What feels so messed up about the Cyberpunk universe is that it’s a more intense version of *our world.* All of a sudden I noticed plenty of parallels in crushing dreams and monetizing suffering at the cost of humanity and how insignificant and powerless we are to stop it. That's not the Cyberpunk 2020 / 2077 universe. That's the genre per se. A lot of good scifi (and fantasy) is actually addressing issues in our very own universe and time.
@zandaroos553 Жыл бұрын
@@tillorrly1128exactly, all dystopian fiction is inherently critiques of our own society. Cyberpunk’s roots could probably be traced back to Huxleys Brave New World which itself is a critique of corporate dominance, exploitation of technology for control, cheapening of pleasure, destruction of culture and the environment and eugenics (which has been making a comeback due to advancements in bioengineering) etc. from the 1920’s. The genre of critique liberal capitalist society via a technologically advanced but decaying dystopia is probably as old as the industrial revolution - and I think this is a great thing even as a tepid support of the liberal capitalist model myself as it helps makes the flaws in the system the most public and thus increases awareness in people to demand rectification of failures.

The CP2077 story-lines have been very carefully crafted and i think the input of the RPG creator Mike Pondsmith has been vital to the success of this. The storyline fits the genre so well, and its deep, rich and massively distopian. Night City feels alive, its like the starting sources of the Cyberpunk genre....Neuromancer by William Gibson, Do Android's dream electric sheep by Phillip K Dick and how that work was skillfully transformed into " Blade Runner" by Ridley Scott and Syd Mead (the films art director who sadly passed away in 2019). The place looks shiny and modern from a distance, but close up you can almost smell the trash and tase the pollution......in so many ways it the thing missing those parts that a computer game and VR just cant give us right now is the smell and taste of the city; imagine if BD was real and could give us that nightmare experience! I go as far as saying its probably the best computer game out there now, but the hardwear requirement mean that its expensive to get that full on experience it deserves to be played in.......i just wish I had that a 2k 4090 and not my RX6700 but its what my existing infrastructure could support when i bought it (the PSU needed upgrading which I have now done and ill have to save up now) But that is the only issue, these titles need serious graphics.

A very great delve into a fantastic game. My only complaint is that the video doesn't disclose that there might be spoilers. Luckily, I played the game quite a bit, but it would've been nice to have some warning, for the poor sods who haven't got a clue about the game. It took me a couple tries and for Edgerunners to drop, to fully get on board. It wasn't helped that the game was a hot mess at launch, but the game we have now is honestly what we should've gotten, and very much worth the time nowadays. My only gripe is that I can't suplex people with the Gorilla Arms. Everything else is pretty alright or stellar. What a world they present to us though.. I can see why the game took so much time to come out. So much effort was sunk into making Night City feeling as alive as it does.. And as miserable to live in, as it does. It's a terrible time to live in, but equally as fascinating to study it all in depth. Ironically, the best part of this bleak future seems to lie with the Nomads. The wastes aren't any more hospitable, but you're typically free from most of the bullshit the city would throw at you. You're pretty much free from the shackles the city would place upon you. And they have cool rides and jackets too, so it's easily the best scenario you could find yourself in. Although I'd just want the jacket, myself.

You definitely should have done some research into the DLC and more specifically, the DLC ending. You still have lots of these themes that you mentioned, but the DLC ending gives one extra layer of complexity. Spoiler warning for those who havent played it yet. In that ending, V actually lives. Its the only ending where V is capable of making it out with his/her life. However, it costs V the life they currently have. V is no longer able to take any implants whatsoever and trying to use any will instantly kill em. Now why is this important? Well think back all the way to Dexter Deshawn. Remember what he says at the very beginning of the game? “Would you rather go out young in a blaze of glory, or live long smellin like your own urine?” This conversation hits so hard after playing the DLC because now you finally get it. After everything you FINALLY get the chance to choose what you do with your life. The question is, was it worth it?

At the same time, I had a talk with my husband about what we want to do if we get old, and for example need aid in daily tasks. There's a whole discussion about aided suicide, or stopping the machines from keeping you alive. For me, going blind would be a reason to go. I love to read, to watch nature, to play games. If I can't see the world anymore, if audio is all that's left, I'm not sure I want it. But if there's cybernetics... Optic implants, or a chip allowing me to be in a VR, as I lay down in my hospital bed? I'd take that. Given that I already have artificial lenses in my eyes, why not exchange them with some that can show me AR? And while we're at it: my left knee might needs replacement... (It's a big comment, i didn't made a TLDR so thanks to the readers. Also : Big Spoilers Ahead.) What's funny and it's in the other comment - it's that it's already reality. It all depends on your point of view and it's absolutely the point of the story. For example, the Temperance ending is considered by many as the really only good ending. But it's absolutely false. This is too binary for a game like this. All of the plot revolves about individuality - V as a merc is already seeing horrors and is mostly familiar with these things. In game you can even uncover horrid plots like the Biotechnica Protein Farm with Aldecaldos. (I'll let you look on this one) All of the game will make you go through these things to sap your morale. The real thing that Johnny says throughout the game and that V can't even stomach himself/herself is betraying yourself. Your values and what makes you, you. This is represented by Dexter DeShawn at the beginning of your game : How do you wanna die, as nobody, or as a legend? What mark will you let on this world? That's why the ending got pretty much describing names, let's have a little walk through it : - The Devil (Arasaka). Selling your soul to Arasaka is the worse choice possible. In the end you betray Johnny but most of all, you betray yourself and let Arasaka win, EVEN if Johnny goes with your body. In essence Johnny is already dead, him being here is not even an accurate 100% representation of himself (the Relic Documentation ingame tells it), and him being here and leaving Night City means that essentially Arasaka made him live. So Johnny fought for naught, V too, cause he died either of going past the Black Wall, or of Nanites modifying his DNA and killing him 6 months after. The Devil represents this ending good, because you went againt everything you believed and fought for. - The Star (Aldecaldos). People tend to think it's the best ending, but it's not. As mentioned, V will die either way, Johnny or not, because the Relic transformed his DNA with Nanites. Going with the Aldecaldos just makes you die and erase Johnny, and in the end you flee, you do not die as a legend, but as a loved nobody. It was my first ending, but that's not where the game's morale will play the most. This is why it's "The Star", you die peacefully. A night shining because of the star, but the Sun, hope, is still already set. - Temperance is letting Johnny take V's body. This is for me, the worst ending possible even if it's satisfying for Johnny. Johnny leaves Night City to begin a new life well deserved, yes, but he also lets down his fight and flame, this is why EVERYONE is pissed at you when the ending calls come in All Along the Watchtower. Even if V and Johnny agree on this, this is basically hyper fucked because it means that everyone that sacrificed for Johnny did it for naught, and his fight, and why he fought vanishes along with him. It's why it's Temperance : retaining yourself to live for your friend. Sacrifice. I won't even talk about Phantom Liberty : (spoilers ahead) If you get the Relic removed with Reed treatment, you become a nobody, and even worse, people let you down because you got out of their lives. It's truly a Phantom Liberty - you are free, but you payed with your whole identity. Johnny is gone, but you're too, and you become a face in the faceless mass of people. - The Sun is the best ending. Either going with Rogue or alone in the (Don't Fear) The Reaper ending makes V a legend of the Afterlife. What he craved with Jackie, but he also TKO Arasaka on one swift assault, making Johnny's dream partially true. But it's after that is important ; You becoming the best merc of Night City and being the boss of the Afterlife lends you not only ton of money but also connections and reputation, two things that are heavily needed when you are dying of an unknown sickness. You get the Crystal Palace gig by the Blue Eyed Man, which in what i understand leads you to not only get a cure, but avenge/liberate Johnny (as you hear "Never Fade Away" while going to the Space Station). And if it's not that, well, hope is still on the table even without the Crystal Palace, as heard in the ending on TV's, Biodyne is at the end of the game testing healing procedures with Nanites, something that could potentially cure V as it's the same thing that made him dying in the first place. The Sun ending is hope. It's V continuing what he always did : Fighting. And he's even more than just V after Johnny SIlverhand. Cyberpunk 2077 is a really good RPG because the endings are nuanced enough for you to believe you did the right choice when in reality you absolutely didn't - it's a world that is really binary, with a lot of black everywhere, but the writing do something incredible : Bring you back to the gritty and hard reality, as in life. We tend to see things bigger than they are, may it good or bad, and we get hit in the face when reality decides to slap you. It's even reinforced by the fact that the game is played in 1st person, and not in third like in The Witcher. In The Witcher, Jaskier is actually telling the story to the player. He is the narrator. In Cyberpunk you ARE V, you LIVE the story. As what i said in the start : Cyberpunk is in a sense already true. Big Corporation using "Human Resources" to get to more power over a market and moreover the world, big cities where crime becomes just worse with time, horrible future wars that will make millions participate and die, but also just living is hard - being someone that you like yourself, that people like, having a stable life and just live is already a big feat in this world. Lots, and really i say LOTS, of people are struggling already with how hard it is today. Cyberpunk is just making things at another scale, in bigger, and more obvious.
@ItsHawx Жыл бұрын
Hmmm...This makes me wanna redo the game and go for the sun ending. To your last paragraph: "Lots, and really i say LOTS, of people are struggling already with how hard it is today." I feel like the ending where you end it all, you know the one that uses the word youtube is afraid of, really shows how ones' struggles sadly just get drowned out and may just be brought up during a short flash, in which the wider world may just care about you for a short period of time maybe in the news or something akin to that. Not because you mattered to them but just because it would get them numbers. Just like the shot sound in the ending. I really appreciate the long comment! It always makes my day to see that people like to share their thoughts in such detail
@Kilo_23 Жыл бұрын
Biodyne nanites won't matter as during the procedure with the phantom liberty ending, Reed mentions that using nanobots wasn't an option to heal V as the stage of their disease is too far in effect. Also the phantom liberty ending hints that maybe in fact they could have healed V and kept their cyberware active but deliberitly removed it on the presidents orders, as a sort of "I know what there capable of and there a loose Canon, time to cut there wings" sorta thing, ontop of the two year coma exacerbating the time of the disease being active it be impossible for Vik to know whether it was the disease or the procedure that's doomed V to being non cybernetic. In the Sun ending I think the miracle cure Mr blue eyes is offering is essentially a new body and relic/Ai transfer, in return for the space heist. Lots of hints towards Mr blue eyes and his organisation being rougue Ai inhabiting or ordering people, getting ready for the upcoming war that will inevitably happen when the black wall collapses or goes rogue. Think basiclly all the endings are meant to be bad/bitter sweet in the end, like in real life you can't cheat death no matter how hard you fight, sure extend your time by looking for solutions and maybe get a few days or years more, but in the end we all including V are dying from a disease called time, its just up to us to try and have a say on how we go out.

@@Kilo_23 It's coming from Myers, obviously. The game resolves too much about Corporations to not be her doing - that's why BioDyne solution COULD but i just say COULD be another solution in "The Sun". But that's theory, so, we won't know for sure clearly. The game is meant though to save yourself, not the world, it's the basics of a Cyberpunk world and of the style itself, so i do agree with you on the point that all ends are bittersweet. In "The Sun" ending (which i deem the best), Judy if romanced says something that has got very much sense : "You're always going to have a goal, no matter what, one after another" (don't have the line in English, mb if it's not exactly that) V is "doomed" from the start. Not to not live but to fight for his/her survival. Yes, we get more time. Are we cured though? No. That's why i think that the Sun is the best ending : it's the one where you topple Arasaka which is the best for Johnny, symbolically speaking. But you got resources and mean to have more time for your own self. Seeing that the span of the game is over a few weeks or about two months - we can only imagine what can V accomplish now with even more time. Maybe we'll see in Project Orion :)

We already see corpo T.o.S starting to override national laws. Corpo security was starting to get more ‘rights’ at the same time NCPD was scaling down. We’re already seeing the start of this, and it’ll be worse than Cyberpunk 2077 in real world 2037.

All the endings show it's a "no win scenario" for this character, if you were looking for a "happy ending where you get everything you want" it's not in this game- it reflects a life in flux. So each ending give you something, with the exception of the "Devil" where you betray everything you fight for. In some reflection the Phantom liberty ending gives you the one option that was missing, the question from Dexter Deshawn do you want to be "a dead legend at 30" or "live into old age smelling slightly of urine"...... But you then lose everything, connections you built, your friends and lovers who have moved on ( or who have so much rage that they never want to see you again) ...in some way if there was an option I'd like to see is V just join Misty and just leave the city with her.

I chose Panam to help and Saul died. But she told me they could get me patched up in Arizona. But CDPR didn't finish that ending. They left it and made Phantom Liberty which had nothing to do with the end of the game that they had presented to us. Reminds me of the Far Cry DLC's. Bull shite that has nothing to do with the real story. Far Cry New Dawn should have been the DLC for FC5.
@ItsHawx Жыл бұрын
Well the Phantom Liberty DLC is supposed to be an extra chapter within the cyberpunk story Not supposed to be connected to the ending as it is meant to come before it. The ending with panam is an open end, hinted at to be a false hope so it is kinda already done
@ragingmonk6080 Жыл бұрын
@@ItsHawx "hinted at to be a false hope so it is kinda already done" Really???? Johnnie was going to replace you and live out a life in your body. Alt replaced the Johnnie ingram on the shard with your ingram which should have overwritten Johnnie. You should have been healed at that point. But NOOOOOO, CDPR had to make it so you need to find one more solution. Then they didn't finish it. Now I read that there is a new ending. "Panam was always someone that trust issues, V disappears for 2 years. She was hurt, and like Mitch said it took a long time for Panam to get over it, she just doesn't want to get hurt again. Even if it's not your fault, she spent 2 years hurting, not even a perfectly good reason can heal that time." So they not only didn't finish the ending. They came back and took a fat shite on it.

3:22 I find it weird that in 2.0 and on, they made the trash bins for hiding bodies go from the CHOICE of lethal or non-lethal hiding the body to ONLY lethal, so if you dont want to kill the guy the body will be found by doing rear takedown (made much easier in 2.0), WTF? Why do this? Of course V is a mass murderer but if you only do NCPD missions, its justified in some ways, on the other hand CDPR gives no consequences for Farming enemies, which would be easy for them to do just by making it a police star or 2 for random killing of gang members at any spot that is not an NCPD mission. Oddly enough in earlier versions if you used a Sniper from outside the NCPD mission playground you did get a star. There are so many decisions you make and they all are not black and white, good and bad, there are almost no completely moral decisions you can make as all outcomes are bad for somebody. Death is everywhere and the whole portrayal of a future where the graphitti is "no future" is obvious in its intentions. But....for a combat style game its right up there with thrilling examples of making your avatar completely OP and having frantic smooth gameplay. 3:55 What would you do if you were Yorinobu? He knows his fathers plan is to take over his sons body by developing the Relic tech. Notice in CP PL that they state that the body has to be acceptable to the Relic host, (didn't seem to be a problem with Johnny who was no relation to V however but...why make any sense of reality, its a game). 6:30 CDPR should have given you the choice after doing the dont fear the reaper or other endings to NOT have Alt use soulkiller on you and leave as Johnny would take over Vs body but V's soul would still be intact and eventually V would die with his soul, and Johnny would die and not become a part of the AI that is Alt. BUT.... they didn't give you that option as Johnny tells you Alt already lit you up with Soulkiller and separated the 2 of you. And only then can you give Johnny your body if you choose.

Cyberpunk was cool in the 80s and 90s but in the current day it's just a glorification of the awful society we have in reality today, minus most of the technological advantages.

Well, you can't blame writers of that era to expect how "boringly" dystopian the world be in the year they set their story.
@ItsHawx Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it glorifies any of what we have today. It cranks the awful meter to 11 in the "future" to essentially tell a cautionary tale. Our issues now include issues that didn't exist in the 80s and 90s or weren't as severe back then.
@perhapsyes2493 Жыл бұрын
That's a low sub count for a video as well thought out as this one! Well, you got one more now. My thoughts on the entire Cyberpunk setting is that frankly, we're getting there IRL. And I think many of us feel that happening, even if some of us really don't want to admit it. It's a deep seated despair on a future we have entirely zero control over. We're already living in a world with people so unimaginably rich, that if they were to wish a certain societal issue to be gone, they could make it so. But instead, all they seem to care about is "line go up". Capitalism had some benefits in the past, but in this modern day it's devolving into a cancerous tumor. Take, take, take. Consequences be damned. And ... jeez, that clip of the XBD recording studio. That's harsh man. I popped 'em both so that they wouldn't have to remain alone. Just taking out the son and not the father... that voice actor was doing a great job.

This is my issue with cyberpunk. It depicts a cartoonishly cynical view of human nature that is needlessly hopeless and depressing. In most other rpg settings, there's a sense of hopefulness and optimism that you could take on anything, but one of the basic principles of the cyberpunk genre is that the bad guys always win in the end. Darkness is meant to be juxtaposed with light, but cyberpunk is nothing but darkness.
@ItsHawx Жыл бұрын
Well I mean some settings are meant to be like that. Not all settings HAVE to have the protagonists prevail in the end. To struggle, to wail against the inevitability of your end is the point. A happy end in these settings means living a life that you don't hate. A similar setting (depressing I mean) is warhammer 40k. While it has glimpses of hope and a chance for a better tomorrow these are just that: glimpses. These type of settings revel in the struggle of living. There are settings akin to cyberpunk that portray a more hopeful and enlightened humanity. But they are far from the same
