@@gammacompanymark I agree, yes, though there is another aspect. The Covvie leadership is driven by infighting, tribalism, propaganda & a rigid caste structure so their ruling classes were intentionally causing societal stagnation because it keeps the status quo. When the castes were changed it immediately caused a schism that broke the Covenant. It's not that the UNSC was more adaptable, progressive, or successful but that the Covenant itself was unsustainable & was doomed to break itself. Like Rome; it was always doomed to collapse.

I agree with you about 343 being obsessed with the Infinity, they put entirely too many eggs into one basket with that ship, which meant that when it would inevitably get cornered and mobbed to death by smaller ships, the Navy would lose half a fleet's worth of assets. Should've gone with the Grand Admiral Thrawn approach of a larger fleet of small to midsized ships that can more or less be everywhere rather than building a big supership to show how "manly" your faction is. As far as I see it, if your nation keeps building giant super ships, that you KNOW could cripple their navy if they got destroyed, yet they're still claiming it's "the pinnacle of their technological development", you know they're overcompensating for something. Building it big doesn't make it better.

I would love to see something explaining all the differences of the smallcraft the UNSC employs, I have noticed that there seem to be multiple different types or versions of Pelican Drop-Ships, and also it would be really nice to get some clarification of the roles and deployment of Shortswords, Broadswords, and Longswords, similarly there seem to be a large number of different types of gunships. Just thought it would be something to bring up. 😅 Oh yeah! By the way, just posted this half a minute ago and am already editing, but I would love, LOVE, to see a breakdown of the Orion-Class Assault Carrier, from what I know it's designed to support an entire fleet and has the facilities to support itself and escorts for extended periods of time without resuply, what with being able to refine and fabricate spare parts and armaments, and are also equipped with crafts that gather raw resources.

8:50 you say that the autumns remained at earth during the requim campaign, though there are several autumns seen going into slipspace alongside the infinity in halo 4: forward unto dawn. As you can see in the Commissioning trailer for halo 4, some of the escort fleet (notably the Paris class frigates, but likely also autumns) actually arrived at requim, but was most likely destroyed by requims defenses, with the infinity crashing down to the surface, were we see it in the campaign. So the autumns didn't all remain at earth

I do think that the PoA has earned the UNSC being sentimental about it. That ship is the catalyst to Humanity's survival of the war, and- victory, I suppose. If it hadn't been for that ship, and those that crewed her, Humanity would have eventually fallen. (But that does mean the PoA II has some big shoes to fill.)

i mean, its been made quite apparent that during the war coilguns spread across the hull were pretty much irrelevant due to the shields. Whilst yeh, it would make sense for prolonged engagements due to ships post war beginning to be equipped with shields making the requirement of defending itself only long enough to fire its macs off, the mac is still undeniable the main piece of doctrine still in use.

Wait...people are saying the Autumn class isn't a real ship? Seriously? By the time of Halo CE, the original Halcyon design was outdated. IIRC, the Halcyon was a old even before the Human covenant war. So, why on Earth would the UNSC, Post War, start manufacturing an obsolete design already decommissioned from the fleet? They have all sorts of new technologies. It is far more effective and efficient to design a new ship with features of the Halcyon that incorporate all the improvements and upgrades and new tech like true artificial grav. It would be like if the US Navy gave up on the Arleigh Burke class destroyer and began building new Oliver Hazzard Perry class frigates. For those who may be confused, until relatively recently, (80's or 90's I think), the US had designated large destroyer leaders as frigates. Yes, it's counterintuitive. This caused a lot of confusion with the British Navy when we would hold joint exercises because, for the Brits, Destroyers have always been the larger ships. Eventually, the US Navy changed the designations making the smaller ships frigates and the larger ships destroyers. Yes, I know it's weird. No I don't know why the US Admiralty decided to call Destroyer Leaders Frigates. While the Frigates of the 60's developed out of the destroyer leader concept, the actual result was closer in some ways to the relationship between Destroyers and Destroyer Escorts (sloops/corvettes to you Brits). Anyway, the end result was the Arleigh Burke class destroyers replaced the OHP frigates.

The issue with the covenant races and technological development wasn't necessarily being war focused, the irony of it that would help if it wasn't for a different issue which you state, due to their religious fanaticism they refused to adjust the designs of what they believed was the correct means of using the things they discovered. So whilst humanity was altogether less developed, it was much more technologically intuitive and most sciences were for sure ahead of covenant equivalents. The only reason the covenant had better warships was due to the foreunners like you said. the Sangheili or however you spell it would've definitely been a force to be reckoned with by themselves if they were not tied down by the holy laws. I say this because, well, war is a driving factor for scientific and technological development of humanity. Look at the things catapulted forwards decades by ww1 and ww2, the Autumn class is a prime example of this again. Humanity survived, looked at the tech went, "the fuck is this so inefficient" and made it good. War drives development, yeh it doesnt control it, but thats made clear by the Human-Covenant War and such

You know? I'm not sure that the Autumn-class was the best UNSC cruiser. But it has two main points that makes it quite popular. 1) was originated from the Cruiser that led to turn the tide of the war against the Covenant, so it boost morale. 2) it was cheaper than others. From what I saw about the specifica of UNSC cruisers on the Encyclopedia and the other documents, the Marathon-class was the best cruiser around. But of course it was also quite expensive. Something you can afford to produce in mass numbers when your civilization is about to disappear and so money loses it's value. After the war, money was still a thing and it had to be spared so: "Welcome Autumn-class!... That is just an upgraded version of an already obsolete class of light cruisers!"

I don't get how the shields activate "after" an impact on the hull. Maybe there's a small sacrificial 2nd hull or something? Otherwise, I feel like it would have to detect it slightly before impact or maybe the literal nanosecond impact occurs. I guess if the shield truly is "part" of the armor. Normally it's a second layer separate from shields just outside a ships armor, so be interesting if it was a shielded armor. That would be different than like, ablative armor.

Great ship but god damn, those ramparts have such shit firing arcs. The autumn has to have one of the worst AA suits in the entire UNSC. Personally, i would have put those 4 tucked in sentries in dorsal and ventral positions. I don't think there is any proper lore for them, but i always thought they were dual purpose cannons, so putting them where they have the nest possible firing arcs would help the ship greatly.

One of the most ignoring things in Halo when it comes to ships is the crew and compliment numbers. On a ship of the size of those seen in Halo one would expect more personnel. If not more crew than more troops being carried . I mean seriously the Autumn class Heavy Cruisers measure 1,425 meters long by 383 meters wide by 431 meters in height. And yet the compliment is supposed to be 45 Marines and 220 ODSTs. That is far below what they should have on board ships that size. I personally think the writers of these books should spend some time on an Aircraft Carrier or a USMC Assault ship such as the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship. Which usually houses 1,871 Marine troops and 66 officers, 1,004 enlisted crew. That's 2,941 personnel on a ship 843 ft long. The Autumn class heavy cruisers have a crew and complement combined of 1,065 personnel for a ship that is 3,831 ft or 1167.6 meters longer than the USMC Assault ship. See what I'm saying ? The writers for 343 and Bungie don't know anything about how to calculate realistic crew numbers. Which isn't surprising considering they have yet to correct the scaling issue when it comes to the sizes of their ship's. At cannon numbers the Longsword fighter Chief used to escape the original Pilar of Autumn before it blew up destroying the ring. Wouldn't have fit in the hanger bay. And been large enough for anyone above 3ft tall to have flown it. So Halo has a major scaling issue. In terms of both realistic numbers of personnel and the size of the ships.
@thesovietduck2121
@thesovietduck2121 11 ай бұрын
Well the Wasp was an assault ship so I guess it was intended to have a large force inside it. While Autumn class cruisers and other UNSC ships like the Marathon and Stalwart were essentially flying guns that take up 60% of the ship which means less crew but yeah.
@John2r1
@John2r1 11 ай бұрын
@thesovietduck2121 With the size of those hanger bays. They should have a lot more crew and a larger compliment. Not to mention, the UNSCs ships were designed to be capable of carrying enough troops and equipment to attack planets if they got out of line. Your average fleet would include support ships, battleships, or cruisers and carriers. Basically, the UNSC operates each battle group similar to a US Navy Carrier strike group. Sure, the carrier and supply ships carry most of the extra supplies, but the intention was for each ship to be self-sufficient. Especially during and after the Human-Covenant War. The Suppy ships mainly carry equipment and supplies to make parts and vehicles.
@Augment_Failure

I doubt the Autumn class could be considered the "best" cruiser. It is after all, a modernization of an older design. If it could be done to some old Halcyons, then there is no reason a Marathon or Valiant couldn't receive the same or better upgrades and be just as effective as an Autumn class. That "lower hanger" is a result of DIGIC not knowing what they were doing when they made that cutscene, imo. How is it sealed off from vacuum? Shielding over the entrance like Infinity? Man, the scaling of UNSC ships is so broken it hurts.

I wonder how they got around the overheating issue with railguns. The reason the Zumwalt doesn't use railguns today is because of the massive amount of heat generated due to the weapons energy requirements to power it. So after firing the rails and thr barrel would very suddenly heat up and then cool - and what happens to metal when it rapidly heats up then cools down? The metal suddenly expand and then contracts, and doing this repeatedly causes the metal to become brittle and this is what causes the rails to become unusable after about 5-10 rounds or risk destruction of the weapon during operation. I also would like to know why the UNSC went with artillery isn't of missiles when in modern naval warfare, artillery has mostly been made obsolete aside from close in defense thanks to missiles being able to do pretty much anything artillery can do but simpler, quicker more accurately. This is why modern warships don't operation large artillery turrets like the ones that were used during the 1st and 2nd world wars - and ought to still be true centurys later, assuming lazer weapons dont come to prominence by then. (Which is unlikely since the US is already making headway in the lazer weapon department for point defense against incoming air targets like aircraft, drones, and missiles.)

We can't forget about infinity's planned sister ship or was that discontinued or cancelled?
@sevvforshort5597
@sevvforshort5597 Жыл бұрын
Well when you think about it. The infinity like Cortana says in halo 4 was just being constructed and took them like all of the covenant war to finish so some of the systems may not be on par with other ships when you really think about it

Armor plating still plays Essential role in battle configuration. Because a ship needs survival against radiation, micrometeors and small weapons

7:00 You mention 220 ODSTs, but only 216 drop pods being able to be launched simultaneously, and now I'm thinking about the 4 dudes who get left behind in such a drop. Just awkwardly sitting there while everyone else drops.

So their shields should be useless against Lasers?
@gammacompanymark
@gammacompanymark Жыл бұрын
Well that's what the armor is for, but it would be more functional against lasers if there was some kind of curved mirror armor. But the covenant has never really used lasers for anything but point defense, and since they lack ingenuity I guess the UNSC figured it wasn't a big enough threat.

A good idea. Since they all have their uses, it would have to be like a list of useful vehicles. The warthog would defo not be on there lol.

you've done 2 videos on the frigates of the unsc, have you also done that for the destroyers & cruisers?
@gammacompanymark
@gammacompanymark Жыл бұрын
I think each Cruiser would probably need their own videos to be complete videos in a reasonable time frame. I've done one on the Halberd-Class Light Destroyer and I'm currently working on one for the Hillsborough-Class Heavy Destroyer and the Dilligence-Class Light Destroyer. The only other destroyers aren't named and wouldn't really work as full videos, unfortunately.

Those extra hangers in the back r just 343 trying to retcon the ship coz they don't want it to be as big as it was in bungie

I’m sorry, 800 crewers? There’s no way. I build models to scale with each other of ships, and a beast that gigantic versus a modern day aircraft carrier (crews of 3,000 at a fifth the length and a pittance the draft and beam) tells me that behemoth needs at least 20,000 just to keep it running. Maybe it needs 800 officers, but… jeez. (Fyi, this isn’t me bagging on you, I know you only report this, not make it, I just had to rant after hearing those numbers.)
