My man Porco is the kind of pig that would die in the spanish civil war, I think the marxist in Miyazaki clash with the Nipon pacifistic post war view, anyway I searched and a part II could be in preproduction, and you also said it while I was writing this, so I would not write anymore of that. But if not that kind of pig would have died on the resistence, more probably in the forgoten italian one, a Miyazaki bella ciao, would like to see that.

Sad news everyone. Shuuichirou Moriyama, the voice actor of Porco himself, passed away this Monday due to pneumonia. To me, this still is the best Studio Ghibli movie and his passing leaves now a giant hole in my heart. I will always remember this movie and this character as one of Miyazaki's finest and most charming... Shuuichirou Moriyama gave such a heartfelt performance for Porco that it'll stay with me for the rest of my life. R.I.P. Shuuichirou Moriyama, you will be dearly missed.

I don't think it's necessarily underated. It's just aimed at a different audience (middle aged man) than most other Ghibli movies. I for example didn't care that much for it because I'm probably not the target audience but I see why other people might like it. It was mostly because I didn't really know how to feel about all these grown men hitting on a teenager...But I guess it's better than castle in the sky where all the pirates fall in love with a literal child.

@@Stevem oh for sure I'm not saying that only middle aged men can enjoy it. I'm just saying It's probably meant to appeal more to an older age group, who would be able to relate to Porco more than a kid or a teenager would (I think Miyazaki said this himself).
@Stevem
@Stevem 3 жыл бұрын
@@razvanradoiu he said the tofu brained comment at first , although the movie evolved over time after that, i'd say this is still a straight up family film full of whimsy, but having a middle age protagonists and digging a little deeper into real word situations as well as its references which you'd have to be middle aged to get, is what he means more so. Outside of The Wind Rises i'd say it's pretty easy for anyone young or old to get on with his work which is by design.

Sorry baby, gotta fly. Watched this when I was around 7 years old with my older bro, don't think any of Miyazaki's films stuck to me as much as Porco Rosso. Now 23, this film still leaves a bittersweet nostalgia in me whenever I hear its osts. Everyone references Spirited Away or Laputa or Totoro, and while I do agree to a certain extent of the achievement in these great films, Porco is what resonated to me the most while growing up from a child to a teenager to a young adult and eventually to an adult. Like Gina, I would also fall in love with a man who says to me, sorry baby, gotta fly. It's the chasing of those unstaying, fleeting moments in life that spurs us. It's wanting to grasp something unobtainable that makes it all the more romantic. And it's the act of trying to reverse something irreversible that made me fall in love with this pig.

Porco Rosso always stood out to me as being the _most_ character driven film under Miyazaki’s belt. Unlike most of his catalogue, the only appeal of this one is the characters instead of both the characters and their surroundings, along with the implications of the elements within the characters’ surroundings. There’s no (overt) magic, no spells, no witches, no wizards and no talking spirits. The curse he’s under is never explicitly explained to the audience. The only film that comes close to this type of tone is kiki’s delivery service, but even that one still has a somewhat central focus on magic and incorporates it into its worldbuilding. This contrast makes watching Porco Rosso a genuine treat to come back to, because the strength of the characters shines all the brighter and makes it a delight to get lost in. It also has a sort of...maturity to it compared to other Miyazaki films that I appreciate now more than ever. I think of all his movies, this one is probably the only one that you can have a massive perspective shift on as you grow older, because of the themes of survivor’s guilt, middle aged pessimism and the role of youthful optimism in the societies we live in. If you watch this movie now, and then watch it ten years later, I guarantee you’ll feel differently about the themes the film presents than you did when you first viewed it. Because I know I did. (Great review btw.)

Porco is the movie about where we are now; having lived through something awful in the past and knowing that something awful is coming in the future, but in the meantime we are drifting aimlessly unsure of ourselves. I just watched it very recently (I'm doing a marathon, I got up to Whisper of the Heart), and it's definitely in my top 2 thus far, Laputa edges it thanks to its timeless adventure feel, but Porco Rosso certaintly feels much more personal to Miyazaki, and as I'm now older, its themes resonate much more with me. It’s interesting to me that Porco Rosso has the most mature cast of any Ghibli film. Practically all the characters are middle aged. I think that gives it added depth, especially for Porco and Gina. They’re not the excited kids we saw in the flashback anymore, but they still have quite a bit of life ahead of them and they have to decide how they want to live it. Also the scenery is gorgeous and the attention to detail is phenomenal, even for a Ghibli film.

The detail of the characters and sounds of the planes... It inspired me to want to fly. A few years later, I signed up for a discovery flight. Thanks to Porco. I read that this film is Miyazaki's personal favorite. Anytime I'm asked my favorite Miyazaki film and respond Porco Rosso, no one thus far has said they've seen it. This film's been on my watch list for ages, and I'm glad to see it's so well loved by so many (several people I talk to think it looks too odd to be anything but a comedy). Interesting how you brought up that the film was Miyazaki's "self indulgent project." Though, maybe I'm just reading into it too much! Great video!

Ghibli's fanaticism in controlling their IP is legendary, and in the context of the theme of this movie, ironic. I enjoyed the review, thank you.

Just to give you a reason to rewatch the movie again: It has a hidden ending, that I have yet to see anyone talk about. Porco overcomes himself and his memories to become a human again and returns to Gina. Pay close attention to the hints given in the last minutes of the movie.

@@ripzmad9846 at the end of the film you'll see Porco's red seaplane parked by the hotel garden during daytime, and another scene Gina is not sitting in the garden, hinting that she won the "bet", he finally visits her during the day and she's no longer waiting for him. I also think that the pig appearance is just how he sees himself in his mind because of all the self loathing and guilt, being the only survivor during the war battle and all of his friends were gone, and his general view on humanity.

I'm convinced that one of the greatest cuts of all time is when Gina says "Oh Porco, how will we ever break that curse on you" and Porco responds right before Curtis' engine starts up with "Face it Gina" *booom* "I'm a pig".

Genuinely great video, the film is definitely one of my very favourites and stands in parallel, albeit jocund instead of cynical, to Disco Elysium's location in the radical pantheon of contemporary art. A brilliant, beautiful film that left an impression on me since watching it with a partner years ago - originally because the thought of a cocky flying pig was (and still is) quite amusing.

Some of the most beautiful aerial scenes (in the filmo of a guy who loves flying vehicles) and the funniest lighthearted humor, and who can still hit you in the feels with scenes like the Marco's vision

it was such a weird experience watching ghibli movies in french i remember watching porco rosso and thinking le temps des cerises song was just put there at random as a kind of costcutting measure but rewatching it now makes it so much better. there was also the amazing job by the french dubbing team in most ghiblis which helped so much

I love how Marco is a bounty hunter but he doesn’t actually kill. The pirate mentioned it when Curtis and Marco was fighting for the bet he said “the pig is not a killer”. Marco had a perfect opportunity to shoot but he didn’t. This idea is also seen even at the beginning of the film, he doesn’t kill the pirates instead he stops them in his own way. This also gives me an idea thats since he’s experienced war and seeing his friends die I think he doesn’t want to see much of that anymore. That’s why he doesn’t kill, he doesn’t want to see people die anymore. I think everyone even the pirates even if they don’t admit, they see him as a good guy.. everyone sees this except him. Love this film I had to watch it again just to remember the story. It’s such a light hearted and sad movie at the same time.
