My son does a lot of missionary work in Uganda and he asked me to come up with a system that would not require wood as it is very sparse there! This system was a proto type that could be easily buried in the sand and they could grow food in the heat of the summer!

what will happen when it rains heavily . Does it disturb the whole system. when the excess rain water accumulate inside the grow bag and then into the gutter. please explain
@randypuaatuua8104
@randypuaatuua8104 8 жыл бұрын
the bag is made of woven plastic material - it breathes and excess water will leak out. the gutter will naturally overflow, I'm sure you'd also want to be careful about where you place the pipe, not in an area with poor drainage or prone to flooding in light rains.

Thank you. the overflow water may takes away the manure and other fertilizers from the soil. Also I could find from the video that they are using plastic buckets without holes other than net cup. does it not stopping the Breathability and excess rain water flow?

I took you up on your comment of getting stares buying wall-mart bags. I went in for 30 bags. The register I was at had about 4, so with a line forming behind me, the cashier went to about 4 or 5 other cashiers who each had from 3 to 5 bags. I loved getting the stares but they were from customers behind me and not really from wallmart employees as I was expecting. Some people in my situation would get nervous, but I love the attention. Thank you for your utubes...My wife loves the system.

I got to do this. It looks like the best way. And I think I will put it up off the ground to keep animals away. This can be on a table or a trailer as in multi levels and portable (on a driveway ) if you move or sell the whole thing and make another one. Or want to rotate it. Great looking system.

There are nylon fabric in nut milk bags that are 70 and 200 microns of filtering power. You could probably use some of that at the bottom of bag to prevent roots from expanding into the tube. I think you can just get fabric. It easily allows water to pass through.

Hi Larry the idea of using a Walmart bag for air pruning is such a great idea. The cost is a great savings over hydroponic fabric bags that are self pruning. I will integrate your wicking fabric walmart pots with my systems right away. I have everything to make it now and appreciate you sharing this Simple Inexpensive solution to containers that can be used in both dirt and soil less gardening! I have used the dry fertilizer and spikes around the perimeter and it does work very well.

Larry, When you are putting your PVC together, especially on a first trial, instead of PVC glue, you can use wax from a toilet bowl ring. The wax will seal non-pressure joints nicely, and if you need to change something, rearrange it, or maintain the system, you can hit it with a hot air gun, and separate the joints easily. Thanks for a great video.

One thing that could have been done different (a little more expensive, unfortunately): A second sheet of plastic like the one you put over the pipe laid underneath the pipe would keep soil out no matter when the holes are drilled, as well as keep wet soil, or dirty water, from seeping between the top sheet and the pipe and into the holes. I noticed that without that lower sheet, there were dark spots creeping toward the holes in the pipe under the top sheet in your video. Very thought-provoking, thank you. I'll be watching more of your videos in the future to add more great ideas to my gardening schemes.

Good clip. About glue; I only use glue for anything permanent like house-plumbing. As for something like this, I use tuck-tape or electrical-tape. -- (last year for a 140ft watering rig, top-ground-leveled with 1½in pvc criss-cross with 1/16 every foot drip-holes on the top of the pipe, I had some 15 unions, 7 elbows, 9 T-unions. everything help perfect without any tape or glue and no leek. I let the gravity from the near-by container do the watering each night for 30min rain/no-rain) --. That way I can re-fit whenever I want, and also dismantle the whole rig for wintering (up-north canada gets hard winter more often;)

I had a system like this for about a year and its fine for small plants, but larger plants became to hard to support and harvest. I switched to gravel filled pots and bathtubs. Much safer, especially if the pumps goes caput on you and you arent home to catch it. Good luck and kudos for saving water!

Thumbs up on your continuous innovations, renovations, tweaks and variations plus all the practical hands on hacks from your own personal experience. Your videos are delight and practical and are inspiring me to share a few of my own variations in the near future. You are one of the few KZbin sharers that seem to mention and grasp the important concepts of water pruning and air pruning. With that in mind BTW, Do you keep your 4 in pipe flooded at a constant level? In all sub irrigation systems, it is advisable to keep the water basin topped off at a target level to eliminate potential episodic drying and wetting. This helps insure no breaks in capillarity but even more importantly prevents roots from growing into the root cup because a constant soaked or flooded root cup will effectively root prune. If the soil in the cup dries then roots will grow into the cup seeking water. When the pipe water is replenished the root cup will flood and any roots that have grown into this zone will "drown" , rot and invite disease. I developed a constant flood , individual sub-irrigation system for my greenhouse and laboratory experients in the late 1980s for my Master's of Science at the University of Delaware. My advisor was so impressed by the simplicity of the time saving hack that we published the process in a scientific journal. I will see if i can track down a copy so that it can be shared with your viewers. The beauty of the correctly designed sub-irrigation system is that such a system works similarly for all soil and soiless types for most soil depths. Field crops and orchards will only drawn to max field potential and container plants will only "suck up enough water" to reach container capacity and therefore preserve the max amount of airspace for any specific soil type or mix. If one were to water pots filled with clay, sand and peatmoss from above with the same volume of water, the plant in the clay pot might drown, the plant in the sand may dry out to soon but when when supplied with water from below each soil type will wick up exactly to the limits determined by the mechanical and physical properties mostly based on physical particle size Keeping the water level constant in any sub irrigated, self watering, wicking bed system is the best way to insure success. Any system that can combine air pruning yet constant, sufficient capillarity is even better than constant flood

One way to keep the dirt out of the pipe might be to put the plastic in the trench and then put the pipe in. That way the dirt is held under the plastic and away from the holes in the pipe.

I just spray 1-2 TBS per gallon of Epsom salt water on my plants when blooming every month as a foliar spray. That seemed like a lot of Epsom salt a nice handful. I heard that the Epsom salt or sulfur 1 of them or both compete with the nitrogen and you only get the 1 that you put more of to the plant. Lime is for softening clay and it does something to the PH like lowers it or raises it. You got to have the right PH for optimal nutrient uptake.

next time your in the grocery stores and see diapers in the reduced section buy them but they need to be unscented and generic is usually better. Open them up and stick them in a bucket full of water and let them soak up the water. And then cut them open and add it to your compost it will act like the soil with the water beads in it.

Hi Larry. That is a great idea first of all and its a Great Share. I made a self watering system using several 55 gal plastic drums cut into half horizontally and a mix of different size containers all being gravity fed from a single reservoir. the way I controlled the water level was with a inline valve similar to yours and installed it into a a small flower box from Walmart. the box had a output into 1/2 inch tubing and was connected in series to all of the containers. All the containers or rows of sewer pipe would be level to each other as Yours but without the need for the valve to be installed in each row, instead the control box itself is placed at the level and each row is fed by 1 valve instead of 1 for each row. That will free up a good foot in each of your rows for growing another vegetable and make it unnecessary to have to work in such tight quarters. It worked really well for me growing very nice plants. I am going to watch some more of your videos keep them up You are down to earth and very informative in them. Thank You for sharing.

Lara Martin Lara, Mulch is one of the must important ingredients in the Natural Farming, helps to keep water from evaporation, gives to the Microorganism a better place to live, so they can work better for you, with mulching you can apply "The NO Tilling" Farming Way, NEVER use chemical things in your garden, Carpets have lots of Chemicals on their Bottom part, you want to EAT HEALTHY. I can imagine, you can see the owner of this place DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT NATURAL FARMING, His Answer is Good Idea! Brothers and Sister please do your Research, don't believe in people they don't know anything about Natural Farming. Is the same like Hydroponics, it is ALL ABOUT CHEMICALS !!!

BROTHER RAY The mulch helps only when you have the plants in the soil .. This system doesnt get fed by the surrounding dirt at all.. AND it has plastic under that mulch and fed by water going thru a PVC pipe.. I am well versed in the NO TILL gardening and even gardened with hay and newspaper for years over the spot. I was the first in my area to even use the book the no work garden by the lil lady up north who always just through another leaf of hay over any weed that dared show its face. Your comments are intellegent and true for the regular tilled garden or the mulched grown in ground garden but not for this method. Sorry However, people must understand that most all seedlings or veggies somewhere have been raised in plastic or under black plastic on large farms.. The root system blocks most all the components people are thinking may go up to the plant. The molecules must be so small and since it is not it wont affect the plant at all. Yes Do your research please. The molecules from the plastics must be under a certain size to be taken up the root system beyond the plants natural barrier. Oh and as for the Bags, they are biodegradable and created with the environment in mind. Oh and might I add.. Larry is pretty intellegent about gardening. He has come up with some of the most efficient ways to get nutrients to the plants right down to worm farming. I think it shows a lack of brains on your part for disrespecting this man.

Hi Mr. Hall. I thoroughly enjoyed your video. I especially liked it because it gave me an option of not being to intrusive to my yard, yet have a full garden feel and appearance. I started growing my own tomatoes, peppers, and basil this past spring. I have already pulled everything out ( pots ) and saved the seeds. Except the tomatoes, didn't know how to seed them. I didn't add any pesticide, because I don't want it on my food, but how do you keep from getting the worms or fungus. I would really love some tips on a natural pesticide that really works. Could you help me with that please?

To harvest tomato seeds, I scoop out the seeds and put them in a jar 3/4 full of warm water. (a salsa jar works well). Shake the jar real well, and let it sit one day. The fleshy part of the tomato will float, and the good seeds will sink to the bottom. Gently pour off the majority of water and repeat a second day. Drain the top again, fill and then pour the seeds into a fine strainer. Dump the seeds onto paper towel, newspaper or absorbant material (I like to use the blue shop towels). Put the seeds on a baking tray and let them dry in a sunny spot for 3 days. Put the dry seeds in storage bags or dry jar. (I like using empty vitamin jars for saving my seeds in). To manage bugs, I stick with a good neem oil, and Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds for most problems. Healthy plants typically do not require much else.

underground is the way to go but you can go complete hydroponic if you make a few changes like i did.

I thought you turned you rain gutters upside down in the winter. What do you think would have to done with this hybrid system in the winter? Would you have to remove the system from the ground or do you think the sewer pipe could handle the freeze? Thanks for all your help

Cool idea. I just put my plants in the ground for maximum yield. If you just went hydroponic and let the roots flourish like crazy then you would have huge yields. I don't think the roots would clog the flow of water like old house drainage pipes do when not schedule 40 over time.. well I know they wouldn't if you got a 6" dwv or schedule 40 pvc.. Might have to go bigger. A pluming supply company. Lowes or the Depot won't have anything bigger than 6" if you need any bigger. You might I don't know. The net cups you can't get at lowes or depot either. Nurseries or Good smoke shops or "head shops" have those net cups if you don't want big brother seeing what you buy online. ;)

When drilling holes in plastic, just back the edge off the drill, that is grind a flat on the cutting edge, thereby taking the sharp knife edge off the cutting edge. No more grabbing or cracking

I like it! What is a French drain system? My bug exterminator guy told me to try that because my tomato plants get flooded from roof run off. I have horrible clay just 4 inches deep the clay is there. I had to dig out the ground. I didn't go with raised beds. I went with 1/3 builders sand, 1/3 composted cow manure, and 1/3 miracle grow garden soil. I mixed in bone and blood meal with the backfill when I transplanted my plants. I sprinkled 90% sulfur into the transplant holes too. That's it besides well I am trying supreme growers 4 step system. The myco blast and soil blast and kelp blast and sweet myco tea. This is my 1st time growing anything. I am growing Carolina Reaper, brown moruga scorpion, chocolate moruga scorpion, regular moruga scorpion, 7-pot primo, 7-pot bubblegum, bhut jolokia, naga viper, king naga, 7-pot Jonah, red savina, heirloom cayenne, heirloom tabasco, and 5 different bell pepper plants. Then I am growing 8 different heirloom tomatoes too. This is the very 1st time that I have grown plants from seeds and or bought live plants and started a garden ever. I have 1 huge ruby red grapefruit tree I planted as a small tree from lowes when I was a small kid but that's all the gardening that I have ever done in my life until just now or well December of 2013. Oh ya and I forgot I am also growing some Jigsaw gourmet fatali plants and Jays peach and red Ghorpion plants too. I will have more peppers and tomatoes than I will know what to do with that is for sure. If I succeed.

The hybrid system uses Walmart bags which allow for air pruning of roots! Also if you have easy soil to work with no algae, no chance of mosquito's and very little construction. However it is not portable like the regular Rain Gutter System!
