Wild Habitat - Nature Documentaries

New Zealand's isolated landscapes are home to weird and wonderful wildlife. With unusual animals roaming the lands, from flightless birds, giant bugs and ancient reptiles, but where did these peculiar creatures come from? To understand the origins of the animals today, we travel back through time to Primeval New Zealand; a time when the island was isolated for millions of years after separating from Gondwana. For the first time science is revealing the true story about where our wildlife icons came from, and the reasons for their unique evolution.

Great documentary. Many decades ago I went to Canada from NZ, bypassing Aussie land completely (I've never visited there, tho I'd love to). I was an adolescent back then and so I have many great memories of NZ. And I was terrified of wetas as a kid. Thanks for this wonderful Documentary.

The Kiwi is the Last Relative to the Moa as well
@kaleb3601
@kaleb3601 2 ай бұрын
While they’re both ratites, the closest relative of the moa is thought to be the South American tinamous. And the kiwis closest relative being the Madagascar elephant bird. So neither are actually related to each other. So being said they most likely both were once flying birds that with NZ’s extreme isolation from predators and the outside world in general lead them to both evolve to become birds that could fill the void that mammalian animals left - as did most birds in NZ.

The only time the weta is nightmarish is when it crawls into your jeans at night and you put them on.

i feel like the jokes about the birds originating in Australia is dumb, like yeah, if you go back far enough in the timeline for life they all start meeting in the same spots. that doesn't mean the Kiwi bird is anything Australian.

The most unusual creature in New Zealand has got to be of the the human variety. They call themselves Kiwis after a flightless, nocturnal bird that nobody has ever seen in the wild because it lives in the most remote inaccessible places that you'd have to be insane, or a conservationist, or both, to want to visit.

I have a kiwi in my garden. We live on the fringes of a wildlife corridor. He's a youngish male. Will probably move on though.

@@chazlewis9814 The ancient Vedic texts explain everything about this universe, how it was created, it's layers and the 8,400,000 species in it.. They are a treasure trove of material and spiritual knowledge. Unfortunately, most people, including yourself, don't study them and would rather believe fairy tales. Myabe you're the one that's not too bright..
