If the cover says "Not for children", then that's that. There's no ground for any "family" groups to say anything, because it's for adults and adults can watch whatever they want. It's rare, especially now, since most modern hentai anime's priorities are pretty squarely on characters banging in all ways imaginable, but if you look into some 80s and 90s OVAs, some hentai and not, you'll find some similar stuff. Or at the very least, you'll find hentai that have a lot more going on narratively, and feel more like anime with explicit sex scenes and nudity than porn that happens to be animated.

I still have my copy of Dominion, but passed on Minna. I dont know if it played on the Closed circuit TV loop anime con had going...I recorded much of it on VHS EP, but didnt see Minna. The anime scene, though those guys won't admit it, was a college thing at the time, cliquey and they were pretty unfriendly to people that were outside of the college orbit in my experience, honestly avoided cons for years after the very first ones over it. I found many of the new industry people to be great though. Tapes were hard to get unless you knew someone, lived in LA/SF, or had access to japanese video rental...which was my route. I also attended the shrine conventions, which were the others you refer to, including the first subs of Dangaio and Gunbuster from US Renditions...which were affiliated with Books Nippon....never heard of a raid or any illicit thing. The shrines doubled as selling old back issues of old porn, among other novelties. I'm impressed with your rate of production on quality video essays on both a writing and editing level. I very much enjoy your storytelling/structuring as well as your prose, and your videos are consistently audio/visually engaging with smooth pacing. This kind of anthropologic research and documentation of anime - and all things weird, transgressive and nerdy, for that matter - is important and fascinating, despite it's obscurity, and I, as well as other weirdo nerds, appreciate your dedication and passion to the cause. I look forward to your future work!

You know, I kinda miss the old OVA style of anime. A big part on watching a new anime for me is how it’s art style is different from others. One of the primary reasons I was so hyped with JoJo’s, even at part 1! The OVA style of yee ol’ days is just such a breath of fresh air, and I want to see it more often!

When of the things I have always a bit surprise about is how rare it seemed that anime and manga had run ins with groups like focus on the family. I started watching back when Dragon Ball was big thing and was on every afternoon, my brother had us stop at a Barns and Nobles because he wanted to check out their comics (I was never a comic book fan they sort of miss me) and that's when I saw what was Dark Horse's reprint of Akira. It looked so cool and i wanted it so much that I grabbed the second volume (the didn't have the first one) that day. Later I got the first volume for Christmas along with the movie and bought the rest of the series as it came out. I grabbed the last volume with joy at the Boarders that opened in my town around the same time, it was the same store were I bought my first adult manga Dance Till Tomorrow. I'm still a sucker for the some what older stuff like the latter works of Osamu Tezuka such Insect Collection and Ode to Kirihito and Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura which I got hook to when I saw Beautiful Dreamer as free on demand movie. This is a long wind way of saying I would love to see Shameless School come over here, Cutie Honey was release just a couple of years ago and so was Devil Man which both are some what requisé so it makes to sense.

This is such a cool video, the Wild West early days of anime are a really interesting era where fans ended up getting good jobs with distribution companies and other media simply because they had started out of passion and there was just little enough oversight for the money people to say “ah fuck it you want to do this for a paycheck now” Interesting post-script: whenever I hear about the LA Times in the late-80s and early 90s I always think of how integral some of their reporters were for the highly sensationalized McMartin Preschool trial. The LA Times was one of the media outlets that actively worked with prosecutors and concerned parent groups to demonize people who would later be found innocent in a court of law, whose reputations never recovered due to the severe and graphic nature of the accusations. It got to the point where one of their regular columnists won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism on the back of the articles he wrote chastising the media and in particular his paper for their response and inflation of clearly false accusations. I went back to the original article you posted and googled the author’s name to see if they had any connection to that reporting and discovered that Chuck Phillips apparently did not write about McMartin. In 1991 he was a freelancer for the paper; they would later hire him in 1995 and he too would win a Pulitzer Prize, this one in 1999 for beat reporting he did on pervasive sexual assault in the music industry. He *also* gained notoriety later for his writing on the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious BIG, which was part of his beat as they happened. In 2008 he claimed to have found new evidence of who actually killed Tupac. The LA Times published his reporting about this new theory, which was retracted a month later when it turned out that his source forged fake FBI documents. Phillips stood by his reporting despite this, which led to him leaving the LA Times later that year. All in all a very eventful career: the highest of highs, the lowest of lows, and in the middle accidentally fucking up an anime tape release because his reporting led to Focus on the Family getting involved.

Japanese culture has been way ahead of Western culture for a long time
@augustuzmoon38143 жыл бұрын
@@otakumangastudios3617 Eh depends on what you like and what you dislike Japan and the west aren't to different one being not effected by people wanting there to be a pregnant disable woman who's also an unknown ethnicity for "diversity" there both suffering from problem especially Japan with it's high suicide rates and toxic work culture and america with it's capitalistic culture
@otakumangastudios36173 жыл бұрын
@@augustuzmoon3814 I don't see a problem in not adding someone of random non-popular ethnicity or making them disabled or whatever. I think honestly we have something to learn from japan, because if you talk to actual Japanese people, you will see how clueless most are about bringing attention to race, and most really don't see it as a huge aspect of someone's character as a human being. Now if you mentioned the possibility of spreading awareness that people like that exist and all of that the person might become supportive, but if you just say there should be more racial diversity and not so many white people you are definitely going to get a confused reaction. To me there's nothing more politically correct than not giving a fuck about race and just creating characters that are even nondescript or are something specific but you are so firm on your own political correctness that you don't constantly look for lack of diversity and wanting to fix it. That's a very American thing, other countries don't do that so much. Also about what you said in terms of the high suicide rate, it really bothers me when people act like it's a Japan problem like please don't believe what the media says, it seems to be making us all forget that there is also high suicide rates in the US right now, and in fact there's been a spike in you th suicide in the past 5 years or so, youth meaning under the age of 12. I don't know about you but that sounds pretty darn frightening, and I think scapegoating or pointing at one country for having that problem is problematic in itself, as it relates to nothing specifically about Japanese culture, it relates to the fact that Japan just so happens to be a developed country with a fast-paced society like every other first world country like you know, america? By the way if one was to argue about the hard-working environments can we take a moment to finally remember that the workforce in America is disgusting and not just that the workforce in Japan as we know it today was actually introduced by the US between the 50s and the '80s? There's a huge surge of it in the 80s especially, so corporate Japan is actually an exact replica of corporate America, and I don't know how people can forget that to this day corporate America is sexist, racist, classist, everything. Yeah sure they might accommodate your pronouns, but you still have to work overtime and live on 2 hours of sleep and coffee and have no life for the sake of your job. If you don't believe me, my father has been living on 5 hours of sleep and that's a lot of sleep for him because prior to that he was living on literally 2 hours of sleep per night, and yes he is a part of the American work force. He's also told me again and again about his frustrations with the company overloading his schedule and just adding more more work to his workload and how he can't handle it and how frustrating it is because he just wants to be able to do his hobbies for once and enjoy life, but he also doesn't want to stop having his job because he gets a reliable salary. How can you say that this isn't an issue in america? Sorry I've just met so many people who will one point be talking about how horrible the situation in the workforce is in America and then talk about how it's an international thing blah blah blah but when Japan is in the scene it's all Japan Japan bad blah blah blah. The truth is though, this is something that every first old country has to deal with, it's not a Japan problem, it's not an American problem, it's a first world problem that needs to be fixed pronto. Sorry kind of went off there, it's just really bothersome to me when people start talking about suicide rates and seem to forget America is going through the exact same thing. The thing is though, the difference is that Japanese culture is proactively trying to do something about it while American slack off complaining about everything. For example you can literally get a prescription from your medical doctor for Forest bathing, AKA slow and leisure hiking. There's actual scientific studies from Japan that proves that improves not just your mental health, but your physical health as trees release certain essential oils into the air that helps strengthen your immune system and other things potentially.

@@otakumangastudios3617 "Japanese people don't care about race." have you even been to Japan? Like Japan has a long history of xenophobia, and if you literally talk to any Japanese person that mixed, you'll find out that Japanese people very much care about race. I'm friend with a Japanese person with Brazilian ancestry and she has talked about not being let into a bar because of the way she looks even though she was borned in and lived in japan all her life.
@otakumangastudios36173 жыл бұрын
@@skulIastica like I said, racism isn't non-existent in japan, it definitely exists, but as a whole, people aren't going around talking about what race people are or being generally disparaging. I'm sorry about whatever happened to your friend, that is for your information a bit more unusual for straight up xenophobia to happen, not that it doesn't, but it's a lot less common than people make it seem it too. I'm not saying your friend is trying to manipulate you, I think they are very genuine in their experience, and again I'm very sorry for what they went through, but it's not everyone, and for the average lay person who might go there, there are several behaviors that might be common amongst Japanese people that others might perceive as xenophobic, for example not wanting to sit next to you on the train. This is actually considered a courtesy in Japanese culture, plus if you're a large american, you likely are going to ooze out of the seat and they really don't want their thighs squished up against yours understandably so, so that's why no one really wants to sit next to you in japan, it's not personal, either they don't want to be physically uncomfortable or make you physically uncomfortable at all. Again I do not doubt that there are people who are xenophobic and act upon it, but as a general rule, people don't think about race nearly as much nor carrying around the same divisive mindsets that Americans do on a daily basis. Like I've said before and I'll say it again, this does not disregard any racism that a Japanese person might present, it can and will happen, and I feel like people either are looking for it, or they're expecting complete perfection and then when somebody does something, they flip out because they expected everyone to be nice little angels, because the stereotypes of Japan is either a really horrible country that is just horrible and backwards, full of suicide blah blah blah, or it's such a wonderful country that no harm can be done and then someone the slightest thing happens people freak out. I also know the thing of rejecting people out of restaurants, while it might seem out of xenophobia, again I don't know about the case of your friend but I know generally speaking, stop out of xenophobia, it's out of an unwillingness to deal with language barriers or potential language barriers with foreigners. Many other travelers have talked about this phenomenon, talking about how if you don't if your japanese, some places, the servers might be a bit intimidated to what you went, because they don't have to deal with any sort of issues of confusion of your order or any other potential language barrier problems. There's a lot of restaurants that are not nearly as prepared for tourists from outside the country as many tourists expect, because in a lot of for example European countries, they are very prepared to deal with all kinds of people and all that. Japan isn't so much, there are definitely places you can go as a foreigner, but there are some places that if you seem like you come from another country and therefore might not have Japanese as your first language, the people who work at that restaurant might get intimidated and so it might come off as xenophobia and that they dislike you because of your race, but it's more that they're afraid because you look different you're probably from another country and might have culture clashes and or language barriers that would make it very hard to communicate your order and your other needs. Again especially Americans are not used to this concept, and with racism constantly being a topic of conversation, it's always assumed it's out of hatred and xenophobia, when it's really just out of lack of preparedness of the potential of customers that don't speak the native language or immediately understand customs

Bought a few to gift to my friends, got the cheap laugh I wanted, and he carelessly threw it into the back of his car... ...which was found weeks later by his then girlfriend. The fight wasn't big, as anyone with a brain could inspect it and see that this was closer to a prop rather than for use, but what I would've given to see him try to explain away his hobby, as well as the suspiciously small size of it... I was at my first Otakon in 2003, and they were really pushing Najica Blitz Tactics. Next to the dealers booth, they had a tricked out white car with the anime's logo all over it and "blitz babes" posing for pictures with the car, who were wearing the underwear that came with the DVD and would flash them to you on request; the logo was on the front and the models were wearing some kind of tiny dance pants under them so you could not see through them. The panties themselves were white and made from the thinnest, cheapest fabric ever devised. If you sneezed next to the person holding them, they would disintegrate. Paper would have been a more structurally sound upgrade. On top of that, if you ever did get around to watching the copy you got, you know the series sucked, and I cannot fathom why they pushed it so hard. For me, Minna Agechau is just a classic comedy manga with some childish adult humors in it, drawn by 24 years old boy. It's so subtle it can make generic Hollywood love story movies at the time look obscure. The author, Hikaru Yuzuki, is still alive and still drawing the same thing over and over and over again. do you know how old is he now? You really have a good taste to put it a center of this story.
