From my point of view, The seizures might be because of the process of adaptation(Cause of death: process of adaptation) . Meaning that Shiva's death is a must in the timeline, which required Sumithra to die in order for shiva to transfer the soul to Sumithra's body. This is indeed a unexplainable phenomena. I think they both had some subconsciousness switching of body for a few day's before death which will be the reason for her to adapt to Sumithra's body and Shiva's body must have failed to adapt and switch because Shiva's sister in law killed Shiva (Cause of death: Murder) . but still Shiva's experience in the past few days before her body switching is not revealed here.

Similar incidents like this happens occasionally in where i live. except it is the soul of a dead person that possess a living person who has a weak soul temporarily. like this one case which took place 5 years ago for example a young girl who was travelling in 2 wheeler suddenly jumped down from her vehicle her body at first shaking violently then she started swaying back and forth her eyes shut. the people around stood to watch her as she started saying something pointing towards north. she claimed that her body is there abandoned and she wants the people to give her a proper burial. the people got scared and confused and they called a woman (priest?) a woman who could save people from possession who could perform exorism and who the lord himself could deliver his words through her. long story short the woman arrived and after enquiring the possessed body the location of the place where the dead body is they allong with some volunteers went to the location. it turned out to be a forest and the body was exactly where the possessed girl had described. laying on the ground. they buried the dead body and afterwards the woman performed a ritual tellling the spirit to leave the girl's body. the spirit left thanking the people for the burial . as for the girl she was extremely exhausted after the spirit left her body and she couldn't remember anything that happened.

This is not reincarnation. This phenomenon is called "Par-Kaya-Pravesh" in hinduism.
