The special edition of The Untamed makes it more obvious, showing Wei Ying's amused and sly expressions right before he says that to Lan Zhan. Returning to Wei Ying's obliviousness, it's somewhat understandable for several reasons. In the beginning he clearly liked girls, although no one in particular, so he couldn't imagine himself liking another man in that way, plus, Lan Wangji always acted annoyed by him, constantly reprimanded him for something and told that he was boring time and time again. Later when they became closer, Wei Ying actually started to realise that he liked Lan Zhan in that way - remember that he asked Jiang Yanli about liking someone in that way, and he clearly meant Lan Zhan then. But soon after that terrible things started to happen, and Wei Ying didn't have time to reflect on his own or Lan Zhan's feelings anymore. Then, when he turned to "crafty tricks", he thought Lan Zhan detested what he had become. After Wei Ying returned to life, he didn't understand because he still didn't think of himself as worthy of love, plus, he didn't think that someone like Lan Wangji in particular could love someone like him, also, so many things were happening again that he didn't have time to stop and think. So, he subconsciously started to understand something only towards the end of the drama, and I think he really understood and acknowledged the depth of his own feelings only when they parted and he missed Lan Zhan more than he had thought he would. Remember that except his time as the Yiling Patriarch when he had other things on his mind, Wei Ying had never been apart from Lan Zhan for so long.

When I first watched The Untamed, I thought Yibo wasn't portraying Lan Wangji well because he was always scrunching his face while in the novel it describe Wangji as having neutral/expressionless face all the time. Then I realized, almost all the time Yibo (Lan Wangji) scrunching his face is whenever Xiao Zhan (Wei Ying) is *physically close* to Jiang Chen and Nie Huaisang or any other either of the Wen siblings. His face stays neutral (almost soft), during their younger (flashback) days, whenever it's just the two of them.
