The new GM will actually have some advantages. He will have a two year window to re-shape the team. If # 34 and Mitch depart that frees up $22+ Million, which could add 3 or 4 top ranked players, that have a more complete game than the Leaf stars. As a new GM he is free to make such a move, while Kyle was more committed to them.

So by that rationale instead of letting them walk as Free agents (and getting the cap room) the best plan is to liquidate them for picks and prospects in advance of them leaving for nothing

What needs to happen in order for this team to win the cup is as follows: the new GM Must come into Toronto wanting to KEEP the core four AND find an significant upgrade to our blueline. In order for this to happen the new GM is going to have to tell Matthews if he wants to keep the “CORE FOUR” and stay in Toronto he will NEED to take a pay cut… BEING A CHOKING HAZARD and just a simple lack of results from the team being contributors to his pay cut. If he does not agree with these terms one of two things follow; 1. New GM decides to RESIGN Matthews at at HEFTY price at the EXPENSE of another member of the “CORE FOUR”. (Marner, Tavares, Nylander.) All this to either trade or sign a significant blue liner because I BELIEVE in this team BUT someone needs to pay at the end of the day for all the heartbreak.

One thing that bothers me about the core players on the leafs is that they hardly ever take part in optional skates. It also happens in the playoffs. 🤬🤬🤬

Matthews is not going to sign in Edmonton that’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, he’ll either resign in Toronto or head closer to home as Arizona is a train wreck

But that’s the problem, give Mathews 13 mil , nylander will say then I’m worth 10 mil, and marner in two years will say then I’m worth 12-13 mil and it’s the same thing, trying to fill holes on defence and bottom six with very little cap space

@@hockeyman1054 Shanahan's job is far more reaching than that. He is responsible for the economic health of the hockey part of MLSE. With an annual intake of around $400 million, his job is not in jeopardy. Players like Marner, Matthews, Nylander and Tavares have had a lot to do with the team financial results. Playoff participation used to be a dream , now it is a sure thing. The GM's job is to put a complete team on the ice to get the team as far as possible. They need to keep working at that. Moving their best assets is not in the cards.
