Here’s how brutal critical works for Borky. Okay we’ll use a great axe, so when Borky rolls a crit, he’ll get an extra 1d12 from being an orc, now if Borky is level 9 and rolls a crit, he’ll get an extra 2d12, and if he’s level 13 he’ll get an extra 3d12, leaving him with 4d12 on every crit. Now how this works with a multiple dice weapon, like a great sword, is Orc extra d6, level 9 it’s 2d6, and level 13 it’s 3d6, leaving him with 5d6. But since Borky is technically a half orc, by pure stats and abilities alone, the thing he uses is called savage attacks, so basically Borky hits like a mother ducking truck.

Nnnnot sure how I feel about the stat shake up... Yall do what you feel you need to, but sometimes one PC comes out better than another. Punishing a player who rolled well by cutting their stats/hp because the others aren't doing as well isn't really fair to them. Far better to set up encounters that have an enemy or two for the stronger character to have to handle, with slightly lesser enemies that would make it unwinnable if the stronger were solo, but a proper challenge when they're all together. Edit: But, that's just how I would handle it. This still works, especially if it makes things more manageable for Monty, who is fantastic.

Hey, I dont watch The Unexpectables to criticize another DM's homebrew and decisions. D&D changes flavors for each group of players and their DM. For some, putting the players through a scary dungeon run where death is around any corner is fun (not my cuppa tea). Or its about stats and deep diving into mechanics and strategy (also not my cuppa tea). For others like me, it's about a good story and character interaction where dice determines risk/reward and differences in stats btw players cause things to drag in the narrative and needs to be adjusted. You guys do whats best for your game. Great session!

(Thoughts before listening to episode.) So I have not seen the changes made to the characters(will have to investigate a bit), but when you change characters stats and feats, you are creating confusion because the players have to relearn their characters. When you go from a roll to an average hp, it sort of punishes the guys who got high rolls(borky). And lastly, when you change how stats go, say you go from rolls to point buy, you hurt characters classes ability to work in combat and in social parts of dnd. Again, borky I feel might have been hit the hardest by all this(so con, str, and Dex being potentially affected. And no offense to Monty, but stress in game is just going to happen, because you want to offer the best experience to your players, and that can be rough. Just a helpful tip, just run back through your players turns by asking if they used their action, bonus, and movement.

For clarity: they previously stated Haste onlt gives a singular attack action. So borky only gets 3 unless he is frenzying which is then 4. And Remmy was hasted not grul so Grul had no reason to get more attacks. Panic gave him mantle of inspiration though.

@@nightdrivenen7909 Here's how haste works it gives you another action which you can use to take the attack action if you take the attack action extra attack allows you to make another attack so a level 5 barbarian that is hasted can make for attacks, so a hasted frenzied borkey should be able to do this: borkey uses his action to attack extra attack because he took the attack action allows him to make a second attack, haste gives borkey another action which he can use to take the attack, dash, or disengage action using the attack action causes extra attack to come into effect allowing him to make a 4th attack and finally frenzied rage allows him to make an attack as a bonus action so a hasted frenzied borkey can make 5 attacks, it's the reason why haste is so good for fighters because a level 20 hasted fighter using action surge can make 12 attacks

"Wizards are Utility" is a weird statement for me, as Wizards with their Schools of Magic are the most suited to become specialists but can deal more damage and such.... with a single spell. Warlocks are endurance caster, they are lackluster in a lot of ways but at least have plenty of features, like regaining spell slots on a short rest, that make them pretty good at skirmishes with breaks in between. Sorcerer are the ultimate Utility, as they have access to almost all of the good buff and debuff spells. But their ability to deal sustained spell damage and have the flat overpowered "Celestial" origin, makes them the strongest spell caster.

Warlocks are also one of the only full casters with light armor proficiency, the other being cleric, and get a hell of a lot more through Eldritch invocations. The reason they call Eldritch blast the strongest cantrip in the game is it's balls to the walls range, and it's absolutely disgusting damage since it progresses with the same damage die and at the same level as fire bolt, and knockback. Even when other casters take it, it doesn't live up to its full potential because all the above features are Eldritch invocations and there are plenty more. The ability to get mage armor for free without expending a spell slot. Free darkvision for halflings, humans ,dragonborn,etc. Being able to read all written languages. To add to that, they have the same amount of spell slots as sorcs at lv20 and that's not counting mystuc arcanum which gives them the spells that go past 5th level. You know, the ones sorcs get once a day anyway. Due to that they technically have more spells than sorcs. Top that off with a d8 hit die over a d6, and warlocks all of a sudden become a hell of a lot better than just an endurance caster with uses during light skirmishes. You are right to say that they aren't utility, they're just spellslingers. Wizards are utility because they know more spells than anyone else. While the wizard schools are supposed to make a player specialize, they would be a fool to not carry a wide variety of spells for different situations. What you seemed to have missed in your analysis was that wizards only have a cantrips known limit, not one for spells. They can copy any wiz spell into their spellbook, and prepare any of their known spells at the beginning of the day. While a necromancer wizard definitely specializes in necromancy, he can carry all the good buff and debuff spells. A sorc doesn't have that same flexibility. They can only change what they know every level up. Some schools even put focus on only one or two spells, so the rest of your spell loadout is fair game. Sorcs don't have the same flexibility. Their buffs and debuffs are almost if not all spells a wizard can learn, and if it turns out that haste doesn't synergize with a party(not likely, I know, but rules as written spellcasting isn't an attack so in a mostly caster party it sucks) well, tough luck, that's what you have until your next level up. No matter how broken celestial origin is anyway, let's be honest, there are going to be some dms that don't want a player to technically be a demigod, and as evidenced by the sorcs that's IN THE PARTY YOU ARE CURRENTLY WATCHING, not everyone's going to take it

Great episode.I can't help but feel a bit iffy about the "patch". I am not some hardcore RAW D&D purist, but adjusting stats on the fly because the characters might be unequal and the combat unfair is no-no in my book. D&D combat isn't suppose to be fair at all times, it comes down to how the players approach it and inevitably, the roll of the d20. It is a fact that certain classes(Notably spellcasters, who can at later levels bend reality over a white picket fence) will outshine others, but that can be influenced in other more organic ways, rather than rewriting all the things listed in the video.

I hate to bring it up as an example, because it's not the most representative example of D&D, but in Critical Role, one of the main characters of the second campaign dies relatively early on. The DM pulled no punches and he certainly could have been more leniant. Even in TFS at the table, they switched/retired one of the main PC's because it made sense in his story. The story and the game loose something when there is this implied plot armour thicker than Tubs.

I'm looking for ANY way to play D&D one shots on a monthly basis because my job requires me to be on a boat at least 28 days and i get 14 days off... so anyone tell me a site I can use to meet with D&D people because (Character opinions required) I have been building a character for MONTHS now and i have been dying to get a chance to use him in something. booming blade counts as casting a spell for your action not the attack action, extra attack doesn't work with it. attack action and cast a spell count as 2 separate things as your action

1:31:05 I know monty is the dm, but I would still argue in greckles's favor there I mean he only knew the one left but the spell would've only been half as effective at that point and while they were fighting two dragons, they had both of the tanky classes and both of non spell focused dps classes there to help, the one orc that spell was holding back seemed pretty pointless for the focus it would require for him to keep up, I would say that at that point it was more of a hinderance than a help because it was cutting off half the battlefield they could see keeping them from seeing anyone coming from the clergies camp who mightve happened to be nearby Edit: more to the point on the one other orc not being an issue by then there was actually only one dragon left

It made NO sense given the situation on top of denying a character the right to use a spell/ability given the situation, or in this case turning one off. The idea was the temporarily keep 2 enemies at bay. 1 of those enemies escaped. No reason to waste the concentration to keep 1 weak enemy concealed.

Kiel Weiss i'm glad i'm not totally alone on the thought, although its not a major offense in my opinion considering an argument would have slowed down the fight, which to me felt a little slow and very one sided considering panic was the only one to sustain serious damage Idk maybe monty was just trying to keep it interesting because it was going so well or something but thats just how the dice roll sometimes Sometimes you wipe a couple dragons and a bunch of adds with no issue and sometimes your party of four gets killed by 3 skeletons and a magic cat
