I saw just about everybody in the 70's, punks, old farts, new wave, you name it. But nobody and I mean NOBODY, could outplay these boys. The first time I saw them in '79, I just couldn't believe how great they were. Saw them many times afterwards, including their final headlining show at the Lyceum in 1983.What I would give to turn back the clock to one of those nights.

Brilliant, saw them 7/8 times in the London area. So much energy and great tunes, as a teenager, totally connected with their song writing.

Saw them at the Manchester Apollo a few months before this. I just remember non stop pogo-ing from start to finish and being covered in spit. I have a vivid memory of someone spitting a big greenie and it landing on Micky Bradleys Rickenbacker bass fretboard. He looked down at it, grimaced and then dived in because that was the next note he had to play. Next day I was travelling in to Uni, and they were all there on top deck of the bus travelling back into town from the Lansdowne hotel near Owens Park where they’d stayed. Not every day you bump into legends on the top deck of a bus.

My son who went to see The Undertones in their native home town in Derry, Northern Ireland (where I'm from by the way) enjoy it and he's a fan of them. One of the greatest Irish bands along with U2. 🇮🇪 ☘

@@bealfeirste2056 -- nope, my observations are actually quite astute. Both bands were in the same subgenre at the same time, in roughly the same place (the British Isles). One (The Jam) could craft fantastic melodies and hooks, and frequently profound lyrics. The other (The Undertones) could not. That's why since the breakup of The Jam, other bands have been covering their entire repertoire nonstop. The Undertones? Maybe 2 or 3 songs get covered, and frequently tongue-in-cheek.

And BTW, I saw The Undertones in 1980 when they came to San Francisco. They were pretty good, live. But the music itself wasn't special. Perhaps it's special to listeners in N. Ireland, but to the rest of the world...not so much.

Or has that changed recently? The Undertones (proper) released recordings between 1977 and '83; and The Jam, 1977 to '82. They were played on the same radio stations, they played the same sorts of gigs, they shared some fans, and were both championed by John Peel. Both mixed power-pop with punk, "new wave" and soul influences. Both had affinities with The Clash. As you know, you're welcome to disagree. Opinions are like assholes: everyone's got one. But I don't think one can reasonably dispute the many commonalities the two bands shared.
