I am not black nor am I British. What I see is the British Government let these people work during their best youthful years. Now the Government is trying to avoid paying retirement pensions, NHS costs etc. If these people are deported where will they get their pensions? Why were they not deported during their best years so as to at least built a nest egg where ever they from.

I'm part of the Windrush generation. In the 1950s, my aunt was employed as a nanny in Saint Vincent for an English family called the Cassans, whom I believe were representatives of the British government there. My mother initially worked as their cook in Saint Vincent before joining the Hadley family there in the same capacity. Upon the return of the Cassans to Windsor, England, they brought my aunt along to continue her duties with their children. Later, my mother moved to England, financed by her father. Eventually, my three uncles followed, then me in 1961, and then my three brothers followed me.

The Windrush scandal was deliberately engineered. It wasn't accidental. Theresa May, as Home Secretary, was informed by her senior departmental staff that the INA 2014 will result in Windrush immigrants being unable to prove their status. Furthermore, she did not make it known to the wider public, especially towards Britain's vast immigrant population, that there are such fundamental changes to immigration laws. As far as the public was aware, it was only a tightening of the rules to deter illegal immigration, therefore those who had come here LEGALLY under the BNA 1948 had no reason to believe they are in trouble.

The enslaved people on the island revolted for their freedom and won; and somehow in the western parts of Africa with all its inhabitants back then they were unable to ward of the intruders; I don’t buy that hon. Some parts of history don’t add up for me, but we can agree to disagree. Some tribes in Africa still enslave lower level tribes even as we speak today. So imagine what they did back then. What would they have to loose from capturing and selling their natives to the Europeans, not a he’ll ever lot. Some African ancestors played a role in the slave trade that’s a fact. A fantastic documentary. Thorough research by David Olusoga as ususal. So many lessons for us to learn. Afrikans are useful until they are no longer useful. After that we are disposable- like unwanted polystyrene cups. Afrkans weren't wanted then and aren't wanted now. The health service has been gentrified and it's now SO hard to be a staff nurse or a consultant even though we are today still the backbone of the NHS. Teaching has been gentrified - you practically need a degree to be a teaching assistant now. Graduates from the top universities are being given opportunities to learn to teach and be paid as they learn in the "inner cities". Why is there no scheme to fast track the many Afrikans who live, work and breathe in the cities and could bring their life experiences to bear on their teaching of children from their own communities? Black Lives Matter? What is that? Money matters. Money gives us the options to create the lives we deserve. Reparations are LONG overdue.

they integrated into white communities or moved to the US /Canada. Blacks didnt have much luck or money to do the same and stayed.
@2NeurOldies4 жыл бұрын
It only affected West Indians, mainly Jamaicans. Nothing to do with integration. These people were intograted having grown up here. They did not need papers to come and a lot came as children following their parents. Transport and health authorities actively recruited in the Caribbean to fill labour shortages here. Landing cards recorded all who came from 1948 onwards as they were British subjects. The gvt destroyed those in 2010 resulting in there being no proof that they had a right to be here. In reality most came as children, were schooled here, worked here and were, to all intents and purposes British. The gvt then started a proactive deportation programme and the Windrush generation (named after the ship) found themselves targets of immigration officers, not only being taken to deportation centres, but also denied health care, they lost their jobs, their homes and had no access to benefits. Those deported were sent to a country they hadn't seen since early childhood, regardless of whether they had relatives there or not. The newspapers conveniently reported this with the deportation of criminals, implying that it only happened to criminals. Once the truth of the scandal started unfolding and become common knowledge, it finally made front page news. The majority of people were hard working normal members of society. A huge scandal and another disgrace highlighting the arrogance of Britain.

@@2NeurOldies Very well summerised, Jay. People don't seem to understand that these folk are British subjects, originally Commonwealth citizens, with the right to immigrate, work, and remain in the UK - even after watching a whole documentary explaining the history of the Windrush and British immigration laws from 1948-1971.

This is a bogus documentary. It is very reasonable for a country to discriminate regarding who it allows into its borders. The foreign workers should have be allowed to work but should have been forced to return to their homelands after that work was done. This way Britain would remain British.
