There is no institutional untouchability in India that is a fact. The people who are "unofficially untouchables" in India or treated as "untouchables" are not specific to any religious group, rather they are perceived as dirty because of the unhygienic conditions many choose to live in despite multiple government schemes to provide them better and more humane conditions to live in. So the argument that "oh there is untouchability in India" is like saying there is slavery in the West. No there really isn't. People just don't like to intermingle with those who live in unsanitary areas, conditions etc. The same cannot be said however for peoples who are actually treated as untouchables in places such as Japan (Burakamin) or in Europe (Romanis). These groups are still severely discriminated against and have no institutional safeguards unlike here in India. One of India's largest Northern State with a population of more than 200 million elected a so called "untouchable" Chief Minister and India also had an "untouchable" President before the incumbent one. Can any European or Western country claim to have elected a Romani/gypsy President, Prime Minister Or even provincial representative? So dont come to lecture here. Also most of the pathetic conditions of todays scheduled caste groups (who Simon is labelling as untouchables) can mostly be attributed to the Brits. Particularly discriminative legislations such as the "Criminal Tribes Act" which the Brits enacted specifically to sideline many communities from Government aid, jobs as well as encouraged local communities to boycott them on the threat of collective punishment. She told us of how one day, she and her husband came back to his old community. Apparently, he was recognized by the "higher cast neighbours" and they were shocked and offended to see a well dressed Dalit who found success in America but it was also all the more shocking to see him with a white woman. When Cheryl was alone a couple of the higher cast women confronted her, saying things like "do you know that man you married is a Dalit" or "do you know what kind of people they are", and other words to that effect to which Cheryl just laughed at them and said she doesn't get or care about the whole caste system and that to her like most other Americans, he's no different to them as most Americans see a Dalit or brahmin as just another Indian.

I went to brahmin schools and most of my friends were brahmins but never really understood why I was being treated differently by their parents. It’s difficult to wrap your head around as a 5-6 year old kid but I knew something was wrong. I was really good at studies and was always the topper in my class; it could be because I always had this urge to prove myself in the back of my mind. Still I was discriminated in the college by my peers, mostly because of the whole reservation thing. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for reservations because my parents although educated didn’t really have much money. Today I am glad that I am able to take care of my family. The stigma of being a Dalit never really went away when I moved to the US, even here I don’t tell anyone my caste because you never know how people might treat you. I do feel that I am living in fear of being found out but I don’t want to risk anything. 2 years ago I started to worry about my marriage prospects because it is hard to find men who are accepting and are mature enough to understand my side of the story; I had sworn that I will never marry a brahmin. I consider myself very lucky to have found that person who happens to be brahmin.

@dasnutnock640810 күн бұрын
I worked in the UK for a US based company and reported to a manager in North America who was part of the Brahmin caste. While she was perfectly civil and pleasant with me, if somewhat arrogant, she was unforgivably rude and dismissive to many of her US-based Indian colleagues, including a number that were ostensibly her senior. Once I realised *why* she conducted herself in this manner, I was distinctly unimpressed, but it did make me aware that social discrimination was still very much a fact in much of the modern world. Where I could, I always encouraged my colleagues that had been the focus of her unpleasantness to report her behaviour to the HR department, making it clear that prejudice of that kind was not permitted. She was eventually moved on to a different department, then let go.
@Lewis-ec5sn6 күн бұрын
The irony of her behavior is palpable. The jokes write themselves, the Hindu who subscribes to the caste system beliefs seeing herself as better than others comes to the Christian countries to make more money while still projecting arrogance on Indians who live in the West.

@ Mo-or3so yeah the firm had policies that were intended to protect employees from abuse but they don’t spring into action out of nowhere. Complaints have to be registered first, before the procedures can be put into effect, and for whatever reason, the people I talked to were reluctant to complain. So the caste system should be looked at as a form of social distancing. Rather than anything else. But because it wasn't easy to convince people about germs and diseases ... They just coded this behaviour into religious ideology. Brahmins= the Scientist, philosophers, & Psychiatrist & Doctors Kshatriya= Rulers, Soldiers, Farmers, Craftsman, Vaishya= Traders, Bankers, Goldsmith, Shudra= Architects & Builders of Palaces, & Menial Labourers, Dalits = the ones who did scavenging , sanitation, cleaning, handling the diseased & dead, The Indian constitution has job reservation for Dalits, and special economic & educational incentives for all Dalits. The Dalits have their own political party, who have sadly ignored the core issues of education for their supporters How they ended up at the bottom of the ( economic) food chain is anybody's guess, one popular theory was that they are descendants of either prisoners of war, criminals, deviants, etc

Portuguese India - Wikipedia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portuguese_India) between 1860 and 1920, the British incorporated the Indian caste system into their system of governance, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes. **Social unrest during the 1920s led to a change in this policy**. Let me explain the caste system to you. In Ancient India ,there were two societies. One was the caste based society centered around the cities and large towns. The other was the tribal society based in the remote areas like the mountains and forests. The Caste based system was basically a work based system. There was a division of labour and different skilled folks worked together in order to make a society work. Over time, some of the tribals saw the wealth being generated in the caste based societies and decided to move to the cities and towns to look for work opportunities. There they were discriminated against because they are not part of the caste system. Let me give you an example on why there was discrimination in the first place In ancient times, a father would pass on his work skills to his son and that son would pass on those work skills to his son. This was done for generations in order to ensure that the descendants can have a job in order to feed their family and to continue the family lineage. But if an unrelated outsider appeared one day in your town or in your part of the city and asked that father to teach him on how to do his work, the father worrying about his son having a competitor in the same field of work in that place, might refuse to teach that outsider. That is what happened when the tribals first appeared in the cities and large towns looking for work. They were refused work that were part of the work based caste system and were forced to do the work that existed outside the caste system that nobody else wanted to do. That was how the dalits came to existence. Another thing to note is that historically both tribals and dalits are not considered Hindus. Historically both the Hindus and Tribals don't worship the same Gods. The Tribals worshiped local forest, river or mountain deities, depending on which area they came from. Once they moved to the cities and large towns, they eventually lost touch with their tribal gods over time and started to worship the gods that the caste hindus were praying to. That marked the key transition from tribal to dalit. But since, the tribals/dalits were still not considered hindus, they were not allowed into temples nor allowed to take part in religious functions in the cities and towns, despite the fact that the dalits were worshiping the same gods as the hindus now. When the British conquered india and decided to do a census in order to understand about the wide variety of people living within the British India. They faced a major problem regarding religious beliefs. They obviously knew about the Christians. They also knew about Islam, since the days of Richard the Lionheart fighting Saladin during the crusades. But they could not fathom the wide varieties of other beliefs found in India. So the British decided to categorize all non Muslim and non Christians faiths aka indigenous belief systems as Hindu. They enacted a series of laws called Hindu laws which were concerned with matters like marriage and inheritance and placed caste hindus, dalits, tribals, buddists, jains and sikhs under these laws. They basically classified all indigenous belief systems as Hindu. That is why dalits and tribals are considered hindus nowdays because the modern indian government follows the British classification but they do classify the sikhs, buddhists and jains separately now.

In India, they kind of created their own version of Theravada Buddhism, as Hinduism and Islam failed to improve their lives. They also don't have a lot of positive things to say about Gandhi, as he chose not to try and promote rights for Dalits, because he thought it would be too difficult.

Caste system itself was invented outside India - a purely European invention called “Sistema de Casta“ practiced by them for centuries. "Casta" is a Spanish word meaning lineage documented since 1417. It is the root of the English word caste. Spanish & Portuguese invented this hierarchical race-based "caste system" rooted in concept of purity of blood called "Limpieza de sangre", to identify anyone with Jewish or Muslim heritage to persecute them during the Christian Inquisition. The OG caste system invented by them was called “Sistema de Casta”. They created an entire genre of disgusting racist Casta paintings to show their racist caste system where they believed the darker your skin, the stupider and more savage you were. Anyone with blood linked to dark skin was classified as a ”stain" by them. Most Indians would be called a “stain” by them because we have the genetic heritage of darker skin than them. Casta paintings depicted the supposed "innate" character & quality of people connected to their birth and skin color. In a painting by José Joaquín Magón, a mestizo (mixed Indian + Spanish) was labelled “humble, meek, and docile” because of darker skin than Whites. Casta paintings such as this by Ignacio Barreda (1777) showed white Spainards at highest social status & dark skinned as more “uncivilized at a lower status.” Entire categories of vile racist discrimination based on skin color were institutionalized by bigoted Europeans in their Casta system. When Portuguese came to India they simply transposed their word “Casta” from Sistema De Casta (caste system) to classify Indian endogamous groups with hereditary occupations. I challenge anyone to find a single Indian text with the word “caste” in it before Portuguese came to India. Moronic Indians who hate their own civilization perpetuated their utterly stupid lies - & the rest is history.

Bravo! This story really hits on some big issues in India. In the North, there’s a lot of bias against darker skin and South Indians, while in the South, caste discrimination is intense and can lead to violence. Sadly, it’s not just a Hindu thing-it cuts across religions like Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism, and changing your religion doesn’t change your caste. Fair skin is seen as better, and lighter-skinned Dalits sometimes manage to hide their caste, but the system is still stacked against them. Crimes against Dalits often go unpunished, and upper castes dominate everything from movies to government jobs. It’s been this way for centuries and doesn’t look like it’s changing anytime soon.

Dalits ( due to their peculiar hereditary jobs) are having a kind of genetic immunity against a host of Diseases and pathogens, which the other classes of Indians are not having... The Dalits have their own political party, who have sadly ignored the core issues of education for their supporters How they ended up at the bottom of the ( economic) food chain is anybody's guess, one (un) popular theory was that they are descendants of either prisoners of war, criminals, deviants, drug-abusers etc

I've watched many videos on KZbin about why India can never be the next China, i.e. improve the life for its people and eradicate extreme poverty for the majority of its population. And after watching this video I understand why. India has many illogical and dumb beliefs, but none more so than this caste system. It's such an antiquated and nonsensical belief, which for some reason has survived for thousands of years and still prevails even today. The Dalits make up 16% of the Indian population, so in essence you are excluding almost 1/5 of your people from the workforce. India has achieved many great feats, like sending a probe to mars and the moon, but until the caste system has been abolished, all that is irrelevant.

@PromodBenjaminJoseph-z5p I think you are either misguided or delusional, lots of documentaries has covered this subject and how it's such a problem in general for Dalits in all part of India. The caste system is just one thing wrong with India, among other issues that seem to be endemic to this country. Such as Indians not having access to toilets, so they're having to resort to open defecation. And don't start me on the threat of rape on women who are warned not to travel alone or at night. I know there are many KZbin channels that document how bad the streets/road of India is and how they are scammed repeatedly, as soon as they leave the airport. I know every country has problems, however India needs to accept they have a problem and address it, and not ignore it and hope no one notices.

@aishikpanja3931 Casta (Spanish: [ˈkasta]) is a term which means "lineage" in Spanish and Portuguese and has historically been used as a racial and social identifier. In the context of the Spanish Empire in the Americas, the term also refers to a 20th-century theoretical framework which postulated that colonial society operated under a hierarchical race-based "caste system". From the outset, colonial Spanish America resulted in widespread intermarriage: unions of Spaniards (españoles), Amerindians (indios), and Africans (negros). Basic mixed-race categories that appeared in official colonial documentation were mestizo, generally offspring of a Spaniard and an Indigenous person; and mulatto, offspring of a Spaniard and an African. A plethora of terms were used for people with mixed Spanish, Amerindian, and African ancestry in 18th-century casta paintings, but they are not known to have been widely used officially or unofficially in the Spanish Empire.

And now, Black Americans are major cultural icons in our society from music, to TV shows, prior president etc. I can’t believe India has let this go on in this modern day and age. There should be an uproar that this still exists. How can anyone think they are better than someone else by shear luck of who your parents are? Baffles me. Look throughout history, as soon as one group feels they are ‘better’ than another group it is always wrong and causes injustice. May eyes and hearts be opened to all reading this.

Shudras however have much greater opportunity to push themselves up in social ladder compared to the other two given that they have money and education. For ex: 300-400 yrs ago my parent's caste was considered Shudra in many parts of East India but now that caste is one of the wealthiest (even wealthier than Brahmins (highest caste)) among Hindus and more educated even compared to Brahmins in states where that caste was considered Shudra and as a result Government now classifies the caste as forward/general caste.
