Pretty rare for them to last that long. Usually need a massive supply of lava and frequent eruptions to make long lasting islands.

It's great that it's so easy to acquire data like this so readily. It may seem like many of these phenomena are common, but before extensive data collected by satellites and assessed by cheap, powerful computers were so readily available almost nothing was known about this other than rare spotting of some vague aspect that would have been impossible to acquire rough data from at any reasonable cost. It's really just a few decades that made it common to get so much accurate info for really feasible cost.

Very interesting information, as always. You have encouraged my fascination with volcanoes and the devastating impact they have, not just in geological terms, but in the way in which past large eruptions had political and cultural implications around the globe. I'm wondering if the information you presented today may explain some of the Bermuda Triangle mystery.

Could you research and do a video on 1607 Bristol Channel Tsunami in England. There's a program on about it on Channel 5 9pm UK time. It was a widely considered a storm surge but more professionals are now leaning towards the possibility it was a Tsunami. Yet there’s no evidence of an eruption or earthquake recorded that year unless something was missed and wasn’t recorded. An underwater landslide doesn’t hold much ground either. Thought it would be an interesting video.
@davidcranstone90442 күн бұрын
In fact it was first thought to have been a tsunami, then opinion leant towards a storm surge, now perhaps leaning back towards tsunami though from the Channel 5 programme clearly opinion is divided. My one reservation a GH video is whether it could add much to the Channel 5 programme.
@Levine932 күн бұрын
@ I was hoping for more insight and outlooks into the geological aspects and an investigation as opposed to just a historical recounting of the events from that documentary although one professor conned the term meteo-tsunami which I hadn’t heard of before. But maybe Geology-Hub could cross-reference some accounts elsewhere in the sane time frame to see a if there are records of a tsunami affecting the west coast of Europe that time. That would point towards an earthquake or an eruption. My first initial assumption was that it could have possibly been an eruption or landslide at one of the islands in the Azores that went unnoticed and unrecorded.

Zero "official" hazard rating at Ahyi yet as you mention there's at least a potential buoyancy loss risk from gas releases? Maybe "officials" should be more risk averse so crews on ships could at least be aware.

So for practical purposes, the water is as dense as the rock the lava would be trying to flow through, and keeps the gas in the rock via pressure, so all it can really do is burble lava? Can it caldera at depth?
@brianreddeman9513 күн бұрын
How would you detect pumice floating on the ocean? I'm guessing they are cohesive patches of gravel sized material that either sink after losing buoyancy or or get dispersed by waves?
@kennethloki70113 күн бұрын
It floats and looks like a big tannish brown patch on the surface. Tends to stick together until it washes up on shore somewhere or breaks up into smaller patches due to a storm or strong winds.

Pumice rafts can be seen by aircraft and satellite. Often seamount eruptions go unnoticed except for the pumice raft.

Should it not have a score of 1 since even you stated a ship could go over it and sink. So technically not a 0 risk. But maybe the odds are so low it rounded to 0.
