Just a few corrections. "Ayla" or Ælla was king of Northumberland, not England, a small kingdom in the north of the modern kingdom. He was also most likely NOT executed via blood eagle, but killed in the Battle of York in 867, at the hands of Ragnar's son's army. This is stated in the Anglo-Saxon accounts of the war, and modern historians no longer believe the blood eagle was even a real execution method, rather being the result of Scandinavian poets misunderstanding historical depictions of men lying dead on the battlefield (with their backs torn open by carrion birds) as the aforementioned mythical execution method.

@@Starr_Apathy Except for the fact that I never claimed he didn't point out the fact that this is sourced from sagas. Instead, I pointed out that despite acknowledging this, he both directly got the kingdom ruled by Ælla wrong, and stated his fate by blood eagle without mentioning either specific context, or the fact that even within the context of using sagas as sources, the blood eagle is most likely not true. Acknowledging the sagas' possible unreliability doesn't garner much when he literally cites the most sensationalist, and incorrect, interpretations of those sagas to present in his video, effectively as fact until the very last few minutes of the video. Both decisions being clearly intentional efforts to further the clickability of the video (including using the false claim of Ælla being the king of England in the title).

Many of the greatest generals such as Alexander, Marius (and his "mules"), Caesar, Napoleon and Shaka were famous for their lightning fast marches of surprise. This allowed them to place enemy forces at a disadvantage while they were unready for battle; while not in formation, while still waiting for the rest of the army to catch up or attacking from a surprising direction. The long straight lines of the old roman roads were first used for military speed. The Vikings like the mongols, Huns and American Indian plains horse cultures were known for fast hit and run tactics. Some of these cultures success grew their numbers and technology and warranted battles of occupation with siege engines. China was taken over by a nomadic horse culture that had made such transformations under Kublai Khan. The Yuan dynasty was a kinda golden age and renewal for China.

@spaceman959910 ай бұрын
Great video - well written and paced I very much liked the ending; I would argue it was exactly when the producers of Vikings leaned into the saga like nature of the stories that they reached their peak - for example, at the endings of Ragner himself, Björn and Lagertha (the latter a masterclass in a story arc), as well as the fever dream of Floki in Iceland. But in the final moments, the series strips it all back to the simple basis for all myths - humans living a life, and having a the rare luxury to reflect upon it outside mead hall or battle... Incidentally, in the blood eagle, the ribs were not so much ripped out, as cut from the spine - causing the 'wings' of the eagle as they were pulled outwards. Vile, and possibly apocryphal only, torturous death.
