protect the island and the people. Sure Armin was brilliant but he was never a leader figure. Even when he had the role thrust on to him, he rarely inspired others outside of the core cadets. Through Floch's traumatic experience he knew how important a leader figure was to get people committed. Eren, when he stopped his emotional childish outburst became that figure. An idealized vision of power and change. Based on what we saw, Eren probably rarely talked to the Jagerist which added to that mysterious powerful figure image. This is where Floch's agency comes in as he becomes the mouth piece for the faction. With Eren probably never countermanding Floch's actions and decision, that probably empowered Floch to slowly create his OWN vision of the future. His god leader figure never disagreed with him so there for, he is RIGHT. And that right there is the mixture for a fascist dictator. VISION and a overwhelming sense of SELF RIGHTOUSNESS with little sense for COST or REPERCUSIONS.

I think Floch basically tried to become Erwin. I think after he saw Levi (wrongly in his opinion) pass over the chance to revive Erwin, Floch realized the leadership vacuum that he left, and tried to fill it. I think the charge changed him fundamentally, and expelled any selfish motivations for himself, but he strongly recognized how badly the scouts were weakened without Erwin. So he tried to become that leader, and adopted that mindset, but was still a fundamentally different person who went down a different path than Erwin would have.

Yeah, Floch was trying to be someone who could keep a lot people united under a banner that would lead to Paradis survival. The way he's written adds a nice vibe of realness to the ending of the story. Eren doing what he's doing is one thing. Really dope to see imo from the writing side of it.

one of the things I love about floch is something I realised in episode 82 when he had his monologue. it was the episode that made me stop hating him and realise his purpose. before I just saw him as an annoying nobody that came outta nowhere and tried to be important when all he was really doing was being annoying. saw him as more of an attention-seeking lapdog than an idealist one. what I realised after his monologue was that he's actually just a survivalist. and thus he has a perfect dichotomy with eren "freedom fries" jaeger. floch doesn't REALLY care about freedom. he cares about living. fighting for his life and dying in an honorable way. that's why he states that there's nothing wrong with submission and that it's better than going out swinging for some cause. on the other hand, eren doesn't care about living as long as his freedom's intact. which makes sense as he doesn't seem to mind much that his life is shortened as a titan shifter. it's this dynamic of how they both fight for the same goals for fundementally different reasons that made me kinda go "ahhhhhhhh I getchu. floch's kinds okay B)" and realise his purpose in the story and philosophy of attack on titan.
