In the early 20th century, the people of the Dutch East Indies were surprised by the emergence of a unique figure, John C. Potter, a sugar factory machinist in Umbul, Probolinggo. He became the first person in the region to own a motorcycle. As a British citizen, Potter ordered the motorcycle directly from the Hildebrand und Wolfmuller factory in Munich, Germany, which at the time was a leading motorcycle manufacturer.
