I like the Q&A format! I've seen entropy discussed a lot on YT, and I must say that your presentation is among the best! keep it up!

Thanks a lot! What would you say is the most confusing thing about entropy? The definition itself?

@@dibeos I would say that the hardest thing to get my head wrapped around is the notion that entropy is (most likely) a consequence of probability, and to unerstand that in this case order does not (can not) emmerge randomly. that brings a question though: how is it possible for a low entropy universe to exist in the first place?

@amauryleblanc7979 what you are saying is really interesting because I’ve read about the story of one of the “fathers” of the concept of entropy, Ludwig Boltzmann, who faced a lot of skepticism regarding his approach towards entropy, using statistical mechanics, exactly because of what you say. Other physicists could not accept that order is created out of the tendency to disorder. I mean, it really looks confusing, but it is actually not if you interpret ‘disorder’ as a high number of states occupied in a closed physical system. The more random things allowed to happen, the more likely that a “great coincidence” will take place. Just like throwing a dice until you get ten 6s in a row. Very unlikely, but the more you try the more likely this “great coincidence” will take place.

@@dibeos I guess it's a fair point: the theories around entropy says that a system can only get more entropic (disorderly) as time goes on, (one could even say that time only have meaning because of entropy), and yet we see beyond any doubt that at least locally, entropy can lower. that lead to 2 possible ideas: either our universe is a part of a bigger whole that has decayed to what we can perceive, or it is in fact possible for entropy to spontaneously decrease in a large (universal) scale. It is a fascinating subject, made difficult by the fact it is such a fundamental aspect of our universe it's difficult to enven question... at least for me, who dosen't have much knowledge in maths ;)

That's awesome! Thanks for this and the other comment. Math and Physics are extremely interesting! I hope you will like the next video that we will publish probably on Thursday about the ongoing discussion in the scientific community about whether we should or should not change the scientific method.

This isn't Shaun Carrol tho, that was Schrödinger who said it first. Antonie Lavoisier might have hinted this even earlier: "....this analogy between combustion and respiration...This fire stolen from heaven, this torch of Prometheus, does not only represent an ingenious and poetic idea, it is a faithful picture of the operations of nature"
