I'm 69. When I was a kid, I met one of them. I think he was 105 or more. He told me he was a drummer boy in the Civil War at a very young age.

John Clem was 9 when he enlisted as a drummer boy in the union army. He was promoted to Sergeant at age thirteen for bravery at Chicamagua. Youngest soldier of the civil war.

Civil War surgeon Dr. Max Rossvally described a double amputation he performed on a wounded drummer boy after the battle of Gettysburg. His book was made into a movie "The Drummer Boy" in 2017. Dr. Rossvally's book can be read online here: www.middletownbiblechurch.org/helpseek/coulson.pdf

William H. Horsfall of Newport, Kentucky, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions on May 21, 1862 at age 15 serving as a drummer in the 1st Kentucky Infantry. His CMOH citation reads simply, "Saved the life of a wounded officer lying between the lines." He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate, Kentucky.

As well there were hundreds of girls and women soldiers . Only those giving birth were discovered. 2 gave the final measure of devotion alongside the men. Women were promoted and pensioned with pay.
