Maurice seems almost like a Marcus Aurelius of his time. Overburdened with problems difficult to fix because of people (high debt, raise taxes, rebellions, etc) and surrounded by preying enemies. If he just had a little more time perhaps a somewhat stable arrangement with the Border with the Persians could have been maintained (with Kosrau II aiming his ambitions elsewhere) leaving him free to finish off the Avars and then possibly secure Italy and securing Spain (if he lived long enough to see it) Alas, he didn’t pay a ransom along with his other pay cuts (maybe he wanted to rescue them, order an attack, or hoped they attacked) and that would cost him the Army. No Army, no throne as Septimius Severus would likely say. Too bad Phocas was quite possibly the worst person to replace him

in reality majorian was a roman general who ruled the empire with ricimer and aegidius all three generals of rome who were in charge after the death of avitus in 456 ad. this was the case for more than a year with eastern emperor marcian being the official emperor of the west until in late 457 ricimer crowned majorian as emperor of the west who could restore the empire in it's former limits. sadly for my country majorian although initially successful in gaul and spain could not defeat the great vandal king geiseric as his fleet was burned in spain coast due to treachery and from that moment on majorian lost all confidence and he even signed a humiliating treaty with the vandal king an act which made ricimer furious and as a result he beheaded majorian when he returned in shame to italy. all in all majorian tried but at the end failed and that is what matters here mate.

Maiorian and Gallienus were truly tragic figures. So close, only to be betrayed. Aurelian was tragic, but he succeeded. Similarly witg Probus. Claudius II was little more than a good general who likely was the reason Zenobia turned on Rome (he might have even not defeated the Goths, it might have been Gallienus). Iulian's attempts to fight Christian influence was doomed to fail, so it's somewhat sad, albeit his Persian expedition was a stupid idea. Decius tried, but wasn't a capable man. Anthemius is a bit hard to assess, since he was tragic, but less successful (though it wasn't all his fault).

Excellent video. I love the emperor Maurice who brought a lot of good reforms and left behind the important work "Strategikon" (although some believe that it is not him, but another person during his reign). He also fared well against the Slavs, Avars and Persians. Unfortunately, Phocas contributed to that end and great disaster because Maurice's daughter Maria married the Persian Shah Khosrow II and the overthrow of Maurice by Phocas led to a great Byzantine-Persian war that weakened both sides. Fortunately, Heraclius repaired it, but unfortunately at a great cost.

Beautifully rendered! Captivating narrative, too. But I don't agree that but for Maurice's "mistakes," the Roman Empire could have been fully restored. The essential problem was the reduced resources of a weakened state available to carry out his huge ambitions. This surely informed his heavy taxation, reduced army wages, and refusal to ransom the captured soldiers that finally brought him down.

Maurice is definitely a very underrated emperor, he took an empire than was on the brink and managed some really impressive and unexpected results. However for all his successes, I can't help but feel he dug his own grave. His taxation policies were ruinous, and his treatment of his own soldiers was despicable. Even worse given the fact that he *should* have known better. The troops had already mutinied in 593 over wintering on the Danube, Maurice should have known better than to try the exact same stunt again, which is exactly what got him deposed. His actions during Phocas' mutiny were also very poor, and he showed poor judgement in dealing with the situation. Glad you mentioned some of that in the video though, far too many people demonize Phocas while giving Maurice a fair pass. Not a fan of the overuse of AI art in the recent videos though, it's very distracting and jarring.

This video makes me change my view of Emperor Maurice. Originally, I thought of him just as this stubborn and arrogant ruler who just wanted to restore the Empire's glory at all costs, which is still true here. So I will definitely be looking forward for a video about the alternate timeline where Emperor Maurice is still alive and have heard of the rise of Islam in Arabia. This would make a great show similar to Game of Thrones: First you show Maurice struggling to save the empire both from problems within and without while making plans to further stabilize the Empire (perhaps he had a good reason to keep the army over the Danube such as lack of supplies in the Balkans) but just when he’s at the tipping point his final mistake in not paying the ransom (perhaps hoping for an offensive attack) would cause the coup of Phocas and the next few horrible actions to take place. Then show the Heraclii in Africa learning about these events along with the Persians and the Avars who would jump on the opportunity to invade or revolt. Show Heraclius restore the Empire just before the first Arab invasions.

The interesting part is that Maurice was among the Roman Emperors who emerged victorious from the wars against the Persians, limiting the tribute the Byzantine Empire had been paid to the Sassanian Empire and integrating eastern lands that were predominantly Armenian to the Byzantine Empire. He was truly the "Trajan" of his era. It is too bad that his poor decisions that were reflected on the army and the citizenry (including the taxation policies and the situation of the army in the Danube frontier during winter) turned against him in the long run. His death was a domino-effect for the loss of the Empire's former provinces in the north and the east.

After all, it was more of a buffer zone to contain the Visigoths than a full fledged province like Italy or Africa.

After Liuvigild & Reccared, who else made the Visigoths powerful? As soon as Reccared died, he son was deposed & mutilated. His other son went into obscurity until taking the throne in 621. Once Reccared died in December 601, 6 different Gothic Kings ruled in the span of 20 years. That signals destabilization. Those 6 Kings did attack Spania but they had very limited success until the last one, Reccared's other son Swintila finally ended Roman rule as it was under him that the Goths finally united once again. So if Maurice did live & his son Theodosius succeeded him, I'm certain that they would've expanded the realm (not fully conquer it, that's impossible)

I would actually say Western Rome only fell after the Lombards conquered the rest of Italy. The Ostrogothic Kingdom maintained all Roman institutions like the Senate and the old Roman Aristocracy and was a formal subject of the Emperor in Constantinople. The Lombards, on the other hand, dismantled all Roman institutions in Italy and even the people were not recognised as "Romans" anymore, but as "Lombards".

His inability to judge the evil of normaltrash makes it clear that Maurice was a person with a psychological disability. Obviously only a person with a psychological disability would work tiresly to try and build something. Only a person with a psychological disability would dedicate himself to doing good while not being aware of the evil of the normaltrash around him who are waiting for the first opportunity to terrorize any individual who is weaker than them and destroy everything he worked so hard for out of normal wanton evil.

This channel is quite good but, would it be less Byzantine fanatic, it'd be better. Clearly after the abandoning of Italy as capital and center of the Empire, this was not anymore the Empire of Rome or the Empire of the Romans, it was something else, much as if the Brits moved their Royal Palace to Calcutta or France moved the Elysee to Algiers. As for when does Late Antiquity ends and the Middle Ages begin, I'd say that it's also with Diocletian, who almost single-handedly invented the Middle Ages with his destructive reforms, notably destruction of the monetary system and thus the money-based economy (luxury items excluded), invention and enforcement of serfdom (colonatus). What he began, Constantine completed soon afterwards with the adoption of oriental beliefs.

@@poukaa7047 - I don't get it, sorry. How are the Habsburgs even related? Remember that, if what you mean is the last claimant to Roman imperial legitimacy, those were the Ottomans, who did not only survived a bit longer than the Habsburgs (even more as alleged Roman Emperors, because the HRE had been disbanded by Napoleon a century earlier) but even laid siege to Vienna to prove their point.
