The updated CGI effects of Revelation of the Daleks

I really like the CGI effects in this episode. Nice and inoffensive, they don’t call attention to themselves like in some stories (Day of the Daleks comes to mind), they’re just these little helpful tweaks here and there. The flying Dalek scene is particularly appreciated. I only wish they’d fixed the shot with Orcini’s leg disappearing behind the overlayed Davros who is supposed to be behind him. I know they could have done it, I’ve seen fan edits that fix this mistake, but the official DVD completely skipped over one of the most jarring effects mistakes for some reason.

@@lordferbus2970I think you are correct. I recall that the voices which are disliked here are actually a directorial decision and so were retained

I definitely prefer the new effects, along with the surround sound option. I must say, 'Revelation of the Daleks' was one of those stories I was initially unsure about, but gradually grew on me. The DVD release in 2005 with the CGI effects and surround sound helped with improving my opinion of the adventure, since it looked much more impressive visually. 😎

I love the new effects. I wish they added some effect to the Dalek voices to make them sound more Dalek-like.

Revelations was one of my earlier Dalek TV stories I watched when my dad brought me a boxset for Christmas (Think the tapes were mixed up, it was second hand) and I remember watching this one thinking it was a lot scarier than the others I had seen earlier. I was like eight at the time. But watching it again years later with the updated effects and clearer pictures it's still a great story

I highly recommend watching it again with the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound Mix extra! Some of the actors (Terry Molloy, William Gaunt, etc) Rerecorded some of their dialogue which was a bit muffled in the original. For example, there is a brief scene where Davros tells a Dalek to activate a specimen (followed by "then leave me alone") In the original transmission you can't understand what he says but in the new version, it's very clear!

Do you also know about the DVD of Revelation of the Daleks having a 5.1 Surround mix ? Aside from fixing some sound errors e.g. one scene in the original forgot to add a laser gun SFX but in the 5.1 mix a laser sound is added, they even got some of the actors 20 years later to re-dub some of their lines.

I love these updated effects, but the one thing I don't understand is... WHY DIDN'T THEY FIX ORCINI'S LEG? (1:59) It is possible, I've seen an edit of it on KZbin, and they fixed the other painful shot of the flying Dalek! Why not this one?! It really hurts what is an otherwise awesome moment of Davros hovering, (only time he's flown I think.) Otherwise, I find this batch of effects to be one of those that helps improve the story, maybe not as much as Day of the Daleks, but certainly more than Planet of the Daleks where the updated effects add very little (in my opinion.)

Some of the effects that were redone on classic stories do add something to the rewatching though I’m aware that the purists find the originals somewhat charming and quaint. Each to their own. Day of the Daleks is a perfect example of when it’s done right and had some cash spent on it. Some in other serials seem quite rushed even by todays standards and don’t hold up anymore than the originals did.

The new effects greatly improved the whole look of these episodes, also made it look as if the episodes were made only yesterday. Has anyone else noticed one very slight change to Davros in this story, his microphone is on the opposite side to what it normally is.

another 2 things to mention is When Orsini's leg flies off, the Dalek Gun is pointed downwards compared to the original shot as this casings for some reason had smaller diameter holes for the sockets that was later fixed on the Mk 2 Imperials in ROTD... and also at the fight scene between the 2 factions the renegades are seen moving their domes where is in the original there static... and of course the better voices but I can look passed that as I believe the reason behind them sounding less Daleks was to remind the viewer these were recently Dead people housed within so not pure Kelad... but doesn't excuse the renegades having the same voice... would have been nice to have there voices from resurrection to tie continuity.. as in my opinion by the time it got to remembrance having 4 people doing the voices was nice and they got the voices to a T.. With CGI updates it's often a case of having to turn them on/off in the special features menu (e.g Revelation Of The Daleks) or a second disc that's included (e.g the 2008 version of The Five Doctors (broadcast edition disc & 1995 special CGI edition disc))

I can only watch it with the updated effects for all reasons said in the video, especially for the final battle and that scene where davros is electrocution orcini and Chromo keying for dravros is wonky. It's just sad that the weather stopped them doing the flying dalek battle in the yard with orcini that they intended to do. That would of been awesome. Instead they just blow up a static dalek .

Well Revelation of the Daleks is one of my Most Favourite Dalek Episodes in Doctor Who. Like the 2011 Special Edition of Day of the Daleks, The 2005 Special Edition with the CGI Effects makes the Episode feel like the Revival Series of Doctor Who. (2005-) I really Loved it a Lot! I still have Doctor Who Revelation of the Daleks on DVD, and long ago, I didn't know there was the Special Edition CGI Effects Until I turned it on in the Special Features of the DVD. XD

Both are good in my opinion, though tbh that new model shot confused me even more than the old one did. Where is he flying to? Why does he even need to fly here? Idk.

I will always like the little bit of (unintentional?) canon between this and remembrance. We learn at the end that the two remaining Necros Daleks were to be taken away and reconditioned to obey the Dalek Supreme. Those two exact daleks showed up in Remembrance as the first grey renegades destroyed by the Special Weapons.

As far as I'm aware it's just the props that are the same, in-canon they're different Daleks. Renegades are all about purity so I doubt they'd have Human-based Daleks in their vetenary campaigners. In-canon, the two surviving Necros Daleks end up on Lethe and are destroyed when the Daleks arrive to recover Davros (again)

@dalekbumps Yea, I was never too sure on the absolute details but it's funny those two exact props return as renegades.. I'm sure there is probably a BiG Finish spin off somewhere that details it intricately 🤣 but that's a good point because the purity thing is mentioned in Remembrance too

I wish they had also made improvements to the terrible Dalek voices in this story, even the great Roy Skelton is struggling here.

I wish resurrection of the Daleks got a similar treatment. Hopefully they’ll do it for the blu ray release for season 21, I’d rather a good story like that gets optional vfx rather than Warriors of the deep or the twin dilemma which wouldn’t improve the story

I heard the voices were deliberately less distorted to emphasise the Necros Daleks were made from humans. Why this extended to the grey Daleks, I don’t know.

I prefer the original warts and all. Adding more modern effects look conspicuously out of place with the quality of the video and the practical effects. Besides, while some aspects can be arguably improved, most of the time it feels unnecessary, like the Special Editions of Star Wars, one or two benefits came from some of it, but most of the time it’s distracting.

New improved effects, but to be honest, not my favourite Daleks story. Was to dull lack of action and too much drama. 😴
